The Fruit of the Spirit from Act & React By Kevin Stone For Nine Readers

E L

Purpose: To present the fruit of the Spirit as a theme of the whole Bible. To remind that fruit is a gift of God and cannot be manufactured by human effort. To show how God himself exhibits these qualities.

P

Production Notes: A dramatic scripture reading for nine readers, using Galatians 5:22-23 and the first few verses of John 15 to open the Bible’s cornucopia of spiritual fruit. It is designed to be read a cappella. It is important that the readers have voices that blend well. Strive for a musical quality in this piece. The tempo should be rather quick, with little or no space between lines. If the readers step on each other’s lines, it will help keep the audience alert and help emphasize the effect of harmony. (And a reminder that “saith” is pronounced “seth.”) The start of every line signifies who reads that line. If a word is underlined, however, the superscript will signify what other reader(s) will read that word in unison with the original reader. For example:

1: “In the beginning, God2 created the heavens3 and the earth2,3.” (READER 1 will read the entire line; on the word “God,” READER 2 joins to say that one word in unison; the word “heavens” is said by READERS 3 and 1 simultaneously; and “earth” is said by all three READERS together.) An asterisk within a line signals that the following line should be started at that point. For example: 1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens * and the earth.” 2: “Let the earth rejoice!” (As READER 1 says “and,” READER 2 will say “Let.” “The earth” will be said in unison, and then READER 2 will finish his line as if nothing had happened.) If practice time is limited, or if a simpler reading is desired, the asterisks and the underlining can be ignored. All scripture is taken from the King James Version (slightly modified in places) and is public domain.
