WHY TRAVEL WITH B&R? B&R has been in France for—well, forever, basically. And when you know a country as well as we know this one, opportunities for innovation abound. That’s why we’re

Among those in the know, the Ile d’Oléron and Ile de Ré are the most famous and fashionable islands along the French Atlantic Coast, nestled secretly between Brittany to the north and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south. From our rendezvous in the medieval harbour city of La Rochelle, with its two imposing towers, we’ll take you for an unforgettable journey of wonderfully flat biking along the sea, picnicking on sailboats and tasting oysters at one of the most well-preserved producer’s villages of the region. B&R is proud to be the first and only active travel company to offer you the opportunity to be in the vanguard and experience this unique itinerary.

thrilled to be the first active travel company to depart from the Charentes Maritime region, a hidden gem, and sail to three unique French jewels: the islands of Oleron, Aix, and Re.

the journey _____________

Days 1 & 2 Oléron Island WELCOME TO THE REGION KNOWN AS LA CHARENTES Maritime! Your B&R guides will meet with you at our rendezvous hotel in La Rochelle. After an hour and a half ’s drive south, we’ll cross the causeway that links the continent to our first island: the Ile d’Oléron. Our warmup ride begins across from the forest of Le Vert Bois, heading west along the oyster fields and farms of the bay. Via bike paths and quiet lanes we’ll arrive in Le Château d’Oléron and finally Le Grand Village in time for lunch at the bistro “Le Relais des Salines.” Here, Chef James Robert—himself an oyster farmer—will demonstrate for us his personal philosophy of cooking grilled fish. In the HOTEL

Le Grand Large, Dolus d’Oléron Built in 1965, the hotel Le Grand Large has found its place in a natural way in the middle of the dunes and the beach of La Remigeasse. With Le Corbusier’s style and its exposure to the southwest, it’s a very luminous and comfortable place to relax. This elegant and modern hotel associates comfort with highquality, designer furniture and a soft and chic atmosphere.

THE ACTIVITY

Day 1: An approx. 36 km (23 mi.) warm-up ride passing by oyster beds and salt flats. Half the ride is seaside, via Dolus d’Oléron, Le Château, and Le Grand Village. The terrain is completely flat.

Day 2: An approx. 57 km (35 mi.) flat ride along bike paths and quiet roads via pine forests and evocative marinas. This loop takes us to the Central part of the Island and to the beautiful Fort Royer. A longer option is available in the morning, riding up to the windy northern point of the island to the Phare de Chassiron for a total of approx. 46 km (28 mi.).

afternoon it’s a short stretch towards the protected sand beaches of La Rémigeasse, along which we’ll find our first hotel. There will be time to venture a dip into the Atlantic along the private beach before we enjoy a glass of Champagne accompanied by a tasting of oysters by Videau, one of the best producers of Marennes-Oléron as an aperitif. We’ll dine in at the hotel’s restaurant, renowned locally for its gourmet creativity. The following morning we head to the north part of the island, passing through remarkable and surprising landscapes in the centre of the island, past the dunes and beaches and through little fishing villages and pine forests of the commune of Saint-Georges-d’Oléron before arriving at the marina of Boyardville. Our destination, before lunch on your own in Oléron’s main village of Saint Pierre d’Oleron, is the most well-preserved oyster producer’s village: Fort Royer. Here, we’ll learn how to make what many French Chefs consider the best oysters in the world! Back at the hotel, later this afternoon, take some time to rest and relax by the beach or pool before meeting for dinner. Tonight, in the spectacular dining room of Le Grand Large, we are welcomed with a surprise: platters and platters of fresh seafood sourced metres away from La Cotinière, the fishing port we rode through earlier in the day!

the second leg of our gentle cruise. We’ll reach the harbour of Saint-Martin de Ré three sailing hours later and disembark right in front of our hotel. Tonight, we’ll walk to dinner at the favourite local bistro, la Baleine Bleue for a rewarding dinner. *The tide is a very important factor of local life and plays no less important a role in our journey. As a result, the timing and flow of the day may change accordingly.

_____________

Days 3, 4 & 5 Ile d’Aix to Ile de Ré This morning brings with it a real treat: a private catamaran cruise across the sheltered waters of the Bay of Biscay to Île de Ré. But first, we’ll leave on our bikes for a exhilarating route to the village of Saint Denis d’Oléron, glimpsing on the way the curious sight of Fort Boyard, a fortress that appears to float on water. Built to guard the entrance to the bay, by the time it was completed in the early 19thC modern weaponry had already rendered it useless—so it was converted to a prison and, in recent times, a film and television set. An hour or two later, stop en route for a short bike ride or a walk on Ile d’Aix. Situated in the middle of the bay, this natural formation and National Park offers an exceptional environment for a short ride through shaded forests and past secluded coves. Later, we re-board Skipper Bernard’s boat, and enjoy a great picnic during

After breakfast the next day, head out to discover the south of the Ile de Ré with sea views at every turn and vineyards throughout. The whole area is protected and we’ll spend the morning riding along beautiful flat bike paths. Being on a bike on the Ile de Ré is being part of local life! Finish up our morning loop in time for a great picnic at a superb location, by the pool of our hotel’s sister property, the Villa Clarisse. This afternoon offers some downtime to enjoy the hotel’s excellent pool or to discover the bustling village of St Martin de Ré. HOTEL

Hotel Le Toiras, St Martin de Ré Relais & Chateaux The Hôtel de Toiras is exceptionally well located at the entrance to the port of Saint Martin de Ré, the historical capital of the Île de Ré. The façades, typical of the old Île de Ré residences subjected to the forces of the Atlantic Ocean for nearly four centuries, make the hotel an integral part of the activities and life of this harbour town, endowing it with great natural charm.

THE BIKING

Day 3: An approx. 26 km (20 mi.) flat ride along bike paths on Oléron and/or Ré depending on tide, plus a 7 km (4 mi.) gentle bike ride or walk on Aix.

Day 4: Approx. 30 km (22 mi.) A stunning seaside ride along bike paths via typical villages such as La Flotte, Sainte-Marie de Ré and le Bois-Plage.

Day 5: 44 km (27 mi.) All flat along the water following the ancient Route du Sel (Salt Route). There are several options today, ranging from 22 km (14 mi.) to the almost B&R century

ride, an approx. 90 km (55 mi.) ride that circles the entire island.

Atlantic France Biking 2015 The Journey

Tonight, we’ll meet with our local expert, Maria-Ilona von Patow, a Prussian baroness who will share with us what has enchanted her about this place and how it’s evolved since she first arrived on the island many years ago. She’ll show us her favourite – and a couple of secluded parts -- of Saint-Martin and teach us all about the 17thC fortification built by the architect Vauban. For dinner, your guides will gladly help you find the perfect restaurant to enjoy a dinner on your own in this pictureperfect port-side city. On our final day we’ll have arguably the best ride of the week: an incredible scenic loop on dedicated bike paths. Today we’ll use the ancient salt road, or Route du Sel, biking to the top of the island. Ride along virtually untouched villages such as Ars-en-Ré, Saint-Clément des Baleines or La Couarde and take a longer route if desired to the hidden villages of Loix and Les Portes. Lunch is on your own today in one of the numerous small restaurants of Ars-en-Ré. Don’t forget to take a look at the impressive clocher (church tower), absolutely unique to France! In the afternoon, either bike straight back to the hotel in St Martin or take advantage of a longer option through some of the island’s southern communities. Today is also the perfect time to challenge yourself with an amazingly flat, almost Century Ride! This evening, after a short drive from Saint-Martin back to the north point of the Island, we’ll celebrate our final night private dinner at the 17thC Phare des Baleines lighthouse! We’ll enjoy Champagne cocktails with 360° views of the coast before specially-prepared meals by local Chef Fabrice Bechemin in the courtyard of this classified French Monument. Our short drive back to our hotel in Saint-Martin won’t be long enough to realize what just happened! Other questions? Contact us 800 678 1147 [email protected]

Atlantic France Biking 2015 Notes From the Road

Memorable Maritimes _____________

By Olivier Maillard In 1983, I was a young little French guy and summer time meant something to me. These were the glorious days of my childhood, when I enjoyed my family’s journeys, whose only goal was discovering other parts of France. I clearly remember my father saying during a cold winter dinner that next year’s vacation would be on both Ile d’Oléron and Ile de Ré. My brother and I looked at each other, wondering what were these two mysterious islands that we had never even heard of. We decided to stay positive and to look forward to next July… A few months later, after waiting patiently for months and taking a chaotic drive from my native vineyards of Burgundy all the way to the Atlantic Coast of France, my brother and I were ready to know. After settling down in the villa my parents rented in St Martin de Ré, we were both armed with our beach toys and ran to the closest dunes. Arriving almost out of breath on top of the first one, what a surprise awaited us… there was no water. The ocean was a good mile away from the beach! We couldn’t believe it! We’ve never heard about “tide” before…

weeks, we learned all about the culture of the oysters and the history of the pirates. We watched every morning as the small fishing boats floated away, and we biked along those bike paths (flat enough that our little legs could fly!), wandering the countryside amongst natural bird reserves and immaculate beaches. Our parents taught us how to enjoy such a treasure of emotion, mingling with locals and eating grilled fish directly from local markets. Like my parents, B&R has always tried to introduce people to places that nobody had ever heard about before. So, two years ago when George and Norm asked where to go next, my answer was: “Of course, the islands of Ré and Oléron!” I no longer have my beach toys, but after some deep digging in the region, I’ve been able to (almost) re-create for B&R the exhilarating experience of my childhood. Just remember: the dunes are a little further from the water than they look.

Daily biking distances vary from 30 to 60 km (18 to 37 mi.), with options on some days as far as 90 km (55 mi.). The terrain is all flat. Any difficulty in the ride will depend on which way the wind is blowing. The walking and biking route on the third day on Aix Island is mostly flat along unspoiled landscapes and beaches.

Located in the historic town center of La Rochelle, this historic 17th century building is the perfect choice for our rendezvous hotel; it is located close to the beating heart of the city but far enough to offer peace and privacy. The contemporary hotel offers 36 rooms and suites with modern decor and views of the private courtyard, as well as a luxurious spa and a unique art gallery.

Please note: though mostly asphalt, many sections of bike paths are hard-packed gravel. This, plus the decidedly laid-back vibe of the islands, make the choice of a hybrid bike highly advisable. This is not a trip for those seeking long stretches of head-down, road-bike riding. Further note that some sections of bike path are not vanaccessible for sweeping.
