Lower Church The Holy Spirit brought people together into a Christian Community which was the basis of the early Church. Come and catch the Spirit this Easter Season as we gather as a faith community. We will read and study the Acts of the Apostles over a four week period. Bibles will be available to borrow or your may bring your own. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Siani at (516) 378-6696, Braulio Cacao at (516) 279-0232, Carolyn Jimenez at (516) 546-8040 or Carolyn Terzulli at (516) 546-3910. In the words of Pope Francis: “We need to let ourselves by imbued with the light of the Holy Spirit so that He introduces us the Truth of God, who is the only Lord of our lives.” ‘Truth, according to the Christian faith, is God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. Therefore, truth is a relationship. Let us ask ourselves if we have actually taken a few steps to get to know Christ and the truths of faith more by reading and meditating on the Scripture.”

4 May 2014

Dear Reader, Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Among the many people in the Church who have proclaimed that Good News throughout the centuries, I would like to call your attention to two of them: Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Both of these men were Priests. Both of these men were Bishops. Both of these men were Popes, and on 27 April 2014, both of these men were canonized Saints! Alleluia! Alleluia! What a gift to be a Priest! (Please pray for an increase in Vocations to the Priesthood.) What a gift to be a Bishop! (Please pray for our Bishops, especially recently Ordained Bishop Andrzej Jerzy Zglejszewski.) What a gift to be a Pope! (Please pray for the Pope.) What a gift to be a Saint! (Please pray to our Saints.) And while all of us are not chosen to be Priests, Bishops, and Popes; all of us are called to be Saints. Alleluia! Alleluia! In the context of this Easter-letter, a Saint can be defined as a person who like Christ Himself, consistently proclaims the Good News: in good times and bad, sickness and health; in season and out of season; when popular and unpopular. Pope John XXIII did this. Pope John Paul II did this. And so can you! As a matter of fact, over the past five years with the help of your contribution to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), you have already proclaimed the Good News and that proclamation has:  Delivered and/or served more than 550,000 meals to senior citizens and young families in need  Assisted more than 100,000 families through parish outreach centers and soup kitchens  Ministered to more than 300,000 patients and their families in local hospitals through the Diocesan Office of Hospital Ministry  Provided a Catholic Education to more than 113,000 of our children in public schools  Educated and formed future Priests and lay leaders for the Diocese of Rockville Centre  Brought the Word of God to more than 50,000 students in secular colleges across Long Island Please accept my gratitude for your pursuit of Sainthood. It has not only made a difference in the lives of those who benefit from the services provided by the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), but it has made a difference in my life as well which I look forward to proclaiming with you as your Pastor for another six years. Alleluia! Alleluia! In the Light of the Resurrection,

Rev. Father Douglas R. Arcoleo Pastor

 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR  The men and women we call Saints, are those who lived lives in response to the Love God offered them through the Life, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Our Holy Redeemer Christ Jesus! They may have fed the hungry, and gave drink to the thirsty. They may have clothed the naked and visited the sick. They may have visited the imprisoned and welcomed the stranger. They may have instructed the ignorant and counseled the doubtful. Whatever they may have done, they did it in response to what was done for them! That is how God makes a Saint, and Saints are what God is making at Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport!

READINGS FOR

11 May 2014 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

 1ST READING: ACTS II: 14, 22-33 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PSALM 16 2ND READING: 1 PETER I: 17-21 GOSPEL: SAINT LUKE XXIV: 13-35

PLEASE PRAY FOR:

On this Third Sunday of Easter we consider with wonder the account of Jesus appearing to the disciples on their way to Emmaus. These two disciples went to Emmaus discouraged and without hope, but after their encounter with the Resurrected Jesus they returned to Jerusalem full of hope and excitement. “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” (See Luke 24:13-35). This account gives us two sure signs of the presence of the Resurrected Jesus among us. First as we see above, our hearts burn within us when Scripture is read and explained to us. This is a sure sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. For the second sign we must go on reading: “Then the two recounted . . . how He was made known to them in the braking of bread.” Yes! In the breaking of bread! It is in the Holy Eucharist that the eyes of faith are opened and the Resurrected Lord is made known to us! Sure, we may have days of gloom in which our hearts are heavy and we feel downcast, but if we keep our eyes and ears and above all our hearts open, then when we come to Mass and we listen to the Scriptures and partake of the Eucharist we return home full of hope and excitement because we have recognized Him in the breaking of the bread.

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS BY: POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II APOSTOLIC LETTER

NOVO MILLENNIO INEUNTE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL II TO THE BISHOPS, CLERGY AND LAY FAITHFUL AT THE CLOSE OF THE GREAT JUBILEE OF THE YEAR 2000 To my Brother Bishops, To Priests and Deacons, Men and Women Religious, and all the Lay Faithful. 1. At the beginning of the new millennium, and at the close of the Great Jubilee during which we celebrated the two thousandth anniversary of the birth of Jesus and a new stage of the Church's journey begins, our hearts ring out with the words of Jesus when one day, after speaking to the crowds from Simon's boat, He invited the Apostle to "put out into the deep" for a catch: "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). Peter and his first companions trusted Christ's words, and cast the nets. "When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish" (Lk 5:6). Duc in altum! These words ring out for us today, and they invite us to remember the past with gratitude, to live the present with enthusiasm and to look forward to the future with confidence: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Heb 13:8). The Church's joy was great this year, as she devoted herself to contemplating the face of her Bridegroom and Lord. She became more than ever a pilgrim people, led by Him Who is the "the great shepherd of the sheep" (Heb 13:20). With extraordinary energy, involving so many of her members, the People of God here in Rome, as well as in Jerusalem and in all the individual local churches, went through the "Holy Door" that is Christ. To him Who is the goal of history and the one Saviour of the world, the Church and the Spirit cried out: "Marana tha — Come, Lord Jesus" (cf. Rev 22:17, 20; 1 Cor 16:22). It is impossible to take the measure of this event of grace which in the course of the year has touched people's hearts. But certainly, "a river of living water", the water that continually flows "from the throne of God and of the Lamb" (cf. Rev 22:1), has been poured out on the Church. This is the water of the Spirit which quenches thirst and brings new life (cf. Jn 4:14). This is the merciful love of the Father which has once again been made known and given to us in Christ. At the end of this year we can repeat with renewed jubilation the ancient words of thanksgiving: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His love endures forever" (Ps 118:1). 2. For all this, I feel the need to write to you, dearly beloved, to share this song of praise with you. From the beginning of my Pontificate, my thoughts had been on this Holy Year 2000 as an important appointment. I thought of its celebration as a providential opportunity during which the Church, thirty-five years after the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, would examine how far she had renewed herself, in order to be able to take up her evangelizing mission with fresh enthusiasm. Has the Jubilee succeeded in this aim? Our commitment, with its generous efforts and inevitable failings, is under God's scrutiny. But we cannot fail to give thanks for the "marvels" the Lord has worked for us: "Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo" (Ps 89:2). At the same time, what we have observed demands to be reconsidered, and in a sense "deciphered", in order to hear what the Spirit has been saying to the Church (cf. Rev 2:7,11,17, etc.) during this most intense year. (To be continued next Sunday …)

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS BY: POPE SAINT JOHN XXIII AD PETRI CATHEDRAM ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII ON TRUTH, UNITY AND PEACE, IN A SPIRIT OF CHARITY 29 June 1959 To the Venerable Brethren, the Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, Bishops, and other Local Ordinaries in Peace and Communion with the Apostolic See, and to all the Priests and Faithful of the Catholic world. Venerable Brethren and Beloved Sons, Greetings and Apostolic Benediction. We who have been elevated despite Our unworthiness to the Chair of Peter have often reflected on the things We saw and heard when Our predecessor passed from this life. Virtually the entire world, regardless of race or creed, mourned his passing. And then when We were summoned to the dignity of Sovereign Pontiff, great numbers of people, although occupied with other things or weighed down with troubles and difficulties, turned their thoughts and affections to us, and placed their hopes and expectations in Us. 2. For these reflections of Ours, We have drawn comfort and instruction. For this experience certainly is clear indication that the Catholic Church is forever young and is indeed a standard raised before the nations.(1) From her come a pervading light and a gentle love which reach all men. 3. Then We revealed Our plans to summon an Ecumenical Council and a Roman Synod, as well as to revise the Code of Canon Law in accordance with present needs and to issue a new Code of Canon Law for the Church of the Oriental Rite. This announcement received widespread approval and bolstered the universal hope that the hearts of men would be stirred to a fuller and deeper recognition of truth, a renewal of Christian morals, and a restoration of unity, harmony, and peace. Truth, Unity, Peace. 4. Today as We address Our first Encyclical Letter to the entire Catholic world, Our apostolic office clearly demands that We discuss three objectives—truth, unity, and peace—and indicate how they may be achieved and advanced in a spirit of charity. 5. May the light of the Holy Spirit come upon Us from on high as We write this letter and upon you as you read it. May the grace of God move all men to attain these objectives, which all desire, even though prejudices, great difficulties, and many obstacles stand in the way of their achievement. (To be continued next Sunday …)

¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

A la Luz de Su Resurrección,

Rev. Padre Douglas R. Arcoleo Pastor

¡DONDE VENIR A CASA ES IMPORTANTE!

OPENING YOUR EYES AND RECOGNIZING HIM As they approached the village to which they were going, He gave the impression that He was going on farther. But they urged Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while He was with them at table, He took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their sight. Saint Luke XXIV: 28-31
