Life is a journey, one of constant choices. It is a gift for us to embrace and reap rewards, or disregard and then regret in years to come. I have been tremendously blessed during this long journey with family, school friends, and strangers who have helped me along the way. My rewards come frequently in children returning as adults to say “Hello” or to bring their children to that “little school in the country”. Ted always said, “No one comes to the Double R by chance! It was meant to be.” So, I thank you for being part of my journey. Going on 77 years of happiness, and I wouldn’t change one thing. Merry Christmas and many heart-felt blessings, for all of us Love, Mrs. Reichle

To all students, staff, and parents of the Double R I want to thank you all for the cards, phone calls, and support through the loss of Mr. Reichle. My dad was an amazing man! He put so much work, time, and love into this school; it was his life. Mrs. Reichle (Mom), Kevin, and I will do our best to continue this vision. We are blessed to have an outstanding staff that has been with us through the years, and we can’t thank them enough. I wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND JOYOUS holiday season. Ms. Allison

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year I hope all of our students, faculty, and staff have a safe and happy holiday season. Your support of the Double R is greatly appreciated. It was wonderful to see so many of our current and former families at Mr. Ted’s Celebration of Life in November. The sadness of his passing is real, but so are the great memories we’ve shared that were brought together by Ted and Brenda Reichle’s vision for our children. We are proud of all of all our Double R students’ accomplishments and contributions to our world, and we are confident that our current students will proudly carry forth the Double R legacy of “Knowledge, Self-Esteem, and Citizenship”. May the Blessings of the Season be with you. Kevin Dunne

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, This is the time of year children look for the fun and festivity of the season (and the presents) and most of us grownups reflect on our families, our lives, the year behind and the year ahead. For all of us, recent times have caused perhaps hardship and at the very least, stress, and anxiety. For all the gloom and doom of the times, let us not overlook the people and things that give us JOY. Joy encompasses happiness, contentment, love, pleasure, delight, felicity, bliss, and rapture. It is a small word that embodies all that we, as frail humans, strive to achieve. Our words and actions can reflect the joy in our hearts not just during the Christmas season but all year long. Make every holiday memorable and full of JOY! We will all miss Mr. Reichle, friends, family, faculty, and students. Good-bye Mr. Reichle. Trudie O. Fluharty

We asked the VPK 2s, “What color is Rudolph’s nose?” Here is what they said: Sandra Balcaitis: red Emily Ragsdale: red Everett Ford: green and yellow Colton Jones: green Kamden Loos : green Veronica White: red Dante Dicarolis: blue Jackson Sanchez: red Parker Humphrey: red

We love our soldiers, and we also love to show it! The whole middle school likes to make cards or write letters to our soldiers. They sometimes write back! Cards are just something that is not hard and makes them feel special. This year Mrs. DeLuca encouraged the Middle Schoolers to make cards which she then sent to our soldiers. A great big “Thanks” to Mrs. DeLuca and all students who participated. by: Alexis Hosack

The Association of Independent Schools of Florida, AISF, is the accreditation body that establishes safety standards and guidelines for private schools throughout Florida. The Association enables schools to increase the learning abilities of students enrolled in accredited schools. The Double R has been accredited through this organization since 1998. by: Connor Messenger

Once again this year, Double R families are donating “Turkey Bucks” as well as nonperishable food. The money is used to purchase turkeys. The DRV collects the donated food from each classroom and puts together enough delicious meals for families throughout the community that are less fortunate than we are. In this way families will have a nice Thanksgiving Dinner. A big “Thank You” to all the families that donated “bucks” and food stuff so that others might have a delightful Thanksgiving. by: Zoie Blair

Double R tests students’ skills learned during the year through the Terra Nova battery of tests. Each year the test is administered in late spring around Spring Break. Many of our students do extremely well. Watch the monthly Newsletter next spring for more information. by: Albert Marshall

It is said that the road between Chuluota and Snow Hill is haunted by a pair of ghostly lights. The lights have been around for over fifty years and are now called the ‘Oviedo Lights.’ However, some people say that the road is haunted by ghosts. According to them, people died or went missing on this road and their ghosts are the lights traveling the road over and over again. However, the only proven death on this road was a fatal car accident when a driver did not have his headlights on during the night. Many teenagers in the 1960s and 1970s sat in their cars around this road waiting to see the famous Oviedo Lights. It doesn’t happen as much anymore, and some claim it is merely a hoax. Some people speculate that the lights are a result of swamp gas rising into the air and becoming visible on the road. Whatever the source of the Oviedo Lights, they will stay as a memory to those who saw it. by: Daniel Sutch

Snap! Snap! Snap! Be on the lookout for Mrs. Cathyann, our camera sleuth, taking pictures throughout the campus! I have a great feeling that the 2016 yearbook is going to be super with the awesome pictures Mrs. Cathyann takes. The cost of this year’s yearbook is $25.00 for one and $45.00 for two! Be sure to order your yearbook soon! A great big “Thanks” to Mrs. Cathyann for all of her hard work compiling this annual book. by: Sydney Diaz

To celebrate the graduation of our wonderful eighth graders, Double R and Dr. VanGilder treat them to dinner, usually at Outback. Everyone has a great meal and a lot of fun. P.S. Thank you, Double R and Dr. VanGilder! by: Alexis Hosack

There are two different types of “bee’s” at Double R. There is the Spelling Bee and the Geography Bee. For the Spelling Bee, students are given a list of increasing difficult words to study. There is a “spell off” in the fourth through eighth grade class rooms until we have ten students to compete in the “spell off” in the gym. The lucky winner gets to take a spelling test and travel to Tallahassee to represent the school. The same procedure is followed to select a student to represent Double R at the Geography Bee. Watch the monthly “Newsletter” for the exact dates for each bee.

In the fall and again in the spring, Double R students swim for P.E. Sometimes, the students swim laps while other times they get to play games. When it starts to get cool and we can’t swim anymore, we play basketball, Capture the Flag, soccer, and other active games. After swim season, we do push-ups, pull-ups, shuttle run, the mile run, sit-ups, etc. to get ready for the physical fitness test in the spring. At graduation students get awards for physical education and ability. Awards are also given for individuals who do well on the Presidential Tests. When it warms up in the spring, we go swimming again. by: Alexis Hosack

Happy Thanksgiving! On Wednesday, November 26, Double R held its Thanksgiving Feast. The students prepared the annual banquet that featured “Friendship Stew”. Each year the Middle School holds socials in the gym. Middle schoolers and their friends are invited to a night of fun and snacks. We held a Halloween Social in October, and everyone who attended had a blast. We danced, played games, and snacked. There was a spooky “Haunted House” complete with “smog” as you entered the gym. The eighth grade did a marvelous job decorating and conducting the games and dances. We are planning another in February for Valentine’s Day when we dress up and one in May as we prepare for the summer break. The cost is only $10.00 for an evening of fun, dance, and food. Watch the monthly Newsletter for the exact dates of the upcoming socials. See you there! by: Albert Marshall

Tutoring at Double R gives children a chance to get better at their subjects. Some children might need tutoring for subjects like math or language arts. The tutors at Double R are very experienced and quite helpful. One extraordinary teacher has guided me to great success in math. My math grade has been increased to an A+ because I’ve always had someone to offer me that little extra “push.” If you are interested in tutoring for your student, please contact the office. by: Frank Salgado

School is out! It’s summer time! Come to Double R to sign up for summer camp. There is also summer school. It is fun. There are swim lessons, games, sports, and fun crafts. Make sure to bring your swim suit. Have a great summer! We hope to see you at Camp Eagle. by: Zoie Blair

For the last week before Christmas break, Middle Schoolers get their “holly jolly” on. All week we play SECRET SANTA and bring dollar gifts for the stockings hanging on the wall in Language Arts. On Friday, the last day of school before break, we usually have a Christmas Party, which is really fun. Everyone contributes to the “feast” by bringing all sorts of delicious sweets and desserts and wonderful drinks. Before we eat, we play a game called CHINESE GIFT EXCHANGE where everyone brings a $5 or more item for under the tree. We select or exchange gifts until there are no more under the tree, then we munch on the snacks and drinks until it is time to go home to start our two week long BREAK!!!!!. Happy Holidays everyone; see you next year. by: Frank Salgado

Every year the seventh grade reads The Diary of Anne Frank, the stage adaptation of her diary by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and “A Tragedy Revealed: A Heroine’s Last Days” written by Ernst Schnabel. After reading the play and the essay, the seventh and eighth grades visit the Holocaust Memorial which commemorates the tragedy of the Holocaust, a very sad time in World History. The children learn that although it was a horrible time, there were good people who tried to help others. by: Angela Chevalleau

The McKay Scholarship provides over 30,000 Florida students with special needs the opportunity to attend a participating private school of his or her choice. This is a scholarship that allows the parents of students with disabilities to choose the best educational setting in a public or private school for their child. The MacKay Scholarship, Students With Disabilities Program, was enacted and launched in 1999. It became the nation’s first school voucher program for students with special needs. It is interesting that approximately thirteen percent of students throughout Florida are eligible for this program. by: Frank Salgado

Our students get to visit all kinds of places throughout the year. This year the VPK children visited Publix on September 23 and 24 and got to see “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” on November 17 just in time for Christmas. In January, 2016, they will be going to see “Mr. Owl.” In April they will be going to the zoo and to the “Crayola Experience”. Kindergarteners went to the Police/Fire Station in October and will be going to the Planetarium next year. In September our first graders went to the Police/Fire Station and to the Orlando REP to see Fancy Nancy. In January the second grade will be going to a ranch. Wonder if they will be mucking stalls or riding horses? In April they will be going to the Orlando REP to see Fancy Nancy. The fourth grade went to a corn maze in October, and third and fourth grades will be going to Fort Christmas next February. Sounds like lots of fun for the little ones here at Double R. by Clarissa Avila

On Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5, The Double R Players performed Ho! Ho! Ho! The Santa Claus Chronicles written by Pat Cook. The play was about how things worked around the North Pole. We learned who keeps the reindeer healthy for the big night and what people actually think about Santa. Most importantly, we learned where Mrs. Claus disappeared to find birthday presents for Santa’s big surprise party. Poor Santa was so surprised that he forgot his lines and called himself “Snuggle Bunny,” Mrs. Santa’s “pet nickname” for him. His reaction when he realized his mistake made the audience laugh even louder. The entire cast did a wonderful job both nights. Our next play is going to be about pirates. Don’t forget to try out for the spring play. Watch the monthly Newsletter for the auditions which will be in January. by: Cecilia Medina-Fernandez

The Kids Abroad program began in 1978. Students have had the opportunity to visit fourteen different countries. Last year, we visited Iceland. In May 2016, we will be going to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Students are guided by Kevin Dunne, Allison Dunne, or Mrs. Reichle. They stay in youth hostels, hotels, and cottages. Students eat local foods, attend some classes, and visit American Embassies, along with guided tours of places they have studied in school. Kids Abroad brings history to life. Traveling becomes a lasting memory. Experiencing the world is a treasure and lessons learned can be applied throughout a life’s journey. Come Join Us! by: Mrs. Reichle

The Double R Volunteers, DRV, is a group of kids in Middle School who, with the help of teachers, locate needy charities which we try to assist. Students at Double R pitch in to perform fundraisers to collect money for those charities. We have been very successful over the years that DRV has been in existence. Recently we raised almost $125.00 for a charity in India that helps educate, feed, and cloth Indian kids. We are also sponsoring another fundraiser to collect broken crayons which will be melted down and made into new crayons for children in hospitals. Next year, in 2016, we will also be doing another fundraiser for either an animal shelter or for the homeless. by: Clarissa Avila
