Commencement Customs and Costumes The colorful ceremonies of commencement derive from practices originating in the Middle Ages. When European universities were taking form in the 12th and 13th centuries, the scholars were usually clerics as well, and consequently, they adopted costumes similar to those of their monastic orders. Cold halls and drafty buildings made caps and floor-length capes with attached hoods a necessity for warmth. Probably because of the costumes’ religious heritage, they remained drab until the universities gradually began to pass to public and private control, whereupon some aspects of the costume took on brighter hues. However, old prints and engravings reveal strong similarities between the regalia worn in early universities and the academic costumes worn today. Originally round, the shape of the cap is now the more familiar mortarboard square -a shape which, according to ballad folklore, resembles a scholar’s book. The black cap and tassel are worn by holders of all three degrees; however, the doctor’s cap may be of velvet and the tassel of gold. The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship for it covers any dress which might indicate rank or social status. The master’s gown may be worn open or closed and has long pointed sleeves. The Ph.D. gown is distinguished by broad velvet bars on the full bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning. The hood (usually not worn by holders of the bachelor’s degree) is a black shell, silk lined in the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The master’s hood is shorter than the doctoral hood. The velvet border of the hood is the color signifying the field of learning in which the degree was earned and not the department in which the major study was done. Thus, a degree conferred as doctor of philosophy requires the dark blue of philosophy, not the color of the department from which the major study was done. High school graduates typically choose a gown, cap and tassel of their school colors, while college graduation gowns are black. The universities represented by colors lining the hoods worn by our faculty are too numerous to be listed here; however, please feel free to ask individual faculty members which institutions their colors represent. 38

A Tradition of Excellence J.J. Pearce High School was founded in 1967 when a tenth grade was added at Richardson North Junior High School. With a new high school building completed in 1968, it hosted tenth- and eleventh-grade classes for the 19681969 school year. Pearce graduated its first class of seniors in 1970. The school is named for Dr. Joseph Jones Pearce (1907-1995), who was Superintendent of the Richardson Independent School District from 1946 until 1977. Dr. Pearce was a true visionary who foresaw and planned for the rapid growth experienced by RISD during his tenure, during which time he led the district to national prominence. He continued to be involved in his community after his retirement and was a frequent visitor to the school named after him. Pearce High School continues to receive local and national acclaim for the achievements of its students and faculty in areas of academics, athletics and community service.
