Garden Getaways Part II

Thursday, May 28, 7-8:30pm A garden holds a season’s best display of nature’s beauty. If you’ve “traveled” with lecturer Pat Sommerstad before, you’ve seen ten gardens at their spring and summer-flowering best. This time you’ll visit ten new gardens as well as revisiting several of those you’ve seen, now in their autumn and winter beauty. You’ll take home comprehensive information about the 35 public gardens in the immediate New York area, and discover the best nearby restaurants and other attractions. BPA601

Sunday, May 31, 10am-12pm Two trucks will be in our library parking lot to help you with your paper and e-waste recycling needs. Quality Shredding will do on-site shredding of your personal documents. They will take up to three boxes or bags of paper per family, and you can watch as your documents are shred and then recycled. Please do not bring plastic, cardboard or hard drives. KAD Recycling will have a truck to collect your electronics. Data stored on all devices will be destroyed. While most electronics are accepted, like computers, cell phones, printers, TVs, and keyboards, not accepted for recycling are large appliances, microwave ovens, fluorescent bulbs, vacuum cleaners, power tools, paper shredders or lawn mowers. No sign-up necessary.

Library Quilt Group Drone Presentation & Demo

Friday, May 1 from 6-9pm AND Saturday, May 2 from 10am-3pm *Please note: Registration for this class began on March 23, and space is limited. Please call or stop by the library as soon as possible to register* All individuals in NYS born on or after 5/1/96 are now required to hold a NY State Boating Safety Certificate. During this eight hour course, Captain Richard Cloonan will teach you everything you need to know about boating safety. Upon passing the test at the end, participants will receive their NY State Boating Safety Certification. This class is intended for those ages 10 and older, and 14 and older if you wish to operate a jet ski. Fee: $50 payable by check only. BPA625

Monday, May 11, 7-8:30pm Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, have been in the news in recent years as their uses expand. Today they are used for everything from taking aerial photographs to delivering packages. Photographer Andrew LePre will be here to fill you in on the history of drones, the different types, how they operate and more. The presentation will conclude with a live demonstration of Mr. LePre’s own drone, a helicopter with a high definition camera. BPA604

Saturday, July 11, Bus departs from Bayport-Blue Point Library at 8:30am Our trip starts off with a great lunch at the Griswold Inn, one of the oldest inns in New England (since 1776!) before taking a scenic cruise on the Connecticut River where we’ll see fascinating sites including Gillette Castle and the Goodspeed Opera House as well as plenty of wildlife. After lunch you’ll have free time to explore the charming village of Essex. We’ll return home at approximately 8pm. Fee: $94 payable by check only. BPA603

Program registration for Bayport-Blue Point library patrons begins on Tuesday, April 28, at 10am. Registration is required for all programs listed unless otherwise noted. Patrons can register online, by phone, or in person. Patrons who register for programs that require fees have one week to come in and pay for the program before their spot is released. Any fees must be paid for by check. Except for driver safety programs, all checks must be made out to the Library. Program registration for non-residents will begin on Monday, May 4.

This Funny Thing Called Love: A Cole Porter Musical

May 31, 2015 The Standards have been paying tribute to famous American songwriters for ten years.  This program, entitled “This Funny Thing Called Love” (from the song “What Is This Thing Called Love”) pays tribute to the great Cole Porter.  The songs have been placed in such a way as to suggest the interaction of a couple of on-again-offagain lovers.  Performers include Peter Morrison, creator, pianist & tenor, Gregg Sixt, tenor, Kathleen Gubitosi, soprano and Amelia Chiaramonte, mezzo soprano.

Program space is limited and preference is given to children who are Bayport-Blue Point Library district residents. All children must have their own library card and a password to register online. You may come into the library to register or register by phone. Please have your child’s library card available. For families that will be away, registration forms will be available on April 29th. They will be entered on the day of registration after 1:00pm. Caregivers please call to register non-district resident children who will then be placed in programs according to availability. The Children’s Services Department strives to provide fun and educational programs throughout the year which promote literacy and lifelong learning for children and their families. More and more children are signing up for library programs. To help us better serve you, please plan to attend all programs your child is registered for or call in advance if your child is not able to join us. Whenever possible the library will schedule additional programs to alleviate waiting lists. It is our hope that through programming we can share our appreciation of books with the children in our community, inspire them to love books and help them discover the joy of reading. Photos may be taken at our Library programs for publicity purposes. Please let us know if you do not want photos taken of your child. Many different foods and materials are used in our programs. Summer Reading Club Every Hero Has A Story!

Children from 12 months through the 5th grade The public library cares about your children and has planned programs to keep them reading and learning all summer. This summer’s reading club theme, “Every Hero Has a Story!” will celebrate heroes in history, heroes in our community and heroes with superhuman powers. Every child has the potential to become a hero and make a difference in the world. This summer join the summer reading club and discover the super hero inside yourself. TumbleBooks is available on the Children’s web page under “Fun Websites for Kids”.   New Baby Kits are available at the Children’s Reference Desk for any Bayport or Blue Point resident who has had a new baby during the last six months.   Get Well Kits can be picked up at the Children’s Reference Desk to brighten a sick child’s day.

Reading to Dogs

Read to Jay-Zee Have fun reading with Jay-zee our Reading Dog. Jay-zee is a registered therapy and reading dog. Reading to dogs provides children with a non-judgmental and comforting environment to practice their reading skills. Readers 1st through 5th grade can sign up for 20 minute sessions. Children love reading to dogs. Sign up early at the Children’s desk for the spots that are convenient for you.

Summer Solstice Walking Tour – Revised!

Sunday, June 21 *Tour begins at 6:30pm at the Blue Point Avenue dock and concludes at 8:15pm in the Ruth Vanik garden at the Library Once again, local historian Gene Horton will be your guide on this walking tour that celebrates both the longest day of the year and historic sites in Blue Point. This year

the tour’s theme will be “Blue Point Avenue; Yesterday & Today,” and will include historical information on homes never before featured on this tour. Stroll along Blue Point Avenue, stopping along the sidewalk to look at various private houses and historic buildings on the way. The stops will include the former site of the Five Mile Look Hotel, the Megill House, the South Bay House, the Hallett House and much more. Please join us for this local summer tradition! MAY 2015 In the hall gallery are paintings done by the LONG ISLAND COLORISTS in an exhibit arranged by Paul Padovano. Artist and BBP Librarian Deborah Ahern’s sculptures are shown in the west hall case. Honoring Memorial Day World War 1 model airplanes collected by Robert Macaluso are displayed in the east case and Bob Parente’s Military mementos are in the LeCluse case. On the Blue Point Avenue bulletin board is the Children’s Spring Garden exhibit created by BBP Gardner Anne Soper. JUNE 2015 June is here and time to celebrate Blue Point. Gene Horton, our own BBP Historian, will again hold his Summer Solstice lecture-walk, display post cards of long forgotten buildings in the LeCluse case and show his collections of old time Blue Point artifacts in the east and west hall cases. BBP Librarian Gail Silsbe has all the summer activities being offered by the Childrens Department described on the Blue Point Avenue bulletin board.
