It was lovely to see so many fathers at the Father and Daughter Breakfast at Eden Park. This is an opportunity for fathers to spend time with their daughter and to add to memories of that special relationship. One of our Deputy Head Prefects Liziana Fa’asolo brought a tear to many eyes with her singing about that relationship on the morning. The recent Founders Awards Dinner was a wonderful event acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of three more of our Old Girls. These occasions provide an opportunity for our present students to be made aware of the achievements of those who have gone before them who can be role models they can identify with. Read about these people and their achievements in later pages. The success of our Stage Challenge group in once again winning first place is amazing. This event, along with the Korean Evening and Chinese Extravaganza, is student directed and involves large numbers of students across all year levels. The leadership skills involved in organising these events are at a very high level and the creativity and organisational skills demonstrated are very impressive. We are very proud of the senior students who have led others to success and in the process have learned so much about leadership themselves. Successes in many sporting codes are recorded in the following pages and we look forward to achieving even more in the upcoming Winter Tournament Week. One of our Deputy Principals, Ms Fiona Cottam, has recently been appointed Associate Principal at Botany Downs Secondary

Welcome back to School for Term 3.

There was some turmoil in the Term 2 holidays with the proposed overlapping of the Epsom Girls Grammar zone by new enrolment zones to be set up for Selwyn and One Tree Hill Colleges. This proposal was only advised to us near the end of Term 2 and the Board did not have time to be fully appraised of the details of the proposal before the holidays started so we were not able to advise parents in an informed manner. The Board had serious concerns about having the EGGS zone overlapped, and these concerns were voiced by many parents. We arranged a meeting with the Ministry, in conjunction with Auckland Grammar, in the holiday period to hear the detailed plan and reasons for the proposed overlap.

The meeting gave us an

opportunity to voice our concerns not just over the rationale for the overlap but also the process that had been followed. The Board does not have any issue with Selwyn and One Tree Hill Colleges setting up a home enrolment zone but we disputed the thinking that lead to the proposal to overlap the EGGS zone. The Board also expressed significant concerns over the submission process and time constraints imposed. The time constraints meant that we could not adequately consult with parents and other members of the EGGS community, nor could we adequately brief the EGGS community on what our submissions should be. We advised the Ministry of these concerns, which in the time allocated for reply could not be adequately addressed and that the Board would not support the proposed overlap of the EGGS Zone. In the end sense and logic prevailed so that the new zones would not overlap the EGGS zone. The Board wishes to thank the Principal Mrs Gunn and Mrs Wendy Smith the Enrolment Manager, for their hard work over the school holidays to provide the Board with the necessary support and background information required to resolve this issue. We also extend our thanks to all the parents that provided us with their views and / or made submissions directly. The very strong EGGS community opposition to the proposal helped to have it changed. It was great to see a good turn-out for the EGGS Father and Daughter breakfast function, this was an opportunity to celebrate with our daughters the special relationship that we have with them. Thanks to the sponsors of the function and all donations made towards the Sports Centre. The Lady Joyce Fisher Sports Centre is progressing well and nearing completion. We hope to have the second stage commissioned for use by Term 4. The completion of Stage 2 will be a fantastic addition to the sporting and physical educational facilities available to the students at EGGS. Dr Gerald Young - Chair Board of Trustees

We are pleased to announce that the Old Girls Association Epsom House Scholarship for 2015 has been awarded to Georgia Cooper from Drury who will enter Epsom House in Year 9 next year. Georgia’s mother Kirsty Ferguson attended EGGS from 1985 – 1989. The Scholarship is awarded to a new Epsom House student who has a strong connection with the OGA and who we consider will make a real contribution to, and benefit from, being a part of the EGGS community. The Scholarship covers the Development levy and first instalment of the 2015 fees.

Visit to School song writer Virginia Bishop and I recently met with Maureen Hooker, one of the writers of the School song. The song was written during WWII and Maureen had us entranced with stories of life at EGGS during the war years. Miss Loudon, the Principal at the time, had students very involved in the war effort. Maureen remembers drill practice in the trenches dug in ‘Paradise’, knitting khaki wool socks for the soldiers, baking to raise money and having weekly talks in assembly from Miss Loudon about the progress of the war.

2014 Father and Daughter Breakfast

At the recent Junior and Senior Interviews the PTA parents and helpers contributed delicious salads to accompany the staff dinner and help keep the energy levels up of our amazing teachers. The coffee slice deserves a mention and was consumed very quickly! So, a big thank you for all of your culinary efforts and special thanks to the PTA helpers, Epsom House girls and Community Committee girls that assisted on those two nights.

The Father and Daughter Breakfast on the 13th August was a fantastic event with over 200 guests in attendance and I would like to thank Kim

Enrolment for 2015 We are inviting applications for home zone and out of zone places at all year levels. The deadline to submit out of zone applications for the ballot is Wednesday 3 September at 4pm. Home zone applications should be submitted by then also. Application forms must be requested through our website, please click on the following link: http://www.eggs.school.nz/enrolments/request-student-application-form.aspx to complete a request. Within a few minutes, you will receive by email a personalised application form as an attachment. This will be in a PDF interactive format which will allow you to enter details electronically. We encourage you to enter as much information as possible before printing the form.

Out of Zone Places Available places will be allocated in the following priority order: sisters of current students, sisters of past students, daughters of Board of Trustee members and employees, all other applicants. Year 9 and 13: The Board will decide on the number of available places just before the ballots. This will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. Years 10, 11, 12: We will ballot for waiting lists only and any places becoming available will be filled from those lists. The Board expects to decide whether any places are available by November. Please note: We may only offer available out of zone places to sisters if an application has been lodged by the deadline. If you have any questions about enrolment please contact the Enrolment Manager, Mrs Wendy Smith phone 9706710 or by email [email protected]

A useful tool for connecting with our school community is the PTA Facebook page. Please search: Epsom Girls Grammar PTA and “Like” the page so you can easily access the latest news, photos, minutes and meeting times. Finally, to explain the PTA’s function, it is a non-fundraising forum supporting the school community. We help with a multitude of events and from the small donation request made to parents each year, (* please see below) the PTA make contributions to school amenities and also make a contribution to Scholarships. This year donations received so far are $2500 short of last year putting our ability to contribute to the Scholarships in jeopardy so if you haven’t already given, then could you please consider donating a small amount to supporting our girls for their future. Many thanks, Lynley Sheweiry, PTA Chairperson [email protected] or [email protected] * PTA Donation: An annual donation of $30 is suggested which is tax deductible and a receipt will be provided by the school. Payment can be made via internet banking into this account: 02-0100-0380450-00 with reference, “PTA Donation” and Student Surname.

Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop will be closed on Fridays for the remainder of Term 3.

Hip Hop International Champion Georgia May, one of our Year 11 students, has recently been to Las Vegas to compete in the Hip Hop International Championships. Her crew, ID Co Mega Crew, were hugely successful and gained second place in the Mega Crew division. This crew includes some of New Zealand’s best hip hop dancers and Georgia is one of the youngest in the group. This is an outstanding achievement on the world Hip Hop stage – congratulations Georgia!

NCEA News Term 3 is the time when most students will complete the internally assessed components of their programme and it is important that time is managed effectively so that deadlines can be met without stress levels rising. We have encouraged students to discuss their progress to date, and the remaining deadlines ahead, with parents so that you can see the thinking and planning that they are doing in order to gain the results that they are aiming for this year. Subject help is available in a range of areas in lunchtimes and students should not hesitate to take advantage of this. Peer tutoring is also offered by Year 13 students to all students. If you have a particular concern about NCEA please contact your daughter’s Dean, Mr Nowell, the Qualifications Manager, or Mrs Pound, the NZQA Principal’s Nominee. School examinations for Years 11, 12 and 13 students start on Tuesday 9 September and finish on Wednesday 17 September. When a student is not in an exam session they should be revising at home. Students have a sheet of examination instructions and exam procedures have been communicated at year level assemblies. Please make sure that your daughter is sure of the exact time of each of her examinations. Year 11 students, new to NCEA, have also had an assembly on time management and revision strategies. In the Learning Support area of eLearn students can find resources to help them with revision and all senior students are receiving a hard copy of Study Skills strategies. Thanks go to the Learning EGG Leaders who have produced a PowerPoint presentation and video on what Year 13 students have found to be effective study habits and strategies.

CURRICULUM NEWS Mobile App Competition for Girls The Mobile App Competition for Girls is a competition to introduce high school girls to the problemsolving skills that are at the core of computer science, and to encourage girls to consider Computer Science as a career option. This competition was held on a weekend in July, to which Mandira Bulathsinhala, a Year 11 Digital Technology student, was entered. Mandira did not take out a Scholarship, but so impressed the judging panel with her Android app that she was one vote away from winning one of the Scholarships on offer. This is a fantastic achievement and one to be extremely proud of. She has been invited to return to Unitec along with the three winners in November to “teach the teachers” how to use the software she used to create her app. Congratulations Mandira Mandira Bulathsinhala

on your success.

Biology trip to Samoa During the last holiday 34 girls went to Samoa on the inaugural Samoa Medical experience. We had many experiences and visited hospitals, going on ward rounds in both internal medicine and paediatrics. We visited the Cancer Society, old folks home and more. It was a truly eye opening, educational and worthwhile experience for everyone.

Stage Challenge 2014 For the fourth time in five years, EGGS took out the number one spot in the recent Stage Challenge competition.

Up against some strong competitors,

the EGGS team impressed the judges and blew the audience away with their emotional and thoughtprovoking portrayal of the effects addiction can have on a person’s body and mind. Our story followed a young girl (characterised by Grace Stevens) who is lured into the dark world of addiction and then finds herself unable to escape. Her brain is taken over by addiction, a disease that corrupts, destroys and tears apart the delicately crafted boxes that are our mind. Ruby Caradus and Monique Bateman were the outstanding leaders of our 120 student team, all of who put their heart and soul into Stage Challenge and into making this a performance to remember. I am incredibly proud of each and every one of these students – their energy, enthusiasm and commitment is to be commended. The judges described the performance as flawless and gripping, captivating and haunting, and we were awarded close to perfect scores from all three judges – an incredible achievement! A special thanks to all the teachers, parents and students who supported Stage Challenge. This performance could not have happened without you all. Congratulations girls – we did it! Little Art Show This annual event was held on Tuesday 5th August. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to display and sell their artwork. A warm thank you to all of the parents, students and members of the Art community who came along to attend our annual Little Art Show. The evening was a huge success and we are delighted with the money raised through Art sales. 40% of all funds raised go towards the purchase of more art work for around the school.

Chinese Extravaganza This was the 17th annual Chinese Extravaganza held between EGGS and AGS. This year the event was held at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre to sell out audiences on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August, including a Sunday matinee. Vicki Huang and Cindy Qiu were the outstanding leaders of this huge performance. They oversaw all aspects of the organisation, including the performances (each with their own leaders), the publicity, sponsorship, ticket and food sales. The performances were polished and creative and reflected the values of the Chinese community, both modern and traditional. Items included choirs; modern and traditional dance, a band, diabalo, drama and a dragon and lion dance, all MC’ed by the student leaders from EGGS and AGS. Thanks to teachers in charge, Mr Tom Lin, Ms Jan Hawkins, Ms Maggie Lu and Mr Amitesh Chand; Arts & Cultural Coordinator, Ms Jaclyn Druitt; Account Manager, Ms Judy Copas; Theatre Manager, Ms Jo Kelly and all staff who volunteered to supervise Chinese Extravaganza.

Korean Night The numbers and diversity of the Korean Cultural Group and their outstanding performances continue to surprise audiences each year. This year Epsom Girls Grammar again joined together with Auckland Grammar School to hold and perform the 4th annual Korean Night - a student run event showcasing both modern and traditional performances. This was held over two nights on the 29th and 30th July at Auckland Grammar’s Centennial Theatre. Performances included Korean modern dance, Drama, Samulnori and Nanta (traditional drumming), Fan dance, Sogo dance, band and solo performances as well as help from the backstage crew and cooking group. With around 130 members and 10 groups in total, each and every member has spent countless hours of work, endless practises and dedication in bringing together yet another year of outstanding shows, making the nights none other than a huge success. It has been a pleasure being a part of such an amazing cultural aspect of the school and I hope the group continues to flourish in years to come. Lindsey Yoo & Lynn Woo

EPSOM MUSIC August has been Epsom Music’s busiest month so far this year, primarily with our involvement in the KBB Music Festival but also due to Paradisum taking part in the upcoming Big Sing National Finale. There have also been a number of other events happening that have kept everyone on their toes. At the end of last term we took 65 students to Rotorua to perform in the Rhapsody Rotorua Festival. This festival has high school students from all over NZ and Australia take part in a week-long music performance competition and workshop. Our students took part in 3 days of the festival and came away with gold awards for Symphonia, Concert Band and Stage Band, and a Silver award for Chamber Orchestra. This was a great bonding experience and a fantastic preparation for the KBB Music Festival. Our bands and orchestras have their most important month of the music year in August with the schools KBB Music Festival. They have been working very hard preparing for the festival and have been showcasing their repertoire for the school community through assembly performances and the recent Band and Orchestra Showcase. Thanks to all those who came along to support our students. This year we had six groups performing at the KBB Music Festival which was held at Westlake Boys and Girls High Schools. Our groups performed extremely well and came away with Silver awards for Symphonia and Stage Band and Bronze awards for Chamber Orchestra and Concert Band. Symphonia was selected from 160 groups to present the “Chairman’s Command Performance” at the Gala Concert on Sunday evening. We also had 20 students from Epsom selected to take part in the KBB MF Honours Orchestra and Concert Band. Well done girls, we are all very proud of you.

Cycling

On the 7th, 8th and 9th July 20 Epsom cyclists competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Cycling. The girls began racing on Saturday morning with the team time trial. Our Senior A came away with 8th and the Junior A 7th place. To finish off a great day of racing all the girls competed in the road race. This was a hilly course, which some girls enjoyed more than others. In the U13 girls race Stella Nightingale came away with 8th place. Ruby Sullivan was the best placed U16 rider in 11th and in the U19 girls Grace Anderson came away with 2nd. Staying together at North Islands was a new experience for the girls this year but one I can say they all enjoyed. Day 2 consisted of the Criterium and the beginning of the Track racing. Milly Maling fought hard in the sprint and came away with a well deserved 5th followed closely behind by Grace Masterson in 8th place. In the U19 girls Abby Parker came away with 9th. Ten girls then stayed on to race at the new Avantidrome. This was a great opportunity for all the girls to be able to race on the indoor track. Our Junior A team came 2nd in the team pursuit and the Junior B came 3rd. The Junior A team consisted of Ruby Sullivan, Mindy Ryan-Kidd and Milly Maling and the Junior B team consisted of 2014 North Island Junior A TTT

Niamh Kane, Lucy Brown and Katie Holden. Monday was the last day of racing at North Islands and all the gave it their best shot. Milly Maling managed to hold on till the end in

the elimination race to come away with 3rd place. All the girls had a great weekend at North Islands filled with lots of fun and some great results. Grace Anderson - Cycling Captain

Table Tennis

Every Friday afternoons, 32 EGGS girls play games against various secondary schools at the Auckland Table Tennis Stadium. The girls have played extremely well and came away with fantastic results during Term 2. In the C2 grade, EGGS Team 6 earned themselves second place with the team consisting the students, Kahee Cook, Jina Woo, Elvira Yang and Catherine Yao. EGGS Team 1 also came 2nd place with a team consisting of Doris Zhang, Kayum Chong and Jessica Liu. This outstanding result in their B grade qualified Team 1 an entry in the Girls Champions of Championship held at North Harbour Stadium. Other teams that also qualified came from Westlake and St. Cuths who were equally as skilful, proving to be tough competition against EGGS. Despite being unable to achieve the results they wanted, the girls thoroughly enjoyed playing against the other teams. Term 3’s inter-school league is now under away and we hope to see more great results from our girls!
