SPRING SPORTS RECAP 2015 Lacrosse Season Review

This year’s senior class saw 23 Mustangs graduate, our largest by far. Two seniors will move on to play college lacrosse with both heading to Illinois Wesleyan University: Bailey Marth & Jack Sampson. Marth became the all-time leader in points scored in a career with 192 points over his three-year varsity career. Six players achieved all-conference recognition: Bailey Marth, Jack Gorman, Joe Brettman, Alec Sampson, Austin Tiernan and Kennedy Dowling. The Mustangs had the 18th ranked hardest schedule in the state of Illinois with over 90 teams in competition, finishing the season with an overall 11-11 record and a 4th place finish in the Chicago Catholic League. “The future is bright for the St Rita Lacrosse program”, said coach Jimmy Juchcinski, ‘97. “This year’s JV team took 2nd place in the CCL. The freshmen placed 3rd in a very competitive 16-team Warren Tournament. St. Rita was the only south side of Chicago team invited.” Also, next year’s incoming freshmen class boasts over 20 freshmen with prior lacrosse experience, adding to the depth of our very competitive program.

2015 Volleyball Season Review

“The 2015 season for the St. Rita Volleyball Program has been a great learning experience for all involved”, said first-year Head Coach Brian Hagen, ‘04. “On a team that featured only three seniors, it was expected that there would be some bumps in the road.” The turning point of the season was at the Br. Rice Smack Attack tournament, where the team entered with a six-match losing streak but then went 4-1, with the only loss coming to eventual tournament champion Sandburg. The Mustangs defeated Plainfield East in pool play, followed by Eisenhower and Walter Payton Prep. Then the Mustangs capped off the day with an emotional three-set victory over Marist. Senior Jack Danaher, ‘15, son of John Danaher, ’80, notched his first of two All-Tournament Team nods this season. The Mustangs continued their winning ways en route to a seven-match win streak. “The most significant accomplishment for this team was not achieved on the court, but rather in the classroom, where our team boasts a cumulative 3.9 grade point average”, said Coach Hagen. The team was one of only 29 boys high schools in the Nation to earn an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.

2015 Track Season Review

The 2015 Mustang Track team built on recent success. Major highlights included University of Minnesota-bound Eric Walker’s season as indoor state champ in 60-meter hurdles. Eric also set school records in 55-meter, 60-meter and 110-meter hurdles, earning him the distinction as the first St. Rita Mustang Illinois Prep Top Times State Champion. Head Track Coach Jonathan Daniel said, “Eric didn’t get rattled at big track meets. I believe this was due, in part, to his experience as a St. Rita Football player. Those big track meets have the same atmosphere as a big Friday-night Catholic League football game.” Upper Iowa University-bound D’Vante Glenn was the CCL indoor champ in the 200m dash and the 4x100 relay team was the second-fastest in St. Rita history. Coach Daniel also encourages his track athletes to play other sports. He says, “Specialization in one sport at this age is not optimal. Multi-sport athletes often maintain a higher level of fitness and work different muscle groups benefitting their overall athleticism.” The future of St. Rita Track is bright, as we expect big things from returning Ritmen LaShaun Rule, Theo Phipps, Kurt Roberts, Louis Cox and Dexter Warren, who excelled this season in competition.

2015 Waterpolo Season Review

St. Rita was close to powerhouse status in Coach Sigfredo Cruz’s third season at the helm. St. Rita entered sectional week at 17-11 and was the second seed, the best in program history, at the Lyons Township sectional. “Besides high school, these kids haven’t played water polo, so they have been committed and grown as a group,” said Cruz. The Mustangs won the Br. Rice tournament with a dominant performance over Lockport on April 25. The Mustangs found the back of the net 19 times in a 19-9 victory over the Porters. St. Rita also topped Hinsdale Central 20-6 and beat the host and Metro Catholic Aquatic Conference rival Br. Rice 10-8 in that competition. A week later, the Mustangs finished as the runner-up in the St. Charles North tournament. Eric Johnson was the team’s top goal scorer. Matthew Lopez was another strong offensive player for St. Rita. Two other seniors, Kevin Cronin and Daniel Sliazas, were two of the Mustangs defensive anchors. St. Rita was strong in net, thanks to senior Chris McMahon, who was also a standout goalkeeper for the soccer team. Cruz said junior Lorenzo Henrichs and sophomores Joe Qualter, Ethan Johnson and Matthew Petriekis all provided a lift to the team. Keep an eye on the up-and-coming St. Rita Water Polo program!

2015 Baseball Season Review

The varsity baseball team ended their season in the sectional championship game losing a heartbreaker 5-4 to the host Mt. Carmel Caravan. There were many highlights to the 2015 season, including a 25-game winning streak to begin the year, a Mingo Bay Classic Championship on the annual spring trip to Myrtle Beach, the 13th regional championship in the past 14 years, another 30+ win campaign, and the first #1 ranking in the country for any St. Rita team since the 1963 National Championship Football Team. The Mustangs were led by All-Catholic League Blue selections senior shortstop Marty Bechina (Michigan St.), who also won the Tony Lawless Award, senior pitcher/2B Tyler Halas (Tennessee), junior outfielder Danny Gleaves, and sophomore catcher Cal Greenfield. The 2015 senior class will have 13 players going on to play college baseball.

108TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES On Sunday, May 17th, the 108th graduating class from St. Rita of Cascia High School received their diplomas in the shrine chapel on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Very Reverend Bernard C. Scianna, O.S.A., Ph.D. ’83 presided over the Baccalaureate Mass, while Fr. Thomas McCarthy, O.S.A. ’83 served as the homilist. Rev. Bernard Danber, O.S.A. ’68, Rev. John Dowling, O.S.A. ’60, Rev. Richard Young, O.S.A. ’82, Rev. William McFarlane (HON) and Rev. Thomas Jackson, O.P. concelebrated the mass. This class received a record $ 17,568,656 in college scholarships, a 13% increase over the then-record $ 15.3 Million from the class of 2014. “I am confident these 181 graduates will continue to make us proud as they move on – they will take the solid and rich foundation they received here with them into the world”, said Guidance Counselor Mr. Wes Benak, ‘81. “It’s a testament to what they can do and a re-affirmation of what we, as an institution, have been doing for 110 years – and will continue to do for a very long time.” The majority of these most recent Ritamen will be heading off to colleges and universities in 26 states this fall, including Villanova University, Michigan State University, University of Tennessee, Seton Hall University, University of Illinois, University of Miami, Xavier University and Ball State University, to name just a few. In addition, eight members of this class will be serving their country by entering the Armed Services upon graduation, including the United States Naval Academy. Included in the graduating class of 2015 are the following: • Eighty-five members of the National Honor Society • Thirty-eight Presidential Education Award Winners • Nineteen Illinois State Scholars • Twenty-nine Heeney Award Recipients (straight A’s) The first thing anyone associated with St. Rita thinks about when the words ‘St. Rita High School’ are mentioned is FAMILY. As Fr. Tom loves to say, “You come to St. Rita for four years, but you stay for a lifetime.” The class of 2015 personifies that statement. Ninety-one of the graduates are at least a 2nd generation Ritaman (four graduates are 3rd generation Ritamen and one is a 4th generation Ritaman) while 100 of the graduates have at least one brother who graduated before them from St. Rita. We wish the best of luck and much success to them as we prepare to welcome the class of 2019 this August.

RITAMAN LUNCHEONS Great way to re-connect with classmates

In the fall of 1947, 430 students made up the freshman class of St. Rita High School. The majority of that class, not unlike many freshman classes before and since, had come to St. Rita as complete strangers, including the five Ritamen pictured above (left to right: Bob Borkowski, St. Bruno parish; Joe Eraci, Santa Maria Incoronata parish; Frank Shubat, Assumption Croation parish; John Doyle, St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish; Stew McCutcheon, Little Flower parish; and Tom Doyle, St. Rose of Lima parish). “Fr. Casey was a teacher and the band director at St. Rita who used to say mass every Sunday at our church,” said Joe Eraci. “He always talked about how great St. Rita was, so he’s why I came.” In the 68 years since these men first met, they stay connected via the monthly Ritaman luncheons held on campus the second Wednesday of every month (except June and August). St. Rita grads from 40 years and prior are always invited. The July luncheon is a barbeque where Frank Shubat and Butch Bianco, ’59, man the grills and cook the chicken and sausage for the Ritamen in attendance, many of whom bring their wives to join in the camaraderie and fun the day turns into. Each luncheon costs $10 and averages 50 graduates, with the July barbeque hosting grads from 1942 through 1975. “It’s great to come back to our school and witness the character of the student body during our visits,” said Tom Doyle, a retired educator and a 2014 St. Rita Hall of Fame inductee. “I have great memories of my years at St. Rita, especially on the basketball team with my teammates John Piccone and Jerry Trandel in the early 50’s and my coach, Barney Badke, ’35. I’m proud of our athletic sports teams but even more proud to hear of the great academic achievements and college scholarships offered to so many young men and their families.” Please call Mike Swanson in your alumni office at (773) 925-5029 for more information or to reserve your spot at the September Ritaman luncheon.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Connor Healy St. Cajetan Grammar School, Class of 2011 • St. Rita Valedictorian, Class of 2015 "One of the best things about St. Rita is everyone's involvement in activities. All of the students and teachers are very passionate about the school, and want to spend time together outside of the classroom. During my time here, I was involved in many activities, including Knights of Augustine, Scholastic Bowl, and volleyball. The clubs and sports offered at St. Rita are a great way to become more involved and promote the Augustinian core value of Unitas. The school's academic program challenged me to work hard every day and strive to become a better Ritaman. All of the teachers are very knowledgable and truly guide each and every student to reach their full potential. As an Augustinian school, St. Rita's classes are rooted in St. Augustine's search to find truth and his role in the world. These values are integrated daily and are the heart of a St. Rita education. After the completion of my high school years, I have decided to continue my Augustinian education at Villanova University. The past four years have prepared me for whatever my future holds. My experiences at St. Rita has left an indelible mark on me, and I will always consider the school a second home."

ST. RITA SCHOLARSHIP GOLF OUTING “Come for four years, stay for a lifetime”...this motto was

personified on a picture-perfect Friday, July 24, 2015 on 36 holes at beautiful Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont. The warm, sunny weather helped spur over 200 committed St. Rita Alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends all turn out for a fun day of golf and fellowship, while raising funds to help a St. Rita college-preparatory education stay as affordable as possible. This year’s outing raised in excess of $45,000, all of which goes to help fund scholarships and tuition assistance for current Ritamen and their families! Alumni golfers turned out from decades spanning almost 70 years, starting with graduates from the 1950s through recent graduates from the 2010s. St. Rita parents and friends made a strong showing at the outing and dinner, too. Our generous sponsors helped to make the day a success. Lucky silent auction and raffle winners went home with opportunities to play golf at some of Chicagoland's most challenging, private country clubs and also scored some one-of-a-kind items of Mustang gear, including authentic St. Rita sports uniforms and an actual City of Chicago 63rd & Claremont street sign! We are already looking forward to the 41st Annual St. Rita Scholarship Golf Outing, in less than one year, at Gleneagles Country Club on Friday, July 22, 2016!

PLANNED GIVING We invite your partnership in continuing the storied heritage of St. Rita of Cascia High School by becoming a member of The 1905 Guild. This honorary society celebrates the traditions of St. Rita of Cascia High School and its legacy to the future. It is comprised of generous benefactors who have provided for St. Rita in their estate plans in the way of a will, life-income agreement, charitable remainder trust, gift annuity, life insurance policy, or remainder interest in a residence or farm.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill

The 1905 Guild is named to celebrate the year our tradition of excellence began on the Southside of Chicago. That year, Fr. James F. Green, O.S.A brought the Augustinian core values of Truth, Unity and Love to 63rd and Claremont. During the 109 years since, over 23,000 men have benefited from these core values. We honor and thank all farsighted individuals who are part of The 1905 Guild. We are grateful for their commitment to the ideals of Augustinians and St. Rita High School’s mission of excellence that is continuing to thrive today.

There are several ways to become a member of the 1905 Guild. Examples include (but are not limited to): CASH GIFTS: charitable gifts are most often made in the form of cash, checks and electronic transfers. These type gifts may be used to eliminate federal income taxes as well as state income taxes. SECURITIES: Gifts of appreciated stock, mutual funds or other securities are a quick, easy way to support St. Rita. The donation of stock which has been held for more than one year will qualify for a deduction of the stock’s entire market value and no capital gains taxes will be due. LIFE-INCOME GIFTS: Income producing gifts can provide donors with an income stream, potential tax-savings and the satisfaction of supplying St. Rita with vital long-term resources. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS: Cash, securities or other appreciated assets are placed into a trust, where the trust can pay a percentage of the principal to St. Rita (Remainder Unitrust) or the trust makes fixed payments to St. Rita (Remainder Annuity Trust). LIFE INSURANCE: If you own life insurance policies that are no longer needed for their original purpose, the value of such policies may be used to make a gift that can provide welcome income tax savings today and can also result in significant estate tax savings in the future. RETIREMENT ASSETS: You can name St. Rita as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or other qualified plans. REAL ESTATE: You can make a gift through a donation of residential, commercial or underdeveloped real estate.
