• The Bulls have an all-time record of 28-6 in home openers, including a streak of 12 straight wins and a perfect 5-0 record during head coach Cheryl Dozier’s tenure. The Bulls also hosted Canisius in their home and season opener in Dozier’s first year at UB (1998-99), earning an 86-75 win over the Griffs - Dozier’s first career head coaching victory. The last time the Bulls lost a home opener was during the 1990-91 season when they dropped an 81-76 decision to Slippery Rock in the UB Tipoff Tournament. • The Bulls were picked to finish fourth in the East and ninth overall in the MAC’s Preseason Poll, as selected by the MAC News Media Association. The Bulls also received four first-place votes in the East Division. • Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier enters tonight’s game just one shy of 80 career wins. She has the second-most wins of all coaches in UB basketball history, trailing only Sal Buscaglia who compiled 155 wins in eight seasons with the Bulls (1990-98). Included in her 79-62 record at UB is a 39-15 record in nonconference games. • Senior Jessica Kochendorfer needs just 69 points entering the 2003-04 season to become the 13th player in Buffalo basketball history to reach the 1,000 mark for career scoring. With 555 rebounds at the start of the season, she is also on pace to become just the second player in UB history to score 1,200 career points and grab 700 career rebounds (joining former Buffalo standout Tiffany Bell). Kochendorfer is the MAC’s fifth-active returning scorer. • Seniors Jessica Kochendorfer and Kim Kilpela rank among the MAC’s active career double-double leaders. Kochendorfer is tied for second on the list (with Catie Knable of Marshall and Jessica Reiter of Ball State) with 13 career doubledoubles while Kilpela is fifth on the list with nine career double-doubles. • The Bulls will begin the season without their top returning three-point shooter, junior Erin Lawrenson, who is out of the lineup with an ankle injury. Lawrenson has battled injuries in each of her first two season at Buffalo, and she appeared in just 18 games last season while averaging 7.9 points per game and knocking down 27 three-point field goals. She ranks eighth all-time at UB with 61 career three-pointers. • The Bulls are wearing black patches on their uniforms this season in remembrance of Nan Harvey, UB’s former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator who passed away on September 2 after a lengthy battle with cancer. All of Buffalo’s sports teams are wearing similar patches on their uniforms throughout the 2003-04 season.

• 2003-04 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO BASKETBALL • SCOUTING THE GRIFFS Canisius is looking to build on a successful 2002-03 season when it posted a 16-14 overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The winning season was the Griffs’ first since the 1994-95 season, and the semifinal tournament appearance was just the second in their history. The Griffins return six letterwinners from one year ago, led by senior guard Jenel Stevens. Stevens is the 2003-04 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 20.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in her junior campaign. Senior Lonnie Brown averaged a career-high 11.8 points per game last year, and sophomore Cheri Wittlieb posted 9.4 points per game and drained 63 three-pointers en route to being named to the MAAC’s AllRookie Team. The Griffins were picked sixth in the MAAC’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll, behind Fairfield, Siena, Saint Peter’s, Niagara and Manhattan. Head coach Mike Decillis is in his sixth season at Canisius. He holds a 61-82 record with the Griffs and a 314-211 career record over 19 years as a head coach. At the end of September, Decillis announced that he will be retiring after the 2003-04 season with the Griffs.

• 2003-04 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO BASKETBALL • points, all made from the foul line. NWBL extended its lead to as many as eight points following the run before Buffalo was able to cut the lead to three, 45-42, at the half on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by sophomore Hollie Cook. Buffalo got within one again, 55-54, six and a half minutes into the second half following a jumper by Meunier, but NWBL then went on a 12-1 run to increase its lead to double digits, and the Bulls never got closer than 10 points after that. NWBL led by as many as 20 points, 86-66 and 88-68, before settling for the 16-point victory. Senior Kim Kilpela finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Bulls, and junior Allison Bennett added eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Cook led the Bulls with six assists, and Calderone finished with seven points. The Bulls were outrebounded by a 47-40 margin and committed 29 turnovers in the game while forcing NWBL to 23. SENIORS LOOKING TO END CAREERS ON A HIGH NOTE Seniors Jessica Kochendorfer and Kim Kilpela will lead the Bulls in 2003-04, both looking to end their successful careers on a high note. Kochendorfer is a three-year starter with career averages of 11.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She was an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection and team Most Valuable Player as a sophomore in 2001-02, and she has been a Preseason All-MAC selection in each of the past two seasons. Kilpela has career averages of 9.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She was a MAC All-Freshman Team selection in 1999-2000.

TOUGH SCHEDULE AHEAD The Bulls’ 2003-04 schedule includes four teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the most recent Associated Press and/or USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Top 25 polls - Colorado (16th USA Today, T16th AP), Auburn (receiving votes USA Today, 25th AP), Western Michigan (receiving votes AP) and Toledo (receiving votes USA Today). Auburn, the alma mater of UB assistant coach Evelyn Thompson , was the 2003 Postseason WNIT Champion, and Colorado advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and finished ranked 19th in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Top 25 poll last season. Holy Cross was also a 2003 NCAA Tournament participant and the 2003 Patriot League Champion. Including Auburn, Colorado and Holy Cross in the non-conference and Mid-American Conference opponents Western Michigan (NCAA), Ball State (WNIT) and Toledo (WNIT), the Bulls will face six teams in 2003-04 that advanced to the postseason last year.

HOME SWEET HOME Buffalo’s Alumni Arena is ranked among the nation’s toughest women’s basketball arenas to play in, according to a survey completed by Malcolm Butler, media relations director at Louisiana Tech. With a 189-75 women’s basketball record since its opening in 1982 through the end of the 2002-03 season, Alumni Arena has the 63rd-best winning percentage (71.6 percent) of all time and the 51st-best winning percentage among active arenas.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH Nobody is looking more forward to the start of the Mid-American Conference season than freshman Belinda Gibb since the MAC opener against Miami (OH) on January 7 will be the first game she is eligible to play. Gibb must sit out the first eight games of the 2003-04 season due to NCAA regulations regarding international student-

The win ended awarded the Athletic Director's Team Award at UB’s annual Athletic Buffalo's 2002-03 non-conference schedule at 8-3 overall, giving Dozier Awards Banquet on April 29, 2003. an impressive 39-15 non-conference record through her first five years at UB. DOZIER FINISHES THIRD IN

MAC COACH OF THE YEAR VOTING

Thanks to her team’s impressive turnaround and end-of-the-year surge, head coach Cheryl Dozier finished third in the voting for MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2002-03, behind Toledo’s Mark Ehlen and Miami’s Maria Fantanarosa. In addition to doubling their win total from a year ago, the Bulls, under Dozier’s direction, finished third in the East Division and tied for sixth overall in the MAC after being picked to finish fifth in the East and 10th overall in the league’s preseason poll. They then advanced to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Dozier earned her 70th career

COOK RANKS NATIONALLY IN ASSISTS PER GAME Sophomore Hollie Cook made an immediate impact on the Bulls and the Mid-American Conference during her freshman campaign. Cook racked up 175 assists on the season, the second-highest single-season total in UB basketball history. Only former MAC Defensive Player of the Year Sonia Ortega had more assists in a season with 188 in 1999-2000. Cook led the MAC and ranked 21st in the nation in assists per game (6.03). She also finished fourth in the league in steals per game (2.66). Cook averaged 5.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in her freshman season.

• 2003-04 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO BASKETBALL • OFFENSE AND DEFENSE MAKE THEIR MARKS The Bulls have always emphasized defense under head coach Cheryl Dozier, but in 2002-03, they made their mark nationally in two offensive statistical categories. Buffalo finished 19th in the nation in Division I in assists per game (17.1) and 25th in the nation in field goal percentage (.453). Buffalo’s defense was once again one of the best in the MAC, ranking in the top five in all six defensive categories - scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, rebounding defense, blocked shots, steals and defensive rebounds. The Bulls led the league in both field goal percentage defense (.382) and blocked shots per game (3.86). They held the league’s top mark for blocks in a game with 10 at Mount St. Mary’s on December 21. Senior Jessica Kochendorfer had seven of the 10 blocks in that game for the league’s top individual mark of the season. Her seven blocks were one shy of the UB single-game record.

COOK AND EULER GET GOLD Buffalo assistant coach Cheri Euler and sophomore Hollie Cook led the Western Open women’s basketball team to a gold medal at the 2003 Empire State Games, held in Buffalo. Euler and Cook were also both part of last year’s gold-medal winning Western Open team, and they have helped their squad go undefeated in Empire State Games competition over the past two years.

HEAD COACH CHERYL DOZIER Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier is in her sixth season with the Bulls, with an overall record of 79-62 entering tonight’s game. She has guided the Bulls to four winning seasons in five years to two record-setting starts and to national rankings in both offensive and defensive statistical categories during her tenure. Prior to taking over the reins as the 10th head coach in UB women’s basketball history, Dozier served as an assistant coach at Michigan State (1993-98), Ohio (1991-93) and Lake Superior State (1989-91). She is a 1989 graduate of Aquinas College where she was a four-year letterwinner. Year 1998-99 1999-00 2000-01 2001-02 2002-03 Totals
