Mass Stipend $10.00 The Mission of the Vine & Branches Area Faith Community empowered by the Holy Spirit is to bear fruit that will last as Jesus commanded: by celebrating and proclaiming our Catholic faith as disciples of Jesus using our God-given gifts; by reaching out to and welcoming all people; and by centering our lives on the Eucharist, sacraments, scripture, service and the teaching of the Church.

From the Pastor ~

MERRY CHRISTMAS! The special day of Joy has come. We stand in awe again before our God who is born in time to make Holy all that exists in time throughout the entire universe and our little corner of it on earth. Love, who is God, has revealed its nature to be amazing and “all in” to a most surprising way. You may have heard someone say along the way, “I wouldn’t mind getting a dog if I could just skip the puppy stage”. We all have wanted to skip some of the painful stages of our lives…especially the confused, out of control or dying stages. However, the God whom we believe in, choose the path of revelation within our human nature that does not skip the tough parts. Love has shown itself ready to make the sacrifice that includes suffering and death. We know from scripture that Jesus cried as an adult. Can we not assume that as a child he also cried when he was cold or wet or hungry? His tears were dried by his mother and Joseph and others around him. He made himself vulnerable and dependent for comfort, protection and sustenance on the mere mortals around him. God needed the help of limited human beings. This truly amazes me and shows me that the God of all the universe did not want to remain out there above it all, rather God wanted to be loved so He came as a baby! I suppose God could have skipped the baby stage and shown up as a powerful adult in a flaming chariot if he wanted to. However, he did not. God was born as a baby, born of woman, a woman who first showed him what it was like to be loved in a human body. How good it feels for us to love babies, and in particular, the baby Jesus. Thus we are given another opportunity to deepen our love for God…a God who so honors our humanity that He joins his divinity with our humanity and we shall never again be separate. For nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ, Jesus. (Rom. 8: 35) For now it is our great blessing to realize that we have been visited by a gracious God who came to live in us and with us forever. This is the Goodnews that brings “Joy to the World”.

Father Phil Schotzko

From Sister Shirley: Special thanks to our elementary and Junior High Faith Formation students for their wonderful presentation of the “Stories of the Savior” Christmas Program. God continues to bless me through each one of you. As we welcome 2017 may we continue to share God’s love, peace and joy to all our Area Faith Community and to the Lamberton, Sanborn and Springfield communities. ~Sister Shirley

Our sympathy to the Family & Friends of Orvie Kircher, whose Funeral will be held on Thursday Dec. 29 at 11am at St. Thomas. Visitation from 9-11 at the church. May he rest in peace with our heavenly Father.

“Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’s sake. Amen.” - Robert Louis Stevenson

~Church of St. Joseph~ From Sister Shirley:

January 1st is the 50th World Day of Peace. On the first day of January, Pope Francis will be sending a World Day of Peace message to all foreign ministers around the world. The following is from Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns: “To be true followers of Jesus today also includes embracing his teaching about nonviolence,” Pope Francis said in his message entitled “Nonviolence: A style of politics for peace.” He goes on to say that “the eight beatitudes provide a portrait of the person we could describe as blessed, good and authentic” and also a program and a challenge for political and religious leaders, the heads of international institutions, and business and media executives.” Pope Francis says “that Jesus himself lived in violent times” and “marked out the path of nonviolence” when he taught his disciples to love their enemies and to turn the other cheek. He highlights great peacemakers to demonstrate that nonviolence is more powerful than violence. He names Mahatma Gandhi and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in India, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the U.S. Leymah Gbowee in Liberia, as well as St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Saint Therese of Lisieux. St. Francis pledged “the assistance of the Church in every effort to build peace through active and creative nonviolence.” One way he plans to fulfill this pledge is through the work of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development to open at the Vatican on January 1. If you wish to read Pope Francis complete message for the World Day of Peace please check out the Vatican website. Let us pray and work for peace in our hearts, family, community and throughout the world. Please check your mailboxes for your new church envelopes.

There will not be a prayer service at the Cathedral of St. Paul, prior to the march as there has been in previous years. All activities for the March for Life will take place at the Capital. Here is a great opportunity to encourage people to attend who normally may not have the possibility to do so because of their work commitment.

January Liturgical Ministry Schedules are in the entrances of church.

Advent Reflection “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14) The date: December 1223. The place: Greccio, Italy. The problem: a man living in poverty lamenting that his town’s observance of Christmas had become overshadowed by materialism. Distraught, the man did something extreme. He gathered some friends together, along with some livestock , and re-created the scene at the manger. It was a moving experience for many people, and over the years, the practice spread across the world. The man was St. Francis of Assisi, and the practice-which every parish around the world has since adopted– was the traditional nativity scene. About six hundred years later, a priest in France was so full of joy at the sight of a nativity scene that he found his heart melting. “Who can describe the joy of the feast of Christmas?” he asked. Then , moved by the Holy Spirit, he wrote a homily that described three acts of humility that were at the heart of this great feast. The first act of humility was God’s plan for his Son to take on our human nature and become a man like us in all things but sin. The second act of humility was God’s decision to have his Son born into poverty. That priest was St. John Vianney, known as the Curéof Ars and the patron of all priests. As Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth today, let’s follow the example of these two great saints. Let’s fix our eyes on the baby Jesus and make him the first priority of our day. Let’s carve out some private time with him tin prayer before all the celebrations begin. Maybe you can even gather the family and pray together. And let’s contemplate God’s humility and his magnificent plan for us—a plan that was grounded in what is unquestionably the most dramatic act of humility ever. “O come, let us adore him!” (The Word among us)

Our sympathy to the Family & Friends of Andrew Vogel, whose Funeral was held on Friday Dec. 23. May he rest in peace with our heavenly Father.

St. Raphael School MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Mixed amongst the Christmas program and classroom parties were many other events to keep us busy. We gathered around the Advent Wreath weekly for prayer and reflection. We had our final Advent Prayer last Tuesday and all four candles were lit. Our school choir had the privilege of sharing their music. This past Wednesday, their director, Mrs. Beth Steffl, brought them and the sounds of the season out to St. John’s and shared their love of music with the residents of St. John’s Lutheran Home. Mrs. Sharon Pieschel graciously gave her time and talent to accompany the choir on the piano. The choir had a wonderful time and the residents enjoyed the singing. This past Friday we began Christmas break. It is a time for everyone to regroup after a time of waiting during Advent, celebrating the birth of Jesus, ushering out the old year and ringing in the New Year. We return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2017! Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to Everyone!
