ear Friends

It is a special pleasure to greet you at the Tenth Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival. We have good reason to celebrate. Ten years ago, how could we have dared hope that out of such tentative beginnings would develop a Festival so central not just to the musical life of Jerusalem and, indeed, of Israel, but which has grown into an internationally acclaimed event. We are delighted to welcome artists who have performed with us from the very first Festival and whom it is a joy to see here each year, as well as new faces who we hope will become an integral part of the Festival family. And, of course, our unique public which, from the very beginning, has supported us and shared with us the joy of music-making in Jerusalem. This year, the rich, wide-ranging programme is based on a central theme, the late styles of composers ranging from Bach to our day. Virtually every work in the Festival was written late in the composer’s life, and demonstrates the distinctive characteristics that mark these late compositions. We are proud, too, that the Festival continues to contribute to the contemporary chamber music repertoire by commissioning new music. This year, two works have been specially commissioned: a quintet by Israeli composer Avner Dorman and a piano trio by Christian Jost. We look forward to celebrating together two weeks of wonderful music.
