HOW NOT TO MAKE A PRIZEWINNING QUILT

A THIRTY-SOMETHING QUILTER TELLS ALL: NOTES ON THE CRAFT FROM A QUILT MAFIA DAUGHTER

Ami Simms 10:30 am

WA1

Mary Fons

$19

Ami Simms is the Erma Bombeck of the quilting world. Join her for an hour of hilarity as she shares her irst attempts at quilt making (and her more recent quilts too). As a newbie she cut on the sewing line, used “Mystery Batting,” and preferred bed sheets to “real” fabric for quilt backings. She created the “Jam and Cram Method" of binding attachment! A late bloomer, she inally did master the art of quilting, but not before creating lots of examples of what NOT to do! She’ll share them all with you in this tongue-in-cheek lecture. Laugh, learn, and feel so much better about your own quilting, no matter what your current skill level is.

1:30 pm

Ami Simms

WE1

$19

In this humorous and inspiring talk, Mary Fons (Quilty, Love of Quilting on PBS), talks about her quilting journey so far, how she learned to quilt on national television, why people will never, ever stop making quilts, and why we need to embrace “the new beginner.” You’ll laugh and you might just cry (it’s been known to happen) but above all else you will be inspired to make your next quilt. That’s a promise.

LIVING WITH QUILTS: A SURVIVAL GUIDE 7 pm

WP1

$19

Learn creative coping strategies for quilters, but not necessarily for their families. Topics include how to pad your house (quilt display and storage), appropriate more studio space (why stop with the spare bedroom?), eliminate pesky distractions (cooking and cleaning), increase storage capacity (batting goes in the oven), and the best way to deal with the guilt of UFOs (ignore it)!

SHIPSHEWANA BARN QUILTS ADORN THE COUNTRYSIDE There’s no better way to experience the culture and 350 S. Van Buren Street, Shipshewana, Indiana 46565 history of rural Northern Indiana than by hitting the road 800-254-8090 • www.VisitLaGrangeCounty.org to travel through the gentle rolling countryside. Colorful quilt-pattern murals adorn historic barns, family homesteads and public spaces.

LAGRANGE COUNTY BARN QUILT TRAIL

Today, the Barn Quilt Trail contributes to telling stories, bringing color and interest to our county’s already beautiful landscape. Twenty- ive quilts have been installed and there are many more that will soon be available to view. The history of the Barn Quilts began nearly 300 years ago in Germany. Most barns were unpainted because of the cost of paint. However, the Pennsylvania Dutch area began to paint and decorate their barns. Decorating the barns with quilt patterns peaked in the early 1830s. Today barn quilts have become popular serving as tours throughout an area. Maps with the barn locations, a little history of the property, patterns of the quilt and sometimes the reason the owner chose that pattern are available at the Visitor’s Center. Many of the symbols used in the designs have special meanings to the families. The Barn Quilts are attached to buildings, barns, shops, garages and even on posts in yards. They vary in size with most measuring either 4′x4′ or 8′x8′.
