“Bell’ Italia” Venice ~ Florence ~ Assisi ~ Rome

The Master’s Academy and EF Tours invite TMA students enrolled in grades 10-12 (2015-2016 school year) to take part in this educational adventure!

Destination:

Bell’ Italia

January 5-13, 2016* (TBA)

Bell’ Italia - The Best of Italy! It is time to return to the slower pace of Italy and enjoy the beauty that has been evident there for centuries. Students will have the opportunity to embrace the cultures of several different regions in Italy. (Veneto, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio) Thoroughly Italian, yet uniquely different, each region provides exciting cultural experiences. History will come alive as students walk the ancient cobblestones and journey through the changes they experience today in Western Civilization. The canals alone, make Venice a city like no other. Florence, the center of the Renaissance, symbolizes a major turning point in our civilization. The magnificent Duomo and Michelangelo’s David both reside there. The solitude of ancient Assisi is so appealing and will provide time for reflection. When in Rome … The Colosseum reminds us of the ancient Roman Empire and it’s role in shaping our own future. Trevi Fountain beckons our return. TMA students last watched the sun set over the Spanish Steps in 2011 and it is time for a return to this most delightful country. (We will fly into Milan and depart from Rome)

TMA J-Term 2016: Bell’ Italia

(The Best of Italy)

Itinerary ~ An overview After flying overnight to Milan, Italy we will push through jet lag, have brunch in the city, and take the charter bus to Venice, (Veneto Region) the city of canals. After a good night’s sleep, we enjoy our day on the island - where it is impossible to get lost! Students will find great photo opportunities in this historic place! (Piazza San Marco, Doges’ Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica, Venetian glass, and gondolas!) Off to Florence (Tuscany Region’s capial city) where we will step back into the times of the Renaissance. The fifteenth century in Florence had more genius in all forms concentrated in such a small place - more than we would see in a lifetime! Much of it was funded by the Medici family. The Church of Santa Croce, The Duomo and Baptistry, San Lorenzo street market, the Ponte Veccio over the River Arno, and Michelangelo’s “David” at the Accademia are all on the agenda! Onward to the Umbria Region and the ancient city of Assisi. It is known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi, but has, for centuries been a place of solice and reflection for Christian pilgrims. We will enjoy a break in the pace of travel so we can refresh ourselves before we reach Rome!. Basilica of San Franscesco and more. Our trip would not be complete without heading to the Lazio Region and it’s capital city of Rome. So much of what students have learned about Western Civilization began here. Walking the cobblestone streets is memorable in itself but completing our visit by tossing our coins in Trevi Fountain (so we can return one day) and rushing up the Spanish Steps just in time to see the sun set will make our time in Rome the tip of the travel iceberg. We will long to experience more! (Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel) It will be with both joy and tears that we head to the airport while reflecting on the regions and their cultures. They are as interesting and distinct as those in our own America. We will sit back to absorb what we have experienced and incorporate much of it into our daily lives, with the purpose of becoming more mature, wiser, and a better citizen of this world that God has placed us in for such a time as this. The academic focus of the trip centers around journaling, photography, and discussions of world-view as we learn about language, cultures, and borders in these beautiful and historic places.

Financial Details 9 Days $3150 + Gratuities After your $500 deposit, all payments will be billed through your TMA tuition account, beginning in May. (Trip gratuities will be billed in November) *Please note that this trip includes a $500 non-refundable deposit*. Should cancellation occur, we will work with you within the parameters of what can be refunded at the time of cancellation. This varies by month. If you are concerned about the possibility of not, traveling we recommend the purchase of private trip cancellation insurance. (Non-refundable means once you are registered with the tour company, which should be within 2 days after registration is turned in) See General Information and Policies for Cancellation Policy.

Meetings Students enrolled for the trip will meet once a month during scheduled Flex or Lunch periods. During this time we will cover a variety of information, including great travel suggestions that will make the trip more rewarding and memorable. These meetings are mandatory. There will be several parent meetings offered, just to keep you up to date, with a mandatory “Departure meeting” in December.

Continued …

General Information continued…… Checked Baggage and Carry-Ons: Everyone will bring one carry-on which will contain necessities and two changes of clothing. (In the case of lost luggage) You may also have one personal item such as a backpack or purse. Traveling with carry-on only is highly recommended, though you may have one piece of checked luggage depending upon the size of our group. TBA. Airline requirements determine the size of your bags so confirm sizes before purchasing.

Air Conditioning / US Comforts: Remember that foreign A/C systems in public places, hotels, restaurants and on transportation do not meet our typical US standards. Europe is also not governed by ADA regulations and there are times when we will encounter cigarette smoke. Be prepared if you have specific allergies or other challenges.

Hotel Accommodations: You will be provided with information as soon as I have it. (mid December.) The web sites will indicate what is and is not provided for your convenience. At that time room mates can decide who needs to pack what. We are scheduled and priced for quad occupancy though we must be prepared for all kinds of changes. Rest assured that your trip leader will do all that is possible to keep roomies as they were requested, but thank you for understanding that some changes may be beyond my control. There is no such thing as a smoke-free room, but we always ask.

Health: It is our hope that anyone who has a desire to travel, will be able to travel, and we will do all that is reasonably possible to assist. It is worth noting that there are times when what we wish to do is not what we ought to do, especially regarding health and the various challenges that come with European travel during the winter months. For any student with severe allergies or physical challenges of any kind, feel free to talk with your Trip Leader before registering. She can give you a good idea about what is and is not likely to be possible for your student. God’s world is amazing and we do want every student to have the opportunity to travel, so please. allow us to help you.

Trip Duration (not counting pre-trip meetings) Your trip begins with your luggage check in and ticketing at the Orlando airport and ends when your parents meet you at the shuttle exit in the Orlando airport. (Parents will initial your safe return so please don’t forget to sign with the appropriate chaperone!)

Safety Safety is #1 to TMA and the tour company we selected. TMA contracts with tour companies that are experienced, have great records and are professionals in the travel business. The travel company guides are trained in first aid, are very familiar with the culture and the terrain, and can assist with language barriers. EF guides are typically native to the country we visit, or travel with groups often. In the case of political unrest, EF Tours is well equipped to remove students safely. In the case of natural disasters, they have plans in place for evacuation, though most natural disasters are unexpected and can not be planned. Our emergency chain will come from the TMA Development Office.

Emergencies Students will have an ID card with all important information contained on it. This will be placed in their security pouch, inside their clothing. Parents will also have access to the Trip Leader via cell (text)...but please, just for emergencies where you must reach us. I will do my best to encourage students to text home daily, or when we have wifi access. The travel company will communicate with the Trip Leader and School Administration only. In the case of a trip related emergency, you will receive information through the TMA Development/Admissions office.

Traveler’s Pledge Your ability to participate depends entirely upon decisions that you make along the way, so be sure to pay attention to the Traveler’s Pledge and TMA Policies regarding what you do both in, and out of school. The trip time is considered your ‘school day’, though 24/7. To leave the trip early, is possible, though expensive on your part. Be sure to read it! Just a word to to the wise...though I am sure that no one really needs to hear this!

Travel Waiver (EFTours) Each traveler and guardian assumes all risks involved in participation on this trip. The Tour Company, its employees, affiliates, participant schools, officers, directors, or chaperones cannot be held responsible for any injury, loss, damage, accident, delay, or expense resulting from any event beyond its control including but not limited to acts of God, war, terrorism, strikes, violence, sickness, government restrictions and regulations, or any problems caused by the airlines, bus companies, trains, ships, hotels and any other companies or individuals providing services to our groups.

In other words - we are well prepared, never intentionally negligent, and concerned about student safety first and foremost. Other Information EF Tours will communicate with your Group Leader, Judi Tome. Any information that you might need can be accessed by contacting [email protected]. If I do not have the information. I will work to get it for you in a timely manner.

!

Thank you for reading this information, which should serve you well during the planning stages of the trip and for it’s duration.

Your signature on the TMA registration form indicates that you have read and agreed to abide by the guidelines and policies established for overseas travel by EF Tours and The Master’s Academy.

Traveler’s Pledge

Bell’ Italia (Italy) with EF Tours: January 2016

Reminder: Many participants are 18 and ‘legal adults,’ yet each student is traveling as a part of a school group and under the authority and umbrella of the school and its representatives, its rules and regulations. All policies that apply at school, also apply for this trip. Consider ‘Legal ‘ as what is allowed at TMA, not what is allowed in a given country. For the safety of all individuals/group, these guidelines are important and must be followed. Mature young people will not be looking for ‘loop-holes’ or complaining. (This is different from family vacation.) We must watch out for one another at all times. With ‘group think’ in mind and an understanding of these basic rules of conduct, maximum freedom can be permitted on this trip. If you have any particular concerns, please feel free to talk to your trip leader well before December 1, 2015. Please avoid acting on impulse as it puts your group leaders in the situation of having to withdraw privilege. Failure to comply will result in your being in the immediate presence of the assigned chaperone and loss of freedom to be in groups with your friends. In the rare case of a suspension prior to the trip, the TMA Discipline Committee will meet and prayerfully determine the wisdom of allowing the student to participate in this trip. Understand that unless you have purchased specific trip cancellation insurance, you would receive no refund for the trip. What happens before this trip is as important as what happens during the trip! 1.

I understand that while I am traveling I represent my home, The Master’s Academy, EF Tours, Inc. and Jesus Christ. My conduct, words and attitude will always reflect that. I will not voice criticism or negative comments but will remain cheerful and expectant of new adventures even under trying circumstances. I will be respectful to and about all people at all times.

2.

I understand that I am expected to participate in all group activities even if I should feel under the weather. I will be respectful in hotels, restaurants, and other places that we visit, remembering that we do not want to be remembered as ‘loud Americans.’ I will honor requests made by the trip chaperones and be respectful and pleasant for the entire trip. (If I become more than just uncomfortable, I will notify a chaperone immediately)

3.

I understand that during allotted “free time” travelers must be in groups of four or more, in contact with a chaperone, and never go ANYWHERE alone. I will not make new associations, meet up with people I know, go off with anyone, nor will I invite them to join our group, especially in the hotels. (To meet a relative, parents must meet with Mrs. Tome prior to Dec 1, 2015.) I understand that if I have a ‘great idea’ of something to do, which may or may not be on the itinerary, it is a wise and mature decision to discuss this with the Trip Leader, who will evaluate the request and honor it if it seems reasonable and safe. I understand that it is unwise to make impulsive decisions that could result in severe consequences including an early departure for home for myself and others. (At my family’s complete expense.)

4.

I understand that I (as a minor or legal adult) may NOT consume or purchase alcohol, tobacco products, drugs (legal or not) on this trip. I will not find a way to get a tattoo or any type of piercing, nor purchase or receive any item which is against TMA policy. I will hold myself and my roommates accountable regarding the use of the TV and electronic devices, and understand that leaving them off is the best choice of all. If I am aware of such activities, I will notify a chaperone.

5.

I understand that profanity is inappropriate at all times on this trip and that P/PDA’s (Public and/or Private Displays of Affection) should be limited to ‘group hugs’ for photo journaling purposes only. (Should PDS’s be an issue, chaperones reserve the right to separate the participants.

6.

I understand that hotel personnel should not be moving my stuff in order to clean, so I will leave my room tidy each morning and take all valuables with me each time I leave my room. I am responsible for my own key, wallet and passport!

7.

I understand that hotel rooms are private spaces and that males and females (students and adults) are not allowed in rooms of members of the opposite gender (except in the case of a Chaperone-Called group meeting in the case that we do not have a better meeting place.) I understand that there is not a need for students to be in rooms other than their own, period.

8.

I understand that because it will be January, in Europe, attire is not a huge issue BUT all casual attire will be modest. (low cut, skin tight, and clothing that hangs off the body are all inappropriate) Swimming is not an option at our hotels. Follow TMA guidelines regarding what is printed on your clothing. If you can’t figure it out, wear a TMA uniform. Hair, too.

9.

I understand that if I violate my school’s policies and standards or EF Tours’ standards I risk being sent home (at personal expense.) The decision will be made by the conferring of TMA Administration, Trip Chaperones and the EF Tours guide who will act quickly out of respect for the other trip participants.

10.

Regarding my personal ID, tickets and passports, luggage… (1) I will keep up with my personal ID, Tickets, Passports, luggage and other valuables and personal belongings (including any electronic gadgets I choose to bring along.) This includes carrying my own stuff at all times. (2) I will exchange a photocopy of my ID/passport with another traveler and will keep up with the my original Passport*. I understand that I can not return to the USA without it. *A lost passport will keep you from returning to the USA. A chaperone will stay behind with you to remedy the situation but your family will be responsible for ALL expenses for both parties. (3) I understand that if I lose my passport before I depart the USA, I will not be able to continue on the trip, but will have to return home, forfeiting my trip and all costs as this is rarely an insurance reimbursable expense. (4) I understand that if I lose my passport while abroad, I will be responsible for all costs associated with obtaining a new one. This may include passport fees, flight changes, and/or hotel costs for myself and an adult chaperone. (No student will be left alone to handle such a situation) A TMA Chaperone will take care of making the payments. All costs will be due to TMA immediately upon our return.

11.

I will make quiet time with Christ a priority. I will appreciate my peers, thank God for my parents and family, and journal about my experiences and life-changing moments. I will record great photographic memories. I will keep texting to an absolute minimum, texting my parents daily so they can sleep at night. I understand that I expect to have a great academic experience, the time of my life, and that ‘group think’ will help this to happen for everyone! I plan to thank those who assisted me financially so that I could take part in this opportunity. I will travel in such a way that those who follow after me will be offered the same opportunity.

12.

I determine to let my light so shine before men so that they will want to know my Father, who is in Heaven

Your signature on the TMA Registration Form indicates acceptance of this pledge TMA Policy review: Handbook page 15 - regarding breaking the law, on or off campus. *When clear evidence is available, students who supply alcohol or illegal drugs to others (on or off campus) will be expelled and referred to law enforcement. Don’t let spring and summer break mischief and impulsive, poor decision making cost you a great trip!
