Bread Broken for a New World FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 2-3, 2016 ISAIAH 66:10-14C; GALATIANS 6:14-18; LUKE 10:1-12, 17-20

GATHER HYMNAL # 1021 “We mustn’t ever think that we’re Christians by accident. We’ve been called to share Jesus’ mission to proclaim the kingdom of God – the kingdom where God’s love reigns purely and without condition. There will be times when we will be called to stand in opposition to the world by the power and depth of our love, our commitment to justice, and our dedication to those who are suffering and in need – no matter what their race, sex, nationality or creed may be. The beatitudes that Jesus gave to us are guidelines for discipleship that must be active within us at all times. We must always be ready to respond as Jesus would respond. We must let Christ live in us, and minister through us. This is true discipleship.” In last week’s passage from Luke’s Gospel Jesus was teaching his followers about discipleship. I concluded my thoughts with the paragraph I just quoted. It’s a good introduction to this week’s passage that continues the theme. Having instructed them, we see that Jesus appointed seventy disciples to go out ahead of him in pairs. They were his first batch of missionaries. The first thing we should note is that Jesus enlarged his group of twelve by adding an additional seventy who had accepted his invitation to follow him, and he sent them off with a prayer. “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” (Luke 10:2) This is a most

interesting prayer. He’s putting the prayer in the context of harvest time. He’s not referring to the time of planting. He’s saying that God has already planted the seed – it’s harvest time now. God needs help. He needs laborers to gather the harvest. Recall the parable of the workers in the vineyard that Matthew shared in his Gospel. “The kingdom of God is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. Going out about nine he saw others standing around idol in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ He went again at noon, and around three o’clock and did likewise. Then going out about five o’clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’” (Matthew 20:1-7). The parable of the laborers teaches that God is continually inviting laborers to harvest his vineyard. The invitation comes repeatedly, from the dawn of our lives until its sunset. Let’s get really practical about the meaning of discipleship – about being a missionary. Sometimes the invitation comes in such an unextraordinary way that we can overlook it. Let’s think about the Christian home. I repeat again what I said in last week’s reflection. “We mustn’t ever think that we’re Christians by accident.” Let’s not underestimate the fact that the first place most of us met Jesus was in our homes through our parents and relatives.

The Pastor’s Reflections How many times have you heard Christian parents say that they’ve made the decision not to teach their children anything about Christianity because they wanted them to make a free choice when they reached adulthood. I find it so sad when this happens because the result is almost always the same. The parents gradually loose their affiliation with the Christian community and Christ begins to fade in their own lives. Their children are left in ignorance of both Christ and his community. Was it an accident that the child was born into a Christian family? That child could have been born into a Jewish or Muslim or Hindu family. But that didn’t happen. God gave that child to Christian parents who were invited, through that child, to labor in the Lord’s vineyard. Had those parents begun sharing their faith with their child two wonderful things could have happened. They could have continued to deepen their relationship with Jesus as, year after year, they shared the Christ within them, and they could have nurtured their children’s personal journey of faith by introducing them to Jesus. Sometimes we think that we have to be theologians to share Christ with our children. All we really have to do is nurture our own relationship with him through our personal prayer and to share in the life of the Christian community. Let me show you how simple it can be. Christmas time comes. We bring our children to church to look at the crèche. We tell them the story of the birth of Jesus. We talk to them about the stable and the star and the animals and the wise men. We have a Christmas tree at home and make our own crèche as a family. We make Christmas cookies and sing carols with them. All through the season we adults feed our faith by listening to the scriptures and the homily at the Sunday liturgy.

We take some time to explore the deeper meaning of the stories. We use them in our prayer. Year by year Jesus becomes clearer to us, and so does his kingdom. All along we’ve been hearing Christ and giving our children an opportunity to meet him as we did. This week’s Gospel tells us to be cautious. “Go on your way; behold I am sending you like lambs among wolves.” There are so many ways that the work of the disciple can be sidetracked. Again, for the sake of simplicity, let’s continue thinking about our children. Sometimes we hear people preaching a severe and often scary gospel. We can recognize them right away. They tell everyone what’s wrong with them. They talk a great deal about sin and God’s punishment. As parents it’s important to protect the children from their negative influence. That’s why parents have to nurture their own personal relationship with the Good Shepherd. They must believe and know in their hearts that God’s love for them is unconditional and wonderfully healing. That’s the message they must share with their children; not the message of the prophets of doom and gloom. So as we think of discipleship, we always have to be practical. We have to discern God’s invitation every day. Many are called to labor in the vineyard of the home where caring for the spiritual well-being of the family is primary. At our jobs we have to be Christ-like, too. It’s the way we give witness of him in the world. We have to be mindful of the common good, and be involved in works of mercy. We can’t overlook the poor or marginalized in our midst. If we’re employers we’re obligated offer a just, living wage. The vineyard of the Lord is all around us. Like the seventy disciples returning from their mission we must be filled with the joy of having Christ in our lives. The disciple, each of us, accepts the invitation to work in the vineyard every day. We’ll be rewarded because Christ’s life will deepen within us. Our labor will continue the harvesting and the kingdom of God will continue to grow.

AN INDEPENDENCE DAY PRAYER

STEWARDSHIP REPORT

Heavenly Father, as we celebrate our national independence we are reminded of our dependence on you, the source of our unity and peace. We ask you to stretch your hand over us and heal the divisions that continue to separate us and disrupt our unity. As we celebrate our independence we also call to mind the wonderful interdependence that you have established among all your children, our brothers and sisters. Preserve us from rivalry and prejudice. Bless all your children that we may live together in peace and harmony. Finally, Father, bless your Church in our country and throughout the world. Please give us the strength and determination we need to be apostles of peace. We make this prayer through you Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Sunday collection amounted to: $ 7,787.00 ParishPay amounted to: $909.91 Total donations: $ 8,696.91 We strongly suggest one hour’s wage as a just and meaningful donation. Please help support our work here at Saint Jean’s. Commit yourself to this community by committing one hour a week. Even though it’s still only June, we’re feeling the effects of a summer drought. The regular collection is down, but our expenses are not. This situation begets high anxiety. Please don’t forget us during your summer travels. Some parishioners do mail their regular contributions to us at 184 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021. You can always play catch up when you’re back in the city. Please assist us in making our payroll and energy expenses throughout the summer! Thank you for your help.

The Parish office will be closed on Monday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day and will re-open on Tuesday, July 5th.

Call the Director, Pauline Reenock, at 212 472-2853 ext.2 for more information and to arrange a visit.

THE CARDINAL’S APPEAL It’s Cardinal Appeal time again. Registered parishioners should have received notice from the Appeal Office of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese has lowered our goal a bit this year to $74,000. So far 94 community members have donated a total of $70,835. Most members of the community have still not contributed to this Annual Appeal and with only a little over $3,200 to go to meet our goal we have a very good chance. Envelopes are available for your convenience at the rear of the church. You may put your donation in any of the collection boxes in the church, place it in the Sunday collection or mail it directly to the Cardinal’s Appeal Office. Just make sure you put St. Jean’s as your home parish so that we’re credited for your donation. Thanks so very much for your generous response to this year’s Appeal. 6

MINISTRY-SERVICE Think about accepting the Spirit’s invitation to take a more active role in the life of this faith community – the St. Jean’s Community. So I’m throwing out the net to you today because our community needs more participation from parishioners in the liturgical ministries. Here they are. GREETERS – You will be the first friendly face parishioners and visitors encounter when they enter the church for the celebration of the Eucharist. You are the face of Christ through this ministry. You are the warm and welcoming representative of the community who directs people to their seats if necessary, assists people with wheel chairs or carriages and directs visitors to the rest rooms. You will offer the first and most important welcome to our community. 4 Greeters are needed for each Mass. USHERS – You choose individuals and families to bring the offertory gifts to the altar, take up the collection, assist individuals who may feel ill during Mass, open the doors at the end of Mass and do a quick clean up of the pews after the Mass in preparation for the next Mass. 8 Ushers are needed for each Mass. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS – You will distribute the Eucharist, the body and blood of the Lord at communion time. Some of you may also be interested in visiting shut-ins and bringing them the Eucharist. Some of you may also be interested in bring the Eucharist to the ill at Lenox Hill Hospital. 4 Ministers are needed for each Mass. READERS – You will proclaim the Sacred Scripture during the Eucharistic celebration and Prayer Services. 2 Readers are needed for each Mass. CHOIR – You will sing either at the 11 AM Mass or the 7:30 PM Mass and rehearse for an hour before Mass. As Richard Owen, our music minister writes in the bulletin every week, “the person who sings prays twice.” We can never have enough people in the choir. CATECHIST – You will teach or assist the teachers in the Religious Education Program. This is a very important ministry takes takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 4 o’clock until 6 o’clock. You will be working with our young people helping them to grow and mature in the faith. You will help in their preparation for First Communion, Penance and Confirmation. Our program is growing and we need many more volunteers for this Ministry. Joan Prenty, our Director of Religious Education, will train you and assist you as you work with the children.
