Diversity (across the city in terms of gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality and the interplay between them) is by this time a key social factor and has to be perceived as a resource not as an issue. We promote therefore a series of events and lectures diversity-orientated in order to help students to exit outside their comfort zone, to go beyond prejudices, to let themselves be involved in the local reality and help them to better understand Italian identity but also the existence of inequality at all social levels and the struggle for inclusion of those who still are not active agents on the social stage.

As an educational institution Capa, through these activities wants to sensitize and address students towards a proactive citizenship for the time they will stay in Florence. Following this tag students will be able to participate in initiatives related to charity work and in events specifically designed to encourage them to meet locals and get more involved in the host culture. Also, they will be stimulated to reflect on the role and the features of public institutions (such as the Health Care System) through some interesting opportunities of learning how they work in Italy.

These activities provide students with intellectual tools to investigate sites where culture and crafts has been produced - but also consumed by visitors and residents since the Middle Ages. Thanks to the activities falling within this theme, students will be able to discover different modes of creativity and be helped to put the city as a text in an historical context by acting themselves as craftsmen, visiting museums and places of interest out of the traditional tourist routes, and listening to guest speakers’ lectures on key moments of the history of Florence as a global city through the ages.

These activities are meant to help students to explore the city as a text. That is “read” the signs of architectural changes through the ages but also the development of the Tuscan landscape and the Florence environment and its future plans. As there is no land without its own culture and peculiar lifestyle, the events listed under this theme will help students to discover how the Italian lifestyle and regional–based economy often identifies a successful model for sustainable future.
