BACKGROUND The University of Manchester The University became the largest single site University in the UK in 2004 with the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). By 2015, The University of Manchester aims to hold a world-class leading research profile and be among the top 25 universities in the world. The core commitment of the research strategy is to perform research of the highest quality and to continue to raise the level and ambition of our world class and world leading standards of excellence. In RAE 2008, The University of Manchester was rated third in the UK in terms of ‘research power.’ 65% of the University’s research activity, amounting to 1,194 full-time equivalent staff was judged to be 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*), putting us among only a handful of universities with an internationally significant research profile over a wide range of subject areas. As part of our strategy and vision for the University, we are working to build a 21st century campus with cutting-edge research accommodation and facilities. In the last few years we have spent more than £400m on transforming our campus and building a world-class environment for outstanding scholars, teachers and internationally acclaimed research teams. This is the largest investment ever seen in UK higher education history. A further £250m investment by 2015 will bring the total spend to more than £650m. The University boasts the world famous Jodrell Bank Observatory, the Graphene Institute, the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, the Photon Science Institute, and the recently-opened Integrative Centre for Molecular Cell Biology. The John Rylands University Library is one of the World's greatest research libraries and holds more than four million printed books, some 40,000 e-journals, 500,000 e-books, several hundred databases, and many special and rare collections. Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences has approximately 9,000 full- and part time students registered on undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes. It has 1,600 academic and research staff and annual research income of over £50 million. The Faculty comprises the Manchester Medical School and the Schools of Dentistry; Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work; Manchester Pharmacy School; and Psychological Sciences. Within the Schools, research staff are aligned with Institutes (Cancer, Inflammation and Repair, Cardiovascular, Population Health, Human Development, and Brain Behaviour and Mental Health) that reflect the strategic priorities of the Faculty.

The Faculty’s goal for 2015 is to be a world leader in the translation of key elements of biomedical research to patient care, working in collaboration with the NHS and industrial partners. The Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC http://www.mahsc.ac.uk/) is a partnership of the six NHS organisations in Manchester and the University. It was formally established in July 2008 with the overarching strategy to integrate Manchester’s research activity within the University and Hospital Trusts in order to generate health benefits, economic development, enterprise, innovation and wealth creation in Greater Manchester and the wider North West. The ultimate aim is to make MAHSC a leading global centre for the delivery of innovative, applied health research and education into healthcare. Manchester Pharmacy School The Manchester Pharmacy School (MPS) at the University of Manchester, is one of the UK leading centres for research with 95% of its work classed as internationally significant in the latest national assessment of research in UK universities (RAE 2008). MPS is located in the renovated Stopford Building on Oxford Road. The Head of the School is Professor Kay Marshall. Further information can be found on the school website at http://www.pharmacy.manchester.ac.uk/ The Manchester Pharmacy School dedicates itself to research on medicines, aiming to improve aspects of their design, development and use, as well as research covering the practice of pharmacy and the delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients and consumers. This is being advanced within a number of strategic research themes which encompass both the science and practice of pharmacy. Research within the MPS is funded by the Research Councils, Charities, EU, DoH/NIHR and Industry. A recent highlight is the establishment of the AstraZeneca-funded (£1.5m) Modelling and Simulation Centre. MPS also delivers a four-year MPharm degree programme leading to a professional qualification in pharmacy, and a number of post-graduate courses, including the Pharmaceutical Industry Advanced Training programme (PIAT) and Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assuirance (PTQA) programme, the School also hosts the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE).
