Travellers Tales: contributed by Jenni Strachan

Tokyo International Quilt Festival 2016 Landing at 5.30am, on a Monday, to snow and slush, was not our idea of starng 8 days in Tokyo. All the Aussies on our flight were in short sleeves, a"er leaving hot January weather, suitcases were opened at the collecon carousels and winter woollies were quickly pulled out and put on. By that a"ernoon the snow had started to melt and the rest of the week were blue skies and sunshine with a cold wind. The Quilt Fesval was held over a week at the Tokyo Dome, an indoor baseball stadium with the stalls and quilt displays on the field. A"er checking in to our hotel, we did a trial run on the train to make sure I knew where I was going. Extremely easy to find and if all else failed in direcons, it would be just a ma1er of following all the ladies with their handmade quilted bags. I found the Japanese Rail Museum, an hour out of Tokyo, for my husband, so while I was at the fesval, he spent the day there. I decided to a1end on the Saturday as snow was predicted, but didn't eventuate, be1er to spend the day indoors rather than walking around Tokyo as a tourist ge5ng my feet wet. A beauful morning as I lined up with many hundreds of fellow quilters. The majority of these ladies...and men, headed straight for the quilts, I decided to do the stalls working from the back to the front. Did the quilts later. Taupe fabrics were very cheap, Yen 1,000 = $12.50 AUD, paying no more than approx. Yen 200300 for a "large" fat quarter. A roll of various taupe fabrics were Yen 1,000, Old Kimonos, many ladies were buying these to unpick, which gave them several metres of fabric. Lots of handbag pa1erns, old tradional silks, co1ons, some American prints, threads and typical Japanese souvenirs. Beauful scraps of tradional Kimono fabrics, which you had to rummage through large boxes for pieces. Books in Japanese. Handmade paper and several texle stalls, including ceramics. I bought the most amazing packet of ginger biscuits, sorry I didn't buy more. There should have been someone with a sck to prop the mouths closed, the quilts were incredible, jaw dropping. The level of workmanship was stunning.

Hand quilng out of this world, I was in awe of these quilters. The theme to this year was Beatrix Po1er, made by the famous Yoko Saito and her fellow group of quilters. You had to see these pieces to even comprehend the work that had gone into them, Peter Rabbit and all the other characters were represented in fabric, magic is what I would call it. Also displays of tradional quilts, a William Morris exhibion, handmade bags and beauful pieces made by children. The challenge was the theme of "Music", a 6 inch square was made and these were made into quilts for charies, approx 20 large quilts in all. One of the highlights of the fesval day, was bumping into Tanya, Queenie and Julie, whose blogs I follow. They all live in Japan and are close friends. I came around the corner and the three of them were standing there cha5ng. It was so excing to meet them in person. The rest of our week, we visited Asakusa, the Origami Museum, Kite Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum with the largest display of Kimonos, the Cra" and Texle Museum, the Imperial Palace, War Museum, Mt Fuji, Hakone and several Shrines, Temples and gardens. My husband did a Sushi making class at the Fish Market while I re-visited Nippori Fabric Town. Also caught the train to Yokohama Chinatown, where last visit I bought wasabi, chili, apple, oranges and lemon Kit Kats. I have visited Japan in Autumn (2014) and now Winter, with the early showing of some Cherry Blossom trees. I would highly recommend the Tokyo Quilt Fesval. If there is a country that makes you fall in love with it...it's Japan. Common Thread April 2016

A number of Guild Members are very unwell at this ,me especially our secretary Margaret Walker who has resigned due to ill health. APRIL EDITORIAL —JUDY Hello All, Hope you all had a wonderful Easter break. Peter and I got back from our cruise around New Zealand on the 8th March. Leaving Melbourne on the 24th February, visi,ng Auckland, Gisborne, Akaroa, Dunedin and Fiordland. We had a wonderful relaxing ,me on the Golden Princess. At right is me relaxing at Happy Hour, having a special cocktail of the day, which I managed to try every day. I would say it was five star all the way. I am now sold on cruising. We did not get off the ship at every port, choosing to relax for the day on the boat. We did a boat trip around the Auckland Harbour. When arriving in Dunedin, at Port Chalmers, we caught a bus into Dunedin and caught the Taieri Gorge Railway up to Taieri Gorge, as you can see the view at the top was spectacular. On the journey up we crossed a 2 kl bridge that was eleven thousand feet off the ground an amazing structure. In Wellington we caught the old Cable car up the mountain which goes through a rock tunnel to the top of the mountain. Photo on right is the view of the harbor from the botanical gardens. Our last cruising day in NZ was spent in the Fiordland. We cruised in to three fiords Dusky Sound, DoubNul and the last being Milford Sound, which to me was View taken on top of hill the most spectacular. All in all an amazout from Wellington ing relaxing experience. It would be Harbour. lovely to combine this cruise with a Tex,le Art Workshop, Cheers to All plenty of inspira,on to draw Taieri Gorge out of Denedin. A Milford Sound showing the on. spectacular rail journey to get amazing water falls cascading

April Website Report—Jodie www.geelongpatch.org.au Our first emailed newsle0er went out and a few people reported problems with opening the link in the email. This happened because the computer didn’t know that our website and the links contained within it are safe. To avoid this problem you need to tell your browser, email & security program that our site is safe and so are the links open for you. The reason we are emailing the newsle0er as a link instead of as an a0achment is because some peoples’ internet service providers limit the size of files that can be received. At ,mes our newsle0er is too large and will never reach its des,na,on. Don’t forget to check the rosters for Quilt-In and think about volunteering to help out. There are s,ll a lot of spaces to be filled and we cannot do it without you.

WORKSHOP REPORT—Annette Packett Twelve ladies attended the Snowball & NinePatch workshop taught by Annette Packett on Saturday 9 April. The ladies were looked after by Our Workshop Angel Ene who constantly provided them with cups of tea and coffee to sustain them during the workshop. During the morning under Annette’s excellent instruction snowball blocks were constructed, then after lunch the nine patch blocks were constructed. Then the oohs and ahhs began when the blocks were put together. There were several different colour ways chosen by the ladies including batiks and black and white. Thanks to Annette, Ene and the eager participants the workshop was a huge success.

Held at Ballarat Grammar - 30th March to 5th April; by Judy Gordon Meg Pyburne, Kerry Malone, Nicola Picken, Anne0e Packe0 and I all a0ended the Fibre Arts week run by Glenys Mann and her Golden Girls. Anne0e & I did a class with Laura Edgar a tex,le ar,st from UK. My unfinished piece is the sunrise on the le@ & one of Anne0e’s pieces is the moonlight scene [two down on the right] Anne0e also completed a beau, ful scene of the Aireys Lighthouse. The evening piece on the right was done by Shirley Drayton. Looking across the bay to Melbourne from Drysdale in the evening. Our class with Laura was “Impressionistic textile & mixed media collages”. We had a wonderful group of very talented ladies in the class each producing excellent pieces of art. All up there were 19 Tutors in total from the UK, USA, Belgium, New Zealand, and Australia each having approximately twelve students in each class. There was “Discovering colour from the plant world” which Nicola did. “Creative printmaking—Waterless Lithography,” Tessellations in Felt”’ Nunofelting, Print + Book + Wax, which Meg did, completing a quirky book. Textile Creatures that Kerry did.[ The bottom left photo is Kerry’s piece.] There were some wonderful creatures produced in this class. The basketry on the left & right & below was completed in a class called “Sculptural Basketry” run by Mary Hettmansperger from the USA. These pieces were so fine and delicate & very beautiful. The whole five days was a pleasure to a0end and have the opportunity to experience and learn new techniques in a warm & happy place with like minded people. The material on the left is part of the display of Susan Mathews work shop “ Printing Pattern” completed by her students. There were some wonderful patterns produced on various different pieces of material. Catherine O’Leary ‘s class made “Wearable Bojagi”, the blue dress on the right is a piece made by one of her students. The coat on the right was produced in Margo Duke’s class “Tessellations in Felt”. The three felted pieces of clothing were produced in Jan Everett’s clas “ Exploring Organza with Nunofelting”, and the bottom two creatures were produced in Rose Bryony Jennings’ class “Textile Creatures—mixed media sculpture. I thoroughly enjoyed my five days & hope to return to another Fibre Arts in the future.
