DPF PRESSURE PIPES What is a DPF Pressure Pipe?

Range

A DPF Pressure Pipe is a metal tube which connects the DPF unit to a DPF pressure sensor. This allows the sensors to accurately measure the inlet and outlet pressures of the DPF. As the amount of particulate trapped by the DPF increases, the pressure at the inlet side of the DPF increases in comparison to the DPF outlet. This comparison is used by the sensor to calculate the amount of particulate trapped within the DPF. By measuring this pressure and the DPF temperature, the DPF software can determine if the DPF is becoming blocked and requires regeneration. There are two variants of a Pressure Pipe – fixed (welded into, and supplied with the DPF unit) and detachable (screw in, and supplied separately).

BM Catalysts’ DPF Pressure Pipe range has come to fruition as we believe new pipes should be fitted with a replacement DPF on all occasions. We also recognise that in some cases there is a need for DPF Pressure Pipes without requiring the DPF itself. When fitting a DPF, it is recommended to also offer Pressure Pipes as a supplementary product in case of damage to the existing ones. Our Pressure Pipes are products in their own right, and can be sold on their own. It is worth noting that Pressure Pipes cannot be purchased without a DPF when buying as O.E.

This issue, TRW’s Automotive Aftermarket’s Technical & Training Manager discusses best practice when replacing brake pads. TRW’s range of brake pads featuring COTEC and DTEC, are engineered to give maximum performance with no noise or squeal. All our pads feature COTEC, a unique coating to the friction material that improves the friction coefficient in the first few applications, resulting in shorter stopping distances, by up to 7 metres, and safer driving for your customers when they leave your workshop. DTEC technology reduces dust by up to 45%, without any loss of performance, a must for cars with expensive alloy wheels.

Brake Judder With brake discs, if the disc is faulty due to manufacture, and is going to cause brake judder this will manifest itself within the first few hundred miles or about a month at the most. Brake judder is caused by Disc Thickness Variation (DTV), and it is extremely rare for a brand new disc to exhibit this. Modern manufacturing and machining techniques have virtually eliminated this. The common misconception is that warping causes brake judder. Not absolutely true. A brake disc can have run-out of up to 0.15mm, once fitted, whereas for DTV the limit is 0.015mm. It’s the thickness variation that causes the pads to pulsate in the caliper, and hence judder under braking.

TRW COTEC Brake Pads

All TRW pads feature shims on the back of the brake pad and these are specifically designed to eliminate noise and on our DTEC range. The fact is all brake pads make noise. It’s what we do to eliminate or reduce the noise the counts. At TRW we go to extreme measures with shim design to eliminate noise. When installing brake pads, never cover the shim with grease, and especially copper grease. Only a small amount of grease should be applied to the areas of the backing plate that are in contact with the slider/guide pins, to ensure free movement. Covering the back of the back plate will simply increase the risk of noise, by destroying the properties of the shim. Also the grease acts as a medium for catching all the dust, which in turn leads to premature wear and failure. It’s also worth noting; TRW pads all their springs are made of stainless steel, so don’t need grease. N.B. This effect will also apply to aluminium wheels. Using copper grease when fixing the wheel to the hub will make it even harder to remove next time! Please remember – too much grease is worse than no grease at all!!

If the judder occurs after several months, then something else, such as a sticking caliper or incorrect fitment to the hub, has led to the disc developing DTV. The latter is usually the culprit! When fitting new discs, please ensure the hub face is absolutely clean. Even the smallest amount of rust, just 0.0015mm, dirt or a burr can cause disc run-out greater 0.15mm, which will be enough over time to result in brake judder. The other factor that can cause excessive runout when fitting new discs is the use of too much copper grease. By the very nature of the product it contains small particles of copper, and if too much grease is applied, this can again lead to excessive run-out. Remember, it is not possible to see run-out of 0.15mm with the naked eye. It has to be measured. Follow these simple, common sense instructions and you will eliminate most cases of brake judder.
