Northern Branch Notice Board Arms Collectors Guild February Shoot Held on the Saturday the 2nd at their Evandale range it was the first shoot we as ADA members attended as a Branch, with a reasonable roll up of members taking advantage of the day to sight in rifle before the season. After a briefing by a range official, things were sorted and we took to the benches or the prone lanes for some much needed practice. Two competitions were run during the day one at 200 meters and one at 250 meters, with no ADA member taking out the main positions several were well up the page, many again behind a certain young female member. We thanks the Guild for the opportunity to utilize their facilities and we will negotiate the opportunity to expand on this for further shoots, so stay posted for news on this front.

Simon Stone will have a display of his taxidermist work & Shane Fitzallen will be selling items from his OZ Buck range. So with a little help from a few members it should be a great display again this year If you can help please attend the April Branch Meeting or call Scott Freeman

Southern Branch 5th February Social Meeting We had a good turn up to our 5th of February meeting, including a couple of new faces and at least two new memberships applications on the night, We got the usual formalities of the business meeting out of the way and then we handed our meeting over to our guest speaker for the night, Matt Byrne from the Game Management Unit.

theme night was about “mongrel heads” Matt started things off with explaining why we see mongrels around, going through the different scenarios such as genetics, late born buck fawns and injuries. Matt then moved onto a brief outline of last deer season results, explaining that last year raised the bar big time as it was Tasmania’s most successful year under QDM with 1062 bucks harvested of which 49% of them went 200 Q/S or better and 13 % of those reached 225 Q/S or better. Matt also answered various other questions on management, policing and what he predicts this season will hold. After Matt was all questioned out we moved on to members and their mongrel heads.

As usual Matt was more than happy to come along to give a presentation and answer a few questions, we wasn’t sure if he would be able to make it as Matts wife was due to give birth to another child ! Thankfully though the bub took pity on us and decided to put! As our

Neil McCormick started off, firstly with an unusual set of Rusa antlers that were given to him a while ago, then Neil showed us the antlers from his first ever Fallow Buck shot way back in 1977, a very scrappy head , Neil wasn’t sure how old the deer was but he said it’s body was huge,

Neil then moved on to his third mongrel a very non typical Fallow Buck shot 3-4 seasons ago, Neil described how that hunt unfolded also.

It was Gerard’s turn next, although he was talking about Jeremy Darcy’s mongrel and how Jeremy came upon the deer, hunting it and the disappointment of the bucks very weak side that he couldn’t see until the deer was killed, this buck had been shot before with some terrible looking wounds but didn’t seem the affect it’s mobility. Thirdly was Dean Reynolds with his mongrel Sambar, one great antler of 27 inches but the other was a handlebar, Dean described the hunt but the real story was the marathon of getting the whole animal out to the vehicle with help from his mates, not far distance wise but still a huge physical achievement, even the last bit when the stags hock got caught between some fencing wire. Those attending voted Dean as the winner, mainly because of the huge recovery effort; Dean happily accepted the prize of a Bushnell Trail Sentry Trail Camera.

Lastly it’s worth mentioning that Brian Wightman, the Parks & Wildlife minister wants to get to know Tasmanian hunters more, so he is looking to attend meeting around the state, at this stage he will be attending our April or maybe even the June meeting, this will be a great chance for us to impress and maybe ask a few questions and get some answers right from the horse’s mouth, so we will really need to pull out the bells and whistles, when the meeting date is confirmed we need as many members to attend as we can including wives and kids, this will be a time to impress.
