PROCESS: 1. Pre-lighten hair using PRAVANA Pure Light Power Lightener to the desired level. For purity of Locked-In color, follow the chart provided and pre-lighten hair to the level indicated for each shade. If hair is lightened beyond the recommended guideline, color transfer may occur. 2. Before applying Locked-In, hair must be freshly shampooed and completely dried. 3. Taking 1” sections apply color directly to the hair, applying section-by-section to ensure complete and even coverage. No developer is needed. 4. Allow to process for 20-30 minutes at room temperature. Once the processing is complete, lightly shampoo with VIVIDS Color Protect and rinse with cool water until the water runs clear. Apply VIVIDS Color Protect Conditioner and rinse. Style as desired.

Mixing/Customizing Colors: VIVIDS Locked-In can be intermixed to create any color imaginable. Due to the special pigments used, Locked-In colors need to be mixed thoroughly in the bowl. Mix the colors together until you see that there is no separation of the colors and a uniform color is achieved. To lighten or pastel any of the VIVIDS Locked-In colors, use PRAVANA’s VIVIDS Clear. Add VIVIDS Locked-In color of your choice to VIVIDS Clear until the color desired is achieved. VIVIDS Locked-In may be intermixed with the other VIVIDS Collection colors, but the color created may transfer.

Tips and Tricks: Locked-In colors cannot be removed with PRAVANA Artificial Hair Color Extractor or with any type of bleach. If the Locked-In color is no longer desired in the hair, the best remedial action is to lighten the color using PRAVANA’s Pure Light Power Lightener mixed with Zero Lift Developer. Apply this mixture to the color and allow it to remain on the hair for five minutes. This will not remove the color, but rather will lighten it to a point where hair can be colored to a darker shade. When lightening from a level 6 or darker to a level 10, performing a Silk Degrees DemiPermanent Shine Treatment prior to VIVIDS Locked-In application can even out porosity and create greater anchoring sites to hold color. Locked-In colors are direct-dyes and should be applied with great care to avoid stains to skin.

Feel inspired and create your color palette. Mix shades together to create custom colors by mixing thoroughly until a uniform color is created.

Apply your chosen shades in a pre-selected order to 2”-3” segments, creating a strong line at the beginning and end of each shade.

Continue working up the head, taking ½”-1” sections. Apply the colors in the same pre-selected order as in the first section that you color. The size of the color blocks will gradually increase as you work up the head and into sections with longer length, but should not necessarily line up to the previous section. Rather they should be stacked like shingles on a roof. This is key to keeping a consistent line of color once hair is all down.

Work up from the ear to the top of the head, taking ½”-1”sections, applying the colors in the same order and same fashion as through the back section. Lay barriers where needed.

Pre-lighten hair to a level 10 using Pure Light Power Lightener with your choice of developer. Flat-iron the hair prior to VIVIDS application as this technique requires precision for color placement.

Create a 1”-1½” wide horizontal section above the parietal ridge, off the center parting. This will be the section you are working in. Lay a barrier beneath this section and take down a 1/8“ subsection.

Starting with VIVIDS Locked-In Teal, press the color into the hair in thick, striated, vertical line formations.

In this same section, moving towards the face, place two thick, striated, vertical lines working up towards the part of the hair and evenly spaced. Place a clear film barrier lightly over this section. This is necessary for this technique, as each consecutive placement will rely on the placement in the previous subsection.

Bring down the next 1/8” subsection and smooth the hair down in the hair’s natural fall. Repeat the previous application using VIVIDS Locked-In Purple and moving slightly left and overlapping over the previous section in VIVIDS Locked-In Teal. Again, place a clear barrier over this section.

Take down another 1/8” section. Smooth the hair over the clear barrier in the hair’s natural fall. Place VIVIDS Locked-In Pink in between previous Teal and Purple blocks, overlapping where they meet the Teal and Purple. Place a clear barrier over this section.

Repeat steps 4-6 on the other side of the head. Process 20-30 minutes at room temperature. Remove barriers and rinse. Colors will remain locked-in and will not transfer while rinsing. Shampoo lightly with VIVIDS Protect Shampoo. Follow with VIVIDS Conditioner and VIVIDS Color Protect Sealing Spray.

Starting in the nape, section out varying sizes of strands and alternate the application to create a tie-dye effect. On one strand apply color to the length of the blonde, on the next apply one color to the ends and another color to the top leaving blonde out in between, on the next apply color halfway through the length of the strands, etc. This is a free-hand technique that varies in section and subsection sizes, as well as application.

Continue working up the head, varying the application of colors to create a tie-dye effect.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS PRAVANA ChromaSilk PASTELS have been formulated to provide creative colorists with an effective and easy way to create soft, elegant and exciting pastel shades. PASTELS contain special dyes that, while temporary by nature, have the ability to adhere to hair for a more lasting effect. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions for maximizing color deposition and retention when working with PRAVANA ChromaSilk PASTELS. How do ChromaSilk PASTELS work? PASTELS employ direct dyes, which absorb into and onto the hair. Because the colors rely purely on absorption to deposit and adhere to the hair, it’s critical the hair is pre-lightened to the proper level to ensure depth of color and longevity.

If I process PASTELS with heat will they last longer? No. PASTELS are formulated to process at room temperature. The use of heat to process PASTELS may cause the colors to breakdown and may create unwanted tones.

Can I dilute the ChromaSilk PASTELS with VIVIDS Clear? Adding the VIVIDS Clear to any of the VIVIDS or PASTELS colors will create an even softer shade for complete color customization possibilities.

How important is it to apply PASTELS to dry hair? As PASTELS are very soft, pale colors, it’s very important that PASTELS be applied to totally dry hair. If the hair is too damp the moisture will not only block color deposition, it will also dilute the colors somewhat.

How light do I need to pre-lighten the hair before applying ChromaSilk PASTELS? To get the truest representation of the PASTELS colors, the hair must be pre-lightened to a level 10. However, it’s important to understand that hair condition and the hair’s ability to absorb and retain color is also critical. This may guide you as to who are the ideal clients for this service. Who is the ideal client for PASTELS? Ideally, the client should have a natural base level no darker than a level 6. This would require lifting the hair 4 levels. Typically, this would place the hair in both the proper level and will have made the hair sufficiently absorbent enough to deposit and retain color. Clients with a darker base level than level 6 can certainly be lightened to a level 10. However, as this will require longer processing times while lightening, this will most likely take the condition of the hair to a point where it will not retain color as long as hair that has a more balanced level of absorption. These clients should be forewarned the colors might not last in the hair for any extended period. If I’m pre-lightening a client with a darker base level is there anything I can do to maximize color retention? As previously stated, lightening the hair more than 4 levels creates greater absorbency and at the same time, reduces anchoring sites in the hair for color to adhere to. To temporarily compensate for this, perform a Silk Degrees Treatment on the hair prior to applying PASTELS to equalize absorbency and to provide additional sites for the color to adhere to.

Can the pastels by used on hair extensions? Yes, on real hair extensions. You must remove any product or silicones that the manufacture applied to the hair extension. The first step is to use the Pravana Pure Light Power Lightener and Zero Lift as a cleanser prior to the PASTELS application. What other factors govern how long PASTELS will last in the hair? Frequency of shampooing and the type of shampoo used is critical. It’s important to cleanse the hair using a sulfate-free, salt-free shampoo, such as any of PRAVANA’s shampoos. Also, as the sun’s rays will break down any hair color and increase fading, it’s important to cover the hair when out in the sun. It is also recommended to avoid hard water/iron or chlorinated pool water as this may tamper with the longevity of the PASTELS. It is recommended to always rinse hair with cool water, as this helps close the cuticle, preventing PASTELS from fading. What can I use to protect my PASTELS? PRAVANA’s Intense Therapy and NEVO Color Lock both have UV protection to protect against environmental damage and the sun. Fresh! Volumizing Dry Shampoo will also increase the longevity of the PASTELS, keeping your hair clean and fresh in between washes.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW It’s important to understand that while these are semi-permanent, direct-type dyes, not oxidation-type colors, they are extremely long-lasting. It’s important that salon clients understand that these colors cannot be easily removed from the hair and in most cases, will remain vibrant in the hair for months. VIVIDS and PASTELS are never applied with any developer or peroxide. If you want to dilute the color of your VIVIDS or PASTELS color to make a more pastel shade, use the VIVIDS or PASTELS color of your choice in conjunction with VIVIDS Clear. Add VIVIDS Clear to the VIVIDS or PASTELS shade until you attain the color you are seeking in your mixing bowl. What you see in your mixing bowl is what you get in your hair. If a customer decides they no longer want their VIVIDS or PASTELS color, the best remedial action is to lighten the color using PRAVANA’s Pure Light Power Lightener mixed with water. Apply this mixture to the color and allow it to remain on the hair for only 5 minutes. This will not remove the VIVIDS or PASTELS but will lighten the color to a point where you can then deposit over the color with a more natural shade of hair color. It’s important to note these colors cannot be bleached completely from the hair. To attempt to do so will surely damage the hair and perhaps drive the color stain deeper into the hair fiber. Wefts of hair (at Level 10) are colored with ChromaSilk PASTELS Pretty in Pink. Let process for 20 minutes. 2. Create a section at or below the parietal ridge. When placed here, the flashes of color will peek out on the sides. 4. A 4” weft is added on each side to provide an amazing flash of color.

For a more permanent option 1. Pre-lighten horizontal slices just under the parietal ridge on each side of the head. Feather your PRAVANA Pure Light Power Lightener mixture on the foils several inches away from the scalp down to the ends. Pre-lighten to a pale yellow (Level 10). 2. Shampoo, condition and dry before applying your ChromaSilk PastelS shade of choice. Process at room temperature for 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition with any PRAVANA Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner.
