PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY FOR TODAY Issue 5 ~ MAY 2012 ~ Volume 29

E XPANDING H ORIZONS

A crisis…a word from the Greek literally meaning A Fork In The Road, exists within a

growing number of fundamentalist Christianity clergy. The challenge for many facing this experience is they are so focused within what they were taught as being the unquestionable ultimate truth that when it no longer fills that space within their minds many find themselves in a very uncomfortable space, no longer able to be true to their original commitment and beliefs, and yet faced with insights that fly in the face of the basic philosophies of a specific creed or doctrine that has given them authority and stature.

Last year the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation did a radio interview and in it quoted from a published paper, “A recent study from Tufts University tells the story of several pastors who no longer believe in God. Most are still working in churches, still preaching sermons, and still counseling the faithful. They are isolated and, in some cases, unable to confide even in their own families, for fear of what their newfound disbelief may do to their relationships.” While the underlying meaning from the Greek of the word crisis is couched within neutrality—a fork in the road is neutral—it isn’t too neutral in the minds and hearts of the ministers/pastors in question, yet my mind puts forth the query, “Why not search out something that would be more in keeping with their new God-idea?” And, the answer probably is because they don’t think that there exists a system of thought and belief that is different… their tunnel vision now isn’t serving them. Do you remember ever questioning a God-idea that you may have at one time accepted and held simply as the truth, only at some point being faced with all levels of inner conflict as what was once so very true now just couldn’t be? Not a comfortable place to be, yet if you had a similar experience, because you are reading this article, it means you didn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. is the God-idea we now hold in and of itself sacrosanct? Always the answer must be “no” even if we might be quick to add that it is now serving us, yet to always maintain a willingness to be open, if not to a new and initially perceived radical something, to at least a fine tuning of the various components that make up what we might call our belief system, statement of faith or similar. is God changing? No, not changing, but most probably in and of itself unfolding its own reality, yet always within the basic reference points that are contained with love, life, peace and the many other attempts we have to explore God within our vocabularies. Nothing is ever static. Welcome moments of inner challenge as for whatever reason you may be faced with the opportunity to re-think or re-look at something that once served you. You might well find yourself taking the fork in the road of your journey that reaffirms what might be questioned, or a new adventure down serendipitously wonderful paths might open. indeed, we can always say that the energy we call God certainly is love, life and peace (and more), but applications of these ideas within our lives might well change, perhaps becoming more inclusive or similar. Blinders never serve us well. Unity’s co-founder, Charles Fillmore, is often quoted as stating what he believed at that moment should never limit him to a mind-changing idea at a future time. What a wonderful thought to keep for the self as our wonderful journey unfolds and we also become more inclusive in our love, life and peace. SALLY rADUeNZeL FOr TWeLVe YeArS, Sally has called Tucson and Unity Church her home. She is pleased to return as Artist of the Month for the second time. Her exhibit will primarily feature florals, still lifes, and landscapes of the desert southwest. She paints in a representational style utilizing watercolor along with acrylics and some collage. She has sketched and painted since childhood, watching her artist father create beautiful oil paintings. She believes that life is a continuing process for learning and growing and art is very much a part of that for her. Sally is a past president for the Southern Arizona Arts Guild (SAAG) 2010-2011, and a member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (SAWG). She recently completed a watercolor workshop given by nationally recognized Seattle artist Stan Miller. Sally is looking forward to sharing her art with us. Along with original work, selected prints and note cards will be displayed. She will be available the first and last Sundays in May to meet people in person. [email protected].

4T prOSperiTY CLASS

in 1988 STreTTON SMiTH, a Unity Minister, brought together a prosperity series that he called 4T. it is patterned after a 12 step program, and in the eyes of many is a coming together of ideas that cause the “addiction” to lack and poverty to be addressed and overcome. To date, well over 200 thousand people have taken this class...and more than a few right here at Unity of Tucson. Starting WeDNeSDAY, MAY 9 at 6:30 pm, a class will be offered and facilitated by our Board. Should anyone not be able to attend every class (a requirement) a make-up viewing of the DVD can be arranged here at the Church. After the second class no new participants can be accepted as each gathering builds upon the previous classes and bonding occurs. each of the over 200 thousand people who has taken the class has entered into a contractual agreement with the presenting facility, agreeing over the 12 weeks to tithe of time, talent and treasure (4T). remember, if there is shortage in one’s life, it isn’t the Universe that is running out...somehow it is the consciousness of the individual, and a commitment of this level of tithing of one’s time, talent and treasure quickly does its perfect work to bring one into alignment with the flow of the greater good through them. Our commitment to you? After fulfilling your commitment of tithing time, talent and treasure over the full twelve weeks, if your life hasn’t been blessed by the experience, and upon a written request within two weeks after the final class, to return the talent of treasure, which is defined by the class as 10% of one’s gross income. After each service on the two Sundays prior to the start of the class...ApriL 29 and MAY 6, a 15 minute introductory DVD will be shown in Harmony Hall. Whether or not a decision is made to commit to the class, at least make a commitment to watch the DVD. For many people, this class has been a life changing decision.

Shortly after our annual business meeting this year a congregant suggested that more frequent and wider reaching communication of the church finances would go a long way toward reducing our current trends. With this in mind, Steve Ross our treasurer, reports current year figures along with a possible solution. “In the first three months of 2012 church donations and income have only been $74,408. This has put the church a little over $16,000 in the red so far this year. We have savings to cover this but are conscious of the trend this is setting. History has shown us that donations decline during the summer months as our winter visitors go back to the north and the rest of us take long vacations. i want to remind everyone that we still pay the normal operating expenses and carry on with all our ministries during the summer. Larry, Mary ellen, Linda, Molly and the rest of the team are here during the summer months providing spiritual education and activities. please keep this in mind as you plan your summer activities. Consider adding to your donation before leaving or continuing to support us through the summer. This could reverse an undesirable trend and be a blessing to our church.”

UNiTY OF TUCSON is financially supported through your tithes and offerings. This ministry does not get subsidies from a central office or headquarters. We know that God is the Source of this Church. We see all required financial resources rushing to us through God’s many channels of abundance.

NeW SMALL STUFFeD ANiMALS are welcome to occupy the chairs in our Sanctuary starting Mother’s Day and continuing until Christmas in July. Way back in 2002, (SOFiA Sisters of Faith in Action) decided this was a great outreach program for Unity of Tucson. Since then, it has become a tradition. On Sundays (and sometimes during the week) plush critters like bears, bunnies, doggies, kitties, and maybe a hippo, giraffe, elephant or gorilla drop in and stay, anticipating the next Sunday when their human friends come to hold and love them for an hour or more. During other activities the event attendees are invited to share their chairs asking only to be held and loved. After the Christmas in July Services, we pack them up and donate them to organizations that offer them to children and adults who welcome the love shared by all of us participating in this special event. Additional news: This year our summer event, SEW And CHAT happens on SATUrDAY, JULY 14. More information about this ongoing event will be in our June issue of Expanding Horizons.

UNiTY CLASSiCS... Myrtle Fillmore, Mother of Unity, researched, written and edited over a two-year period by Thomas e. Witherspoon, is an attempt to accurately and honestly record the life of Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity. The writer poured through thousands of documents, letters, and articles by or about Mrs. Fillmore; visited every area where she lived — from Ohio to Missouri to Texas and Colorado; and talked to many persons who knew her personally. UNiTY CLASSiC LiBrArY SerieS... in 1890 Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, formed what was to become Silent Unity. She received many letters requesting advice on how to deal with life’s challenges. Compiled by Frances W. Foulks, Myrtle Fillmore’s Healing Letters contains extracts from her letters that introduce Myrtle page Fillmore to you as she knew herself and as no one else could. in Lessons in Truth, H. emilie Cady teaches that our lives can be transformed by the power of our thoughts, words and beliefs. The spiritual concepts presented in these 12 lessons show us how to increase our personal empowerment and enhance our spiritual growth. She encourages us to find our truth as it is written in our own hearts and then apply these truths in every area of our lives. Begin to live life more abundantly through Georgiana Tree West’s Prosperity’s Ten Commandments. in this enlightening volume, she expands the traditional understanding of the Ten Commandments, revealing them as guidelines to a happy, prosperous life. Learn how to use the wisdom found in these pages in financial affairs and everyday living. Breaking the Ten Commandments, discover the deeper Meaning, by eric Butterworth encourages you to break the Ten Commandments, not through sinning, but by cutting through archaic language to unlock “hidden” meanings in biblical text. in doing so, the Commandments become more than a set of laws decreed by a divine dictator. Spanish translation books (Unity as well as other best sellers) are now in one area, the other side of the New Arrivals display case on the left as you enter the bookstore.

Dear parents and grandparents, HAppY SpriNGTiMe!!! easter is behind us as we continue on to birth ourselves anew, each moment, in recognition of the Christ within us, that is eternal and unchanging. easter season in our Children’s Ministry was dedicated to getting this metaphysical understanding of easter across to children, most coming with the meaning of easter tied to bunnies and easter eggs. To travel from the seeming violence that led up to the resurrection, and have children truly get that within even tragedy and horrific events, such as what happened to Jesus, God is present and has a Big plan for our lives. The faith that Jesus showed, we to must show in our lives. As we studied the easter story, reading and discussing the events that led up to Jesus resurrection; from His arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey, overturning the stalls of the moneychangers in the Temple, bringing Lazarus back to life, His experience with Judas, the arrest, and subsequent crucifixion. To see the children learn to process the story of easter, to see their faces lighten as the women came to the open tomb and the angel said to them “Why seek the living among the dead?” was significant. The children appeared to come into a more positive and i think more profound understanding of Jesus’ process and their own. Delightful! We encourage you to offer a small portion of your time helping children gain spiritual understanding, such as they did through the easter story. A time-gift of just sixty minutes every month or two would be greatly appreciated. if you would prefer to choose the season of the year you would like to help, we are flexible and appreciative. We gladly will provide the support, materials and training. You may prefer to assist, rather than teach, and that is fine. Thank you Bettye and Dianne for your wonderful teamwork! please address your responses to Susan Cooper, phone: 885.0117, email: [email protected]. You may also leave a note in my box in the Church office. Love and Blessings, Susan Cooper Children’s Church Director
