WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 The time has arrived for Sarasota and Manatee Counties to submit a bid on the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park. If awarded the games, the two‐county area would represent the United States (Previous games held in U.S. in 1995 in Indianapolis). Hosting the 2017 Championships will no doubt put our region on the world stage, and will bring the most prestigious and highest economic demographics in international sports. Based upon the attendance at the 2012 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, we can expect 42,000 attendees with 1,213 athletes from over 62 nations and 973 coaches and officials. There will be 40,000 room nights generated, with teams arriving at least 8 days in advance of the competition. According to Dr. Walter Klages of Research Data Services, such attendance if held in Sarasota/Manatee Counties today would generate $12,970,000 of direct spending by athletes, coaches, officials and attendees with a total economic impact to the region of some $24,615,000. Hosting the 2017 Games would also allow us to host another significant rowing event in 2016, which will prepare our community for the World Rowing Championship in 2017. Beyond this World Championship event, Nathan Benderson Park would gain credibility and notoriety to host future rowing, kayak, canoeing, triathlons, dragon boats, wake‐boarding, that will create a much needed revenue stream for our community. There is also the expectation for Olympic Rowing Teams to train in advance of the 2016 games at not only Nathan Benderson Park but also at Ft. Hamer Training Center in Parrish. It is extremely important that we look at this investment as a venue branding opportunity and the long‐ term impact the aquatic center (Nathan Benderson Park) will provide to our community. It is also important to acknowledge the 20 million dollar investment that Sarasota invested in the aquatic center (tourist development dollars) and an additional $5 million from the State of Florida, by which these capital investments confirm a strong commitment, realizing the value it brings to not only our two‐ county area, but to the State of Florida as well. Both communities have also preached the importance of regionalism, and there is no better time than now to showcase a regional partnership, a partnership that can truly and effectively impact our hospitality industry, job creation, future real estate transactions, new business opportunities, and increase sales revenue that will ultimately enhance our quality of life in our community. This is the kind of domino effect that many communities seek, but don’t have the unique assets like ours to fulfill those needs. With this unique commitment, the investment will return to us in the way of many future opportunities, while at the same time, showcasing our abilities to effectively partner with our neighbors that will hopefully build upon future partnerships between the two counties. With this event representing the

U.S., we will seek monetary support from the State of Florida and national grant opportunities and corporate sponsorships so that we can reduce our financial liability. The time is now for all of us to step up and partner like never before so that we can grab onto this opportunity, an opportunity that will benefit both communities for many years to come. Let us all be a part of something special. Additional background information: • All budgeted monies for this bid process are being split equally by the Bradenton Area CVB and the Visit Sarasota CVB. • Nathan Benderson Park is owned by Sarasota County government, and is functioning as a multi‐ purpose aquatic center and community park.
• Over the past three years, Sarasota County Government has already budgeted $250,000 to facilitate regattas at Nathan Benderson Park. • Two years ago, Sarasota County utilized a percentage of the 5 th penny tourism tax to finance the horizontal infrastructure and expansion of the lake to meet World Championship standards for rowing events. Project budget: $20,000,000 • The State of Florida, during last year’s session, granted Sarasota County $5,000,000 for horizontal infrastructure, to include a wave attinuator system (limits waves on the lake for competitive fairness). • Manatee County Government is providing a great deal of sweat equity for logistical requirements over the next several years. • The host communities will be branded Sarasota‐Bradenton , with all brand elements being showcased in the marketplace throughout the next 4+ years. • This event will not only bring athletes and coaches world‐wide, but will also bring a high demographic corporate clientele, former rowers from top universities/colleges will want to support rowing in the U.S. by hosting alumni parties/gatherings during the World Championships. This clientele are likely to stay at our island properties. • Throughout this 4.5 year program, all other tourism‐related marketing and promotional programs will not be compromised due to budget stabilization and a healthy reserve account.
