Day 1
Wednesday 23rd June
Weather: UK and Italy: hot and sunny Five of the group members met Jessica at Gatwick Airport for the flight to Venice, where we enjoyed good views of the city as we landed at Marco Polo Airport. We soon had our luggage and the minibus, and were heading north on the A27 towards Belluno, and then on to Agordo, where we stopped for a coffee break in the town square. The final leg of our journey took us via Cencenighe, where we turned west to Falcade, over the Passo San Pellegrino, and down into the Fassa Valley. We soon reached the little hamlet of Tamion and the Hotel Gran Mugon, our base for the week. We received a warm welcome from Stefano and his sister Katia, and were soon enjoying an excellent dinner and some welcome rest.
Day 2
Thursday 24th June
Weather: hot and sunny We had a fairly leisurely start to the day and after a splendid breakfast we walked from the hotel to explore the meadows and woods round Tamion. Swallows were swooping round the buildings and a Black Redstart was seen at a nearby barn. We walked up past the tiny church, and soon found a flowery bank where we started to get our eyes in tune for the local plants, which included Golden Hawksbeard, (Crepis aurea), the dark blue Dragonmouth (Horminium pyrenaicum) and Meadow Clary (Salvia pratensis), the pink Small Sainfoin (Onobrychis arenaria), and the yellow Hay Rattle (Rhinanthus minor agg.). The meadows had not yet been cut for hay and, as we progressed, we found Bearded Bellflower (Campanula barbata), Dark Columbine (Aquilegia atrata), Alpine Aster (Aster alpinus) and the Alpine Rose (Rosa pendulina), with its spine-free stems. Unfortunately the Orange Lilies (Lilium bulbiferum) were still only in bud. Further on we found plenty of Fragrant Orchids (Gymnadenia conopsea agg.) but only one Round-headed Orchid (Traunsteinera globosa), just coming into flower. Chimney Sweeper Moths were noted over the meadows, and a Mazarine Blue and the Chafer Hoplia caerulea were seen. The path entered a pine wood, with Spruce (Picea abies subsp abies) and Larch (Larix decidua) where the underlying rocks were Sandstone, and the vegetation showed a corresponding change. Here the plants included Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtilis), Tormentil (Potentilla erecta) and a lovely patch of One-flowered Wintergreen (Moneses uniflora). We also found Mountain Milkwort (Polygala alpestris), Gypsophila (Gypsophila repens) and Common Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris).

Tour Report
The path followed the hillside, before emerging into another meadow full of flowers, including the very fragrant, prostrate and spiny Genista germanica, Giant Cat’s-ear (Hypochaeris uniflora), the emormous, green-flowered White False Helleborine (Veratrum album) and a spike of the delicate, white St. Bruno’s Lily (Paradisea liliastrum). As we returned to Tamion along the road, a Golden Eagle circled low overhead, giving some excellent views. We then stopped to look at a large patch of Lady’s Slipper Orchids (Cypripedium calceolus) on the bank, and also Fly Orchids (Ophrys insectifera), a couple of Military Orchids (Orchis militaris), Mountain Milk-vetch (Oxytropis jacquinii), and a field full of St Bruno’s Lilies (Paradisea liliastrum). On the little road to the hotel, we noted Yellow Melancholy Thistle (Cirsium erisithales), and some more Military Orchids in perfect condition. After a short break, we boarded the vehicle to drive to Pozza di Fassa. We turned up into the Val de Sen Nicolo (also known as the Val San Nicolo) and then the Val di Monzoni, where we had our picnic of local cheeses and hams. Duly refreshed, we set off up the track towards the Refugio Taramelli. In the lower meadows we found Trumpet Gentian (Gentiana acaulis), Bavarian Gentian (Gentiana bavarica), Yellow Violet (Viola biflora) and some bushes of the Alpenrose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), just coming into flower. Higher up, other plants included Alpine Snowbell (Soldanella alpina) and Spring Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla vernalis), which was almost over. Green Alder (Alnus viridis) and Yellow Alpine Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla alpina subsp. apiifolia) were also recorded. Where we met the snow, it was thick across the path, but we crossed it, and continued the last steep climb to the Rifugio Taramelli, where some of the group rewarded ourselves with refreshments, and we all enjoyed the stunning views. A Black Redstart was nesting in the roof of the Rifugio. The path beyond the Rifugio was very snowy, so we decided to retace our steps. We stopped on the way down the valley to see Rock Soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides) and also found Yellow Milk-vetch (Oxytropis campestris), before returning to the hotel for another excellent dinner.
Day 3
Friday 25th June
Weather: Hot and sunny Today we headed north up to the Pordoi Pass (2239m), via Canazei, parking in the main car park at the top of the pass. We took the footpath, route 601, along the famous ‘Bindelweg’, mentioned by Farrer, the author, traveller, botanist and flower painter, in his 1913 book ‘The Dolomites’. We could tell that snow had not long left the bank above the path, where we found carpets of mauve Alpine Snowbell (Soldanella alpina), and a tiny clump of the pale pink Dwarf Snowbell (Soldanella pusilla). A little further on we found quantities of Monte Baldo Anemone (Anemone baldense), and the lemon-coloured Yellow Alpine Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla alpina subsp. apiifolia). A small boulder by the path held One-flowered Fleabane (Erigeron uniflorus), together with Moss Campion (Silene acaulis) and Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala). Several willows were noted, including Net-leaved Willow (Salix reticulata), Finely-toothed Willow (Salix breviserrata), with purplish catkins, and the taller Alpine Willow (Salix x hegetschweileri). On the shoulder we found Crocus (Crocus albiflora) and Oxlip (Primula elatior). We explored the cliffs to the right of the path, finding Draba dubia, Dwarf Buckthorn (Rhamnus pumilus) and Eidelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), also known by the less romantic name of Alpine Cudweed! We also found a small clump of the delicate Snowdon Lily (Lloydia serotina).

The Italian Dolomites
Tour Report
We proceeded to the steep banks below a ski lift where Scree Saxifrage (Saxifraga androsacea), Purple Saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia), Yellow Whitlow-grass (Draba aizoides) and a magnificent display of Vitaliana (Androsace vitaliana subsp vitaliana) were located. On the other side were a few flowers of Least Primrose (Primula minima). There were few butterflies, but a Mountain Green-veined White was seen. We then made our way back down the path, and drove a short distance back down the road for our picnic. We had lunch in a meadow with scattered boulders, by a stream, with Arolla and Dwarf Pines (Pinus cembra and Pinus mugo) around. The rocks were covered in Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala), Matted Globularia (Globularia cordifolia) and a Musky Saxifrage (Saxifraga exerata subsp. moschata). On a boulder by the layby we were delighted to find a more accessible specimen of Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum). From here we set off towards the Sella Pass, admiring the magnificent views before dropping down towards Selva. We stopped at a spot where a stream came down the mountain to explore the margins of the adjacent pine woods. However, the gravel in the valley floor was being worked, and the presence of a JCB did detract somewhat from the experience. A number of Rhaetian Poppy (Papaver aurantiacum) were seen, as well as Intermediate Wintergreen (Pyrola media), a Mouse-ear (Cerastium uniflorum), Creeping Sandwort (Moehringia ciliata), and a large clump of Lady’s Slipper Orchid (Cyprepedium calceolus), which were very fresh. It was then time to make our way back to Tamion for dinner.
Day 4
Saturday 26th June
Weather: Hot and sunny Today our destination was the Rosengarten. After another good breakfast, we boarded our vehicle for the short journey down to Vigo di Fassa, where we caught the cable-car up to the Rif. Ciampedie. We began our walk in the direction of the small village of Gardeccia. Alpenrose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), and Arolla Pine (Pinus cembra) were very much in evidence, together with False Medlar (Sorbus chamaemispelus), Blue-berried Honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea) and the little Leafless-stemmed Speedwell (Veronica aphylla). Rock Speedwell (Veronica fruticans) was found by a closed Rifugio. In the village we stopped for a refreshment break, where Black Redstart and Crag Martins were present. Climbing up beyond the village, Gentiana bavarica (Bavarian Gentian) and Trumpet Gentian (Gentiana acaulis) were evident all around. As the track grew steeper, we moved into an area of Dwarf Alpine Pine (Pinus mugo) and massive scattered limestone boulders. We set out our picnic amidst these, and were soon joined by Alpine Chough, which were very tame. After our lunch, most of the group continued up the steep path to the Rifugio Preuss, which appeared to teeter on the cliff above. On the boulders we found the silvery leaves of Pink Cinquefoil (Potentilla nitida) but, sadly, no flowers yet, and Bluish Paederota (Paederota bonarota), also not quite out. Other plants included the tiny greyish clumps of the leaves of Blue Saxifrage (Saxifraga caesia), Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala), Mount Cenis Lousewort (Pedicularis cenisia) and Least Snowbell (Soldanella minima). Short-leaved Gentian (Gentiana brachyphylla) and Triglav Gentian (Gentiana terglouensis) were also found, and a family of Alpine Accentors and Black Redstarts were in evidence. Eventually, we made our slow descent back to Gardeccia and on to Ciampedie. At Rifugio Negritella we stopped for refreshments before catching the cable-car down to Vigo di Fassa, and so back to the hotel.

Day 5
Tour Report
Sunday 27th June
Weather: Hot and sunny Today we journeyed south to Paneveggio, below the Rolle Pass, driving south to Predazzo, and turning east. We stopped at the Parco Naturale Visitor Centre where we explored the adjacent woods, meadow and river banks. Quantities of May Lily (Maianthemum bifolium), Nettle-leaved Speedwell (Veronica urticifolia), Whorled Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum verticillatum), Wood Stitchwort (Stellaria nemorum) and a small clump of Coralroot Orchids (Corallorhiza trifida) were found in the wood, while Aconite-leaved Buttercup (Ranunculus aconitifolius) was found on the river bank. The blue Perennial Cornflower (Centaurea montana), familiar from gardens, was on the grassy slope opposite the Centre. From here we made our way up into the Val Venegia, and began our walk though some damp meadows. These held many splendid spikes of Dactylorhiza majalis (Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid) and Alpine Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid (Dactyorhiza alpestris). In little pockets in a rock, opposite the Rifugio Malga Venegiota, we found Alpine Fleabane (Erigeron alpinus), and some tiny examples of Moonwort (Botrychium lunaria). We then passed a cliff with Bluish Paederota (Paederota baronota) in flower, Rock Valerian (Valeriana saxatile), and a clump of Blue Saxifrage (Saxifraga caesia) covered in flower buds. We had our picnic on a bank by the path, and then continued on up the path to a point where the trees gave way to major areas of scree. Here, on some very large boulders, we found Dwarf Alpenrose (Rhodothamnus chamaecistus), Bear’s-ear Primrose (Primula auricula), Livelong Saxifrage (Saxifraga paniculata) frustratingly close to flowering, and one flowering plant of the rare endemic Tyrolean Primrose (Primula tyrolensis). We also found a large patch of Dwarf Valerian (Valeriana supina) while on some screes, we saw a small clump of another Dolomite endemic, Alpine Scurvy-grass (Rhizobotrya alpina), together with more Leafless-stemmed Speedwell (Veronica aphylla). Along the stream were some fine specimens of Spiniest Thistle (Cirsium spinosissimum), and a damp patch held the Cotton Grass Eriophorum scheuchzeri. We then took the road to Falcade on the return journey, stopping on the north-east side of the Passo di Valles to look at Livelong Saxifrage (Saxifraga paniculata) in full flower. Another stop further down was by a meadow containing many spikes of Dark Rampion (Phyteuma ovatum), as well as Round-headed Rampion (Phyteuma orbiculare), while on the other side of the road was Dusky Cranesbill (Geranium phaeum). We then returned to Tamion.
Day 6
Monday 28th June
Weather: Hot and sunny Today we headed south-east again, this time for the Rolle Pass and the dramatic peak of Cimon della Pala. Passing through Paneveggio, we climbed up to the Pass at 1972m, and then took a dusty track on up to the Baita Segantini at 2200m, and began a walk up through the alpine grassland. We found Least Primrose (Primula minima), Monte Baldo Anemone (Anemone baldensis), Yellow Alpine Pasque Flower (Anemone alpine subsp apiifolia), while Trailing Azalea (Loiseleuria procumbens) was just coming into flower. We then moved up into an area of loose rock and open ground where we found a large number of Sequier’s Buttercup (Ranunculus seguieri), Mossy Cyphel (Minuartia sedoides), Spring Sandwort (Minuartia verna) and One-flowered Fleabane (Erigeron uniflora). Our ultimate aim was to reach an area of broken rocks and boulders below the looming cliffs of Cimon della Pala. 4

The Italian Dolomites
Tour Report
Moving on along the edge of the cliffs we found Long-flowered Primrose (Primula halleri), Snowdon Lily (Lloydia serotina), Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala), the magenta Italian Alpine Sainfoin (Hedysarum hedysaroides subsp exaltatum) and a number of plants of Bear’s-ear Primrose (Primula auricula). By now we were at the base of the cliffs we had been aiming for, and started to examine the boulders. We soon found a magnificent clump of one of the specialities: King of the Alps (Eritrichium nanum) together with Alpine Buttercup (Ranunculus alpestris), Draba dolomitica, and the rare Tyrolean Primrose (Primula tyrolensis). Androsace alpina, Purple Saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia), the pretty mauve Pyrenaean Whitlow-grass (Petrocallis pyrenaica) and Triglav Gentian (Gentiana terglouensis) were also found, but the Dwarf Alpenrose (Rhodothamnus chamaecistus) was barely in flower. We made our way back to the Rifugio, where we had our rather late picnic before beginning our descent. Just as we reached the road, we stopped at a bank which had a good show of Southern Butterwort (Pinguicula leptoceras). We then set off towards the Passo San Pellegrino and the Miralago where we explored the meadows behind the Rifugio. Plants here included Great Meadow Rue (Thalictrum aquilegifolia) and Alpine Clover (Trifolium alpinum), spikes of Spotted Gentian (Gentiana punctata), and a Martagon Lily (Lilium martagon) in flower. A flowering spike of Wolfsbane (Aconitum lycoctonum subsp vulparia) was also found. The meadows were also extremely rich in orchids, including Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia), Fragrant Orchids (Gymnadenia conopsea agg.), Shortspurred Fragrant Orchid (Gymnadenia odoratissima), Small White Orchid (Gymnadenia albida) Austrian Vanilla Orchid (Gymnadenia austriaca), Dark Vanilla Orchids (Gymnadenia rhellicani) and Red Vanilla Orchids (Gymnadenia rubra). Eventually we dragged ourselves away from these riches, not before discovering a better spike of Martagon Lily (Lilium martagon) and flowering Whorled Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum verticillatum) by the carpark, and returned to the hotel for dinner.
Day 7
Tuesday 29th June
Weather: Hot and sunny Today the group had a free morning. Some chose to stay around the hotel, while others chose to walk from the hotel into Vigo, and to visit the Ladin Museum. The latter group reported finding Bird’s-nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis) and Sticky Flax (Linum viscosum) en route. We then drove up to the Val de Sen Nicolo, this time continuing to explore this valley rather than turning off into the Val Monzoni. We parked the minibus and set up the picnic in the grassy parking area, where we found Smooth Honeywort (Cerinthe glabra) and Rock Redcurrant (Ribes petraeum). We were also surrounded by many Mazarine Blue Butterflies, which, attracted by moisture and salts, were landing on the food and on us. After lunch, we set off to explore the meadows of this valley, enjoying the different feel of the hay meadows. Alpine Milk-vetch (Astragalus alpinus), Heartsease (Viola tricolor subsp. subalpinum) and the harebell-like Campanula scheuzeri were all found, together with several plants of the petite dark blue Snow Gentian (Gentiana nivalis). Further on we found Garland Flower (Daphne cneorum), which is very similar to the Daphne striata we had found elsewhere. On some of the boulders were small clusters of the relatively unhairy form of Cobweb Houseleek (Sempervivum arachnoideum subsp. arachnoideum). We also located plenty of Vanilla Orchids: Austrian Vanilla Orchid (Gymnadenia austriaca) and Black Vanilla Orchid (Gymnadenia rhellicani), and two new orchid species, a form of Early Purple Orchid with wavy petals and sepals, Orchis ovalis, and the Burnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata). Eventually, we stopped for some refreshments at the Rifugio Baita Ciampie, before returning slowly down the valley, noting Alpine Honeysuckle (Lonicera alpigena) and Black Honeysuckle (Lonicera nigra) near the car park. It was then time to return to Tamion for our final evening. © Naturetrek

Day 8
Tour Report
Wednesday 30th June
Weather: fine, warm & sunny After a leisurely breakfast, and with our packing complete, we had a little time to spend before setting off for the airport. Karl left after breakfast, to catch the bus to Bolzano, as he continued his travels, but the rest of the group went in search of the Bird’s-nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis) found the previous day. This was duly admired and photographed, and we also noted some of the changes in the meadows over the week. We then had to pack the bus, bid farewell to Katia and her family, and retrace our steps south to Venice’s Marco Polo airport. We had a good flight back to the UK, our minds full of images of stunning scenery and alpine flowers.
