UTSA students inspired to liberate the leader inside SAN ANTONIO, April 2013 – College of Business students Michelle Banks, Salma Mendez and Victor Camino were among only 30 students in the country selected from a pool of more than 250 applicants to participate in the 5th Annual Nestlé USA Leadership Symposium for Diverse Leaders of Tomorrow. Held in Glendale, Calif., at the Nestlé USA Headquarters, the symposium was a four-day intensive business program where a select few minority undergraduate students had the opportunity to network with the Nestlé USA executive leadership team, take a customized course in leadership development, and showcase their leadership skills by volunteering in the community. Having recently returned from the leadership symposium, Banks, Mendez and Camino found the experience to be rewarding. “My experience at Nestlé USA is one I will never forget. It opened my eyes to so many possibilities for my future,” said Banks. “Along with the connections I made with my fellow participants and the executive leaders, my biggest takeaway was the Leadership Challenge course. It is a statistical portal which gathers quantitative data on 60,000 topics on media, business, finance, politics, and a wide variety of other areas worldwide. Among 18,000 sources are market research reports, trade publications, scientific publications, government databases, and more. This resource may also come handy in a variety of business school courses.

Thank you, COB Student Who Wants to Stay Enrolled Dear Proactive Student, The months of March through August can always be a confusing time for students because of overlapping registration periods, drop dates, payment deadlines, etc. Tuition and Fee payment deadlines for both summer and fall 2013 terms, can be found at: http://utsa.edu/fiscalservices/ deadlines.html. Here is a recap of important dates to keep you on track for summer and fall registration and other pertinent deadlines. Did you know you could possibly find some courses offered during the May Mini-mester period? Students are allowed to enroll into 3 hours for the May Mini-mester which is only three weeks long and runs from May 13-June 1. Last day to register is May 13. Last day to drop is May 29. The first 5-week summer term runs from June 3 – July 10. Last day to register is June 4 and last day to drop is July 3. The second 5-week summer term runs from July 11 – August 17. Last day to register is July 12 and last day to drop is August 12. Fall 2013 term runs from August 28 – December 21. Last day to register is September 4 and last day to drop is December 4. Danielle Montes - Refining Excellence at Valero So, when you think of Valero, what comes to mind? Great gas prices at the station on UTSA Boulevard and IH-10, beautifully lit trees at the entrance to their corporate headquarters during December, or, free parking within walking distance to the College of Business? What about an accounting career? No, you say Valero is just for engineers? Think again! Valero offers great careers, not only for engineers, but for all business majors, as well. Need more convincing? Allow me to introduce you to Danielle Montes, a UTSA senior (May 2013) majoring in accounting. Ms. Montes currently has an Accounting Internship in Wholesale Refined Products Accounting with Valero Energy Corporation. Just how did Ms. Montes decide that she wanted to pursue an internship in accounting with Valero? Back in the fall of 2010, when Ms. Montes was a sophomore, she attended the UTSA All-Majors Career Fair (Action 7), learned about the Valero Internship Program (VIP) and determined that she would apply. It was several months later, in spring 2011, when a recruiter from Valero called her and asked that she interview for an internship in the Commercial Analysis Department for the summer of 2011. Although she did not have much time to prepare for the interview, she did three very important things that gave her the edge in the interview: 1. Spoke a friend who was working at Valero and asked about her interview and internship experience (Action 14), 2. Reviewed a homework assignment from Intermediate Accounting where she analyzed key areas of Valero’s financial statement, and, 3. Prepared and practiced her responses to common interview questions (Action 17). Danielle Montes’s efforts and preparation paid off when she was offered an internship for the summer of 2011 in the Commercial Analysis Department of Valero. At the end of the summer, she was invited to return as an intern for the summer of 2012 (Action 9)! Meanwhile, in the spring of 2011, while Ms. Montes was waiting to hear a response from Valero, she also applied and interviewed for an accounting internship at Padgett Stratemann & Co., LLP, for the spring of 2012 internship. She received and accepted an offer for that internship (Action 9). So, yes, Ms. Montes has had THREE internships – one with Padgett Stratemann & Co, LLP, sandwiched between her two summer stints at Valero, all before her senior year. (Continued on page 14)

Danielle Montes - Refining Excellence … continued from pg. 3. At the end of her summer 2012 internship with Valero, Danielle Montes was offered an extension of her internship through the fall. During that time, she spoke with her supervisor about transferring to the accounting department – a transition that she made this spring. If you are still counting, that makes five internships! Ms. Montes’s title in her signature line says it all, “On-going Accounting Intern”. So, just what does a commercial analysis intern do? Ms. Montes stated that in that position she actualized pipeline transfers in SAP and reviewed/entered invoices for various barge fees. She went on to say that she also calculated and input demurrage for barge freight invoices. As an accounting intern, she assisted in processing reversals and rebills for customer invoices, paying invoices and provided assistance to other accountants in her department, as needed. When asked to describe her typical work day, Ms. Montes replied: I come in at 7:30 a.m. and immediately respond to e-mails in my inbox. I then prioritize my duties for the day. If I have a request to process returns and rebills, I make that my top priority. I then pay invoices. If I have any downtime I ask the people in my Department if I can help them with any of their work (Action 11). I have a flexible work schedule because of classes, so I work a total of 30 hours during the week. I work full eight hour days for three days during the week and four hour days for two. Having completed so many internships has left Ms. Montes with an abundance of memorable experiences. When asked about them, she stated that getting to know and becoming friends with the other interns ranked high among the memories that stood out. She went on to say: At the Valero headquarters we have around 40 plus interns during the summer in Accounting, Information Systems, Engineering and General Business. Not only do you meet great people, but you also get to learn about many different aspects of the company as we learn about each other’s internships (Action 14). Valero also holds an Intern Symposium that lasts four days during the summer where all interns from Headquarters and refineries meet to attend workshops, listen to executives, and have fun. When asked how her network has grown, Ms. Montes stated that she has met people from all over the country by being actively involved at events that Valero holds for interns and employees. She reflected that you never know who your contacts may know and how your network can continue to expand (Action 14). Ms. Monte has great advice for fellow students. She shares that students should start their internship search early! (Remember, Ms. Montes started hers at the beginning of her sophomore year.) She also offers these tips: 1. Research internships as soon as possible and then select several to pursue (Action 17) 2. Know the recruiting process and prepare for it (Action 17) 3. Networking with fellow students early on – you never know who has completed an internship at a company that is of interest to you (Action 14) 4. Join an organization (Ms. Montes is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting honors organization) (Action 5) 5. Complete the Career Action Program (CAP) to perfect your resume, polish your interviewing skills and learn how to network (Action 11) 6. Meet with your Career Counselor and Academic Advisor every semester (Action 3) 7. Attend the many career fairs, information sessions, and CSPD corporate panel events, such as Business Career Days, Ready-Set-Success, and specific industry days (Action 7) Danielle Montes feels that her experiences in internships have prepared her for full-time employment by giving her hands-on experience and teaching her to apply what she learned in college. She adds that her internships have given her realistic expectations for future employment situations. So, speaking of future employment, I asked Danielle what her plans are for post-graduation. She responded that she was just given an offer for (and accepted) a full-time accounting position at Valero. Her title changed today, from, “On-going Accounting Intern” to “Associate Accountant”. With extensive experience in the field of human resources management already, she has held internships with Travelers Insurance and USAA and will complete another internship position with USAA this summer. Additionally, Banks is active in the Golden Key International Honor Society, the UTSA Society for Human Resources Management and UTSA Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education and Service (V.O.I.C.E.S.) “Nestlé DLS ’13 was an invaluable conference that taught me to fearlessly empower others to struggle for shared aspirations, and to always align my actions with my values,” said Mendez. “As a result of the Leadership Challenge course, I am inspired to liberate the leader inside and use my skills to keep UTSA moving forward. I am honored to have had the opportunity to build connections and share success stories with highly-ranked employees at Nestle and with student leaders across the U.S.” Mendez is a first-year student studying international business at UTSA. With a grade point average of 3.96, she takes advantage of nearly every opportunity that comes her way. As an interested future member of the Investment Society at UTSA, she went to Costa Rica over spring break with UTSA professor Ron Sweet and a group of students to learn about micro-lending. This May, she will travel to Italy for a Maymester course through the Honors College. She is also active in the UTSA Business Student Council, Terry Scholar Student Organization, Student Leadership Center and the Honors College Advisory Board. Banks and Mendez are part of the Business Scholars Program, a one-on-one mentoring program for first-generation college students offered by the UTSA College of Business Center for Student Professional Development. It provides academic, leadership and professional development through mentorship and community service activities. “The symposium taught me to have more confidence in my abilities and that I can do whatever I put my mind to,” said Camino. “I also learned the importance of always being thankful for the people who help us get to where we are.” Camino, a business administration management and marketing major, is also a first -generation college student. He holds the title of Mr. UTSA for the 2012-2013 academic year, and is active in a number of organizations including the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, UTSA Ambassadors, UTSA Global Business Club and the Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos.
