ACADEMIC PEDIGREE We attract the highest calibre researchers and teachers, boasting 25 Nobel Prize winners among current and former staff and students. We have more Nobel laureates on our staff than any other UK university – Andre Geim, Kostya Novoselov (both Physics) and John Sulston (Physiology or Medicine) – and we’re led by our President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell FRS, whose research has advanced understanding and treatment of brain damage in stroke and head injury. ENTERPRISE AND INNOVATION Our history of intellectual property (IP) commercialisation spans more than 20 years, during which time we’ve generated more than 100 spin-out companies. We introduce entrepreneurs and investment to our ground-breaking inventions and software via our innovation group, UMI3. In the last nine years venture funders have invested £225 million in our spin-outs, a number of which have received national and regional enterprise awards. In addition, 165 proof-of-principle (PoP) IP projects have been initiated and managed. Europe’s largest dedicated university spin-out seed fund (the UMIP Premier Fund) was established here in 2008 with a value of £31.5 million. It has invested in 12 spinout companies and 26 PoP projects, and has established a novel £5 million PoP arrangement with the IP Group to support projects for its second investment phase. We’ve extended our spin-out services to staff interested in social enterprise and to students active in digital and social media projects. We received the Outstanding HEI Supporting Social Entrepreneurship Award from UnLtd and HEFCE in 2013 in recognition of our work in this area. FACTS AND FIGURES 2014

CAMPUS INVESTMENT We have invested more than £750 million since 2004 in state-of-the-art buildings, contemporary refurbishments and public realm works, transforming our campus and the surrounding area. Our campus masterplan will see us investing a further £1 billion by 2022.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Social responsibility describes the way we are making a difference to the social and economic well-being of our communities through our teaching, research and public events and activities. Here is just a snapshot of the impact we are making. • We’ve generated 21,640 jobs in the north-west (18,474 in Manchester, equivalent to 6% of all jobs). • We’ve helped 1,016 people into work through our employment initiative, The Works, bringing £16.1 million a year in savings to the economy. • 1,143 students on our Manchester Leadership Programme created £266,611 of economic value from volunteering activity in our local community. • 125 of our staff support schools as governors – more than any other campus-based university – generating £825,000 of economic value. • As part of our plan for sustainable travel, we’ve installed 1,000 bicycle stands, 18 shelters and 50 shower facilities on campus.

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS Explore a universe of amazing ideas at our inspirational visitor attractions. Whitworth Art Gallery Our art gallery reopens in autumn 2014, following £12 million of development and expansion. The Whitworth, home to more than 55,000 works of art, ranging from textiles to some of the most famous British watercolours, will be transformed, becoming an engaging and 21st-century space with a greater connection to the surrounding parkland.

Manchester Museum Our Ancient Worlds galleries bring to life the great civilisations of Egypt, Rome and Greece. Our Egyptology collection is one of the largest in the UK, with around 16,000 objects from 10,000 BC to the Byzantine era.

The John Rylands Library Our Grade I-listed, neo-Gothic John Rylands Library houses 250,000 printed volumes and more than a million archival items.

Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre As well as being home to the 76-metre-wide Lovell Telescope, Jodrell Bank welcomes thousands of music lovers each summer for its spectacular Transmissions series of concerts.
