S As a resident, business, or other member of the New Jersey community, it is important to know these easy things you can do every day to protect our water. Limit your use of fertilizers and pesticides „ Do a soil test to see if you need a fertilizer. „ Do not apply fertilizers if heavy rain is predicted. „ Look into alternatives for pesticides. „ Maintain a small lawn and keep the rest of your property or yard in a natural state with trees and other native vegetation that requires little or no fertilizer.

„ Do not pour any hazardous products down a storm drain because storm drains are usually connected to local waterbodies and the water is not treated.

„ Hazardous products include some household or commercial cleaning products, lawn and garden care products, motor oil, antifreeze, and paints.

Properly use and dispose of hazardous products

Make sure you properly store or discard any unused portions.

Easy Things You Can Do Every Day To Protect Our Water

A Guide to Healthy Habits for Cleaner Water

P ollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain into storm drains, then directly to our drinking water supplies and the ocean and lakes our children play in. Fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings: You name it and it ends up in our water.

Stormwater pollution is one of New Jersey’s greatest threats to clean and plentiful water, and that’s why we’re all doing something about it. By sharing the responsibility and making small, easy changes in our daily lives, we can keep common pollutants out of stormwater. It all adds up to cleaner water, and it saves the high cost of cleaning up once it’s dirty. As part of New Jersey’s initiative to keep our water clean and plentiful and to meet federal requirements, many municipalities and other public agencies including colleges and military bases must adopt ordinances or other rules prohibiting various activities that contribute to stormwater pollution. Breaking these rules can result in fines or other penalties.

„ If you use fertilizers and pesticides, follow the instructions on the label on how to correctly apply it.

„ Many municipalities and other public agencies must enact and enforce a rule that prohibits wildlife feeding in these areas.

„ Do not feed wildlife, such as ducks and geese, in public areas.

Don’t feed wildlife

„ Never discard pet waste in a storm drain.

„ Dispose of the wrapped pet waste in the trash or unwrapped in a toilet.

„ Use newspaper, bags or pooper-scoopers to pick up wastes.

„ Make sure you know your town’s or agency’s requirements and comply with them. It’s the law. And remember to:

„ An example is requiring pet owners or their keepers to pick up and properly dispose of pet waste dropped on public or other people’s property.

„ Many municipalities and public agencies must enact and enforce local pet-waste rules.

Clean up after your pet

„ If you have hazardous products in your home or workplace, make sure you store or dispose of them properly. Read the label for guidance.

Recycle used motor oil.

„ Use natural or less toxic alternatives when possible. „ „ Contact your municipality, county or facility management office for the locations of hazardous-waste disposal facilities.

Keep pollution out of storm drains „ Municipalities and many other public agencies are required to mark certain storm drain inlets with messages reminding people that storm drains are connected to local waterbodies. „ Do not let sewage or other wastes flow into a stormwater system.

Don’t litter „ Place litter in trash receptacles. „ Recycle. Recycle. Recycle. „ Participate in community cleanups.

Dispose of yard waste properly „ Keep leaves and grass out of storm drains. „ If your municipality or agency has yard waste collection rules, follow them. „ Use leaves and grass clippings as a resource for compost. „ Use a mulching mower that recycles grass clippings into the lawn.

Township of Long beach 6805 Long Beach Blvd. Brant Beach, NJ 08008

We hope you enjoy the 2016 Long Beach Township Trash and Recycling Calendar. This year's theme is 'Know Your Recyclables’, with each month being devoted to a particular item. We wish to emphasize the importance of residents/taxpayers being diligent about recycling and to encourage their renters as well, where applicable, by providing recycling information and adequate receptacles for rental units. Please note there is a change in the pick-up schedule during the Summer, which begins on May 16th and ends on September 9th. Trash and recycling will no longer be picked up on the same day in your section. There will still be two weekly pick-ups, but trash and recycling will be picked up on separate days. The calendar shows the respective days. The remaining period represents the Winter schedule with one weekly pick-up for each. The 2016 brush pick-up will remain the same (Wednesday) but residents must email [email protected] or call (609) 361-6676 to schedule a pick-up. For metal pick-ups (refrigerators, appliances, TV's, etc.) the same procedure should be followed. Recycling is just one part of the Township's commitment to improving the environment. For example, through the Sustainable Jersey Program, the Township was the first town to receive the Municipal Blue Star Award from Clean Ocean Action for protecting our water ways and received the 2015 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award (GEEA) in the Healthy and Sustainable Communities category for innovative actions such as the Shuttle service, hydration stations, and dune vegetation program. Also, our Environmental Coordinator was designated as an Environmental Champion by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As you can see, successful recycling is only one of the achievements for which the Township has received recognition at the Federal and State level. Without the residents/taxpayers participation, the Township would not have achieved these recognitions and we would like to thank you for your assistance.

Recycling continues to have a positive financial impact on the Township. It costs the Township $71.21 for each ton of residential municipal waste it sends to the Ocean County landfill. In 2014, the Township disposed of 7,833 tons of residential waste at a cost of $557,788. During this same period, the Township recycled 1,984 tons of material avoiding an additional payment of $141,308 in landfill fees. Plus, the Township received payments of $12,767 for its recycled material.

The Recycling Drop-off Center, located at 7910 Long Beach Blvd. in Beach Haven Crest, is open year round. The schedule for Recycling hours is listed in the calendar and also on our Township website at www.longbeachtownship.com. If you have any questions, contact Trash and Recycling at (609) 361-6676.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe New Year.
