ADVANCE PROGRAMME www.valve-world.net

MECC Conference & Exhibition Center, Maastricht, The Netherlands, 4-6 November 2008

Join us at Valve World Dear Valve friends and colleagues, On behalf of the Valve World team, steering committee and advisory group I am very pleased to invite you to join us at the Valve World Conference in Maastricht, The Netherlands. We began preparation for the conference determined to create an event for everyone with an interest in valves and flow control, be they a student or a seasoned professional. We feel that the range of papers we have selected has achieved this objective admirably. The Valve World team, steering committee and advisory group really had its work cut out, as we were tasked with reviewing close on 100 abstract papers. My thanks to all the contributors! Their efforts mean the conference has interesting, informative and varied content. As you can see, the advance programme contains four plenary lectures, 55 parallel presentations and six workshops. The session topics will be standardization, modelling & design, automated valves & safety, materials, maintenance, fugitive emissions, fluid dynamics, reliability, sealing, procurement and castings. With this improved program we now need an audience to make the conference a successful event, so

please do sign up quickly and benefit from the attractive “early bird” rates. You can find more information on the registration form elsewhere in this publication. I am also pleased to reveal a new feature at the year 2008 conference, namely a speakers' corner. This will give attendees greater opportunity to meet with various presenters. I'm also delighted that my friend and colleague Barrie Kirkman will be giving a master-class on end-user procurement practises and techniques. But the conference is not just about the technical content. Equally important is the opportunity to meet with your peers, both end-users and suppliers, active in a whole range of industries. An explicit timeslot has been built into the program for visiting the Expo. I know how important networking is to us all. In fact, I see approaching people, being open and communicating with them as hugely important in both my professional and personal life. Valve World 2008 is an ideal platform to meet people, as it is a very social event. I am sure you will find this conference and exhibition a rewarding blend of technical and social activities, in the

beautiful historic city of Maastricht, The Netherlands. The Valve World team, steering committee, advisory group and I look forward to meeting you at the Sixth Biennial Valve World conference and exhibition, the 4th, 5th and 6th of November 2008.

NEW! Speakers’ Corner “Speakers’ Corner” at Valve World Maastricht is an exciting new venture to share end user experiences directly with expo attendees and exhibitors. Though the Conference has been very well attended in past years not all have the time to participate. Life is too busy. So the idea is let's bring a little of the conference into the expo! Two hourly afternoon sessions will cover aspects of valve procurement, technical issues, and manufacturer and approval techniques. Different subjects will be discussed on each day. If anyone wishes a specific topic be addressed then please contact me and I will do my very best to accommodate it. The format will be in a relaxed atmosphere. Interaction with the listeners will be encouraged and hopefully in the true spirit of “Speakers’ Corner” there will be those who volunteer their

comments and suggestions! So here's to November when I hope to see you in the main expo coffee area on Wednesday (5th) and Thursday (6th) afternoons. Please come and join in.

The Speakers’ Corner is run by Barrie Kirkman. Barrie retired from BP after 33 years service in 2004. During this time he was technical and procurement champion for valves responsible for BP valve strategies, technical specifications, vendor audits, developing approved manufactures and implementing regional and global agreements. Barrie now provides an independent consultancy service to the industry and has worked for Shell, BP, BASF and Ineos. Barrie is familiar with a wide spectrum of suppliers and manufacturing methods. Barrie is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a fellow member of Valve World Magazine. He writes regular articles on various aspects of the industry and still visits many companies around the world.

Credit where credit is due Valve World would like to thank the members of the Steering Committee and Advisory Group, who have selected the paper presentations and compiled the conference programme for this year's Valve World Conference. Thanks to their dedication and commitment to the advancement of valve and flow control technology in particular, the Conference will offer a wide variety of interesting and topical paper presentations. In addition, thanks to their guidance and advice six workshops have been selected, targeted at creating an open atmosphere where delegates can discuss various issues with their peers. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of professionals.

Master Class : piping issues, valve selection philosophy, proper line-up of valves Moderator: Cor Bahnerth Thursday November 6, 2008 at 14:00 As a young maintenance mechanic he started at Shell Refinery Pernis (SNR) in The Netherlands in 1965 and he worked at Pernis for about 8 years. In 1972 he was transferred from Pernis to PetroChemical site of Shell Chemicals at Moerdijk (SNC). In 1972 and early 1973 he was involved in the mechanical completion of the Naphtha steamcracker at that location. From 1974 till 1980 he followed, beside his daily job, a mechanical engineering study. Till 1984 he worked in several positions for the maintenance department at Moerdijk and in the Spring of that year he started to work for the mechanical engineering & maintenance technology department in particular at the Valve and Sealing section. In 1993 he became a job as Quality Co-ordinator in which he was responsible for the ISO 9001-14001 certification of all maintenance departments of SNC. Since December 1994 he is also a certified ISO 9001 Lead Assessor for third party quality assessments (with a follow-up in 2001).

In 1998 till the end of 2007 he worked again as a mechanical engineer for the SNC location Moerdijk as well as SNC Pernis. In that period he adviced also Shell Global Solutions in The Hague concerning technical matters with regard to global valve contracts. In November 2006 he was one of the moderators of the Valve World workshop. In August 2007 he retired from Shell Chemicals in The Netherlands. From January 2008 he works for his own company Bahnerth Valve Consultancy BV as a Consultant for valve and sealing technology, maintenance technology and technical & quality management. He is looking forward to Valve World 2008, in particular to the Valve World workshop. In this workshop he will show the attendees the (undervalued) difference in behaviour between Safety relief valves acting on Gas/Vapour or acting on Liquid, especially if the overhaul or repair is not carried out properly and/or carried out in accordance with the appropriate manufacturer standards. He hopes and expects that attendees of the Valve World 2008 master-class will afterwards understand the differences in overhaul/repair and testing of safety relief valves for gas/vapour service or liquid service.
