The Batavieren Race is on Even though Nick is not running the Bata this year, because his knee still hurts from the 7.1 km from last year, he is very passionate about the Bata:

Aaah the Bata444 race! It's that time of the year again! How awesome this race is. For all the people running for the first time, welcome. For those who've ran before, welcome back! What is this race? You will sit for quite a while in a bus, with several other arribanen, who you may or may not know! You'll drive from one spot to another, get out of the bus or get into the bus, untill your moment is finally there! You can run!Have you trained enough? Are you injury free? Will the bus be on time to pick you up again? So you wont get cold? Aah. the Bata444 The first time i ran, was two years ago, during the night shift. I ran the 4.8km, the last of the night shift. I remember that Beer Sijpesteijn, did the second run. He never goes jogging, except during the Bata444. He told me he always does this particular run, because he wanted to join the race, and then just drink beer. I remember my race pretty well. I was passing several people actually, even though it rained like crazy! I think my average speed was pretty good, and overall that year Arriba finished 58th, out of 350 teams, which was really good! Last year, I ran for the second time. This time, I ran as chairman, so I ran from the Oude Markt to the sintelbaan at the university. Slightly a longer distance, i think 7.8km (it was 7,1km actually - red.). However, at the start, people are cheering you on. While running, people come outside and cheer you on. When at the university, 1000's of students are cheering you on. That was truly an amazing feeling, and I believe both Moniek and Redmer will really enjoy this! And I'm really curious what Redmer will be wearing once he finishes! Want to know what I mean? Then you should watch around 18.00, because then Redmer will likely finish. Moniek will finish around 17.45! This year, I won't be running. Too bad, but on the other hand, it's also time for some young guns to run in my place. Im getting old. Actually, on the day of the Bata, im turning 25 years old! Yuks! For everyone, have fun, run your asses off, and let’s put Arriba on top! Nick van het Veen

* According to the official results, we ended on place 126 because we received (unfairly) too much time penalty. Not taking into account this penalty, we would have ended on place 75. ** Because we did not have runners for the morning, we did not run more than 5 stage. Because if this, we were disqualified. *** Something went wrong during the enrollment. We made a temporary enrollment but not a definite one. Because of this, we could not join.

Did you know that... ... Arriba always wants to be faster than Harambee? ... The fastest runner last year was Beer? ... Traditionally he did the second run? ... I think he got lucky, because Gijs wasn't there? ... Beer won't run for arriba this year? ... Gijs will take his place? ... Last year we had several men doing women runs? ... we've gotten penalties because of it? ... we've gotten 48 minutes of penalty time last year? ... we finished 158th that year? ... We can beat this place? ... last year's race was infamous for our (current) secretary? ... He's now known for a special sound? ... Davey and Nick had a great laugh because of this? ... They weren't only laughing because of his sounds? ... the longest distance is 12.5km? ... it is run by davey? ... the Flaba is next week? ... Seriously, it is next week? ... If you want to join, you need to check http://dbvarriba.nl/flaba … Arriba will celebrate its 50th birthday this year? … Arriba will celebrate this with all the old members on October 18?

Season Summary by the chairman Dear Arribans, The competition has come to an end, but no worries, there is still the summerleague for all of you who want to keep playing basketball. The last game of the season was a real nail biter for heren 1. They won by two points from the number 6, Hanze stars. It was an extra special game for Rens, because it was against his old club. By halftime it didn’t look like we were going to win. We were trailing by more than 10 points, but the opponents couldn’t keep their head cool. They had more than 4 technical fouls and 4 players fouled out. In the end we kept playing our own game and Robert even dunked over a 12-year-old! This brought us the fourth win of the season, but it could have been a lot more. Heren 1 finished the season on the 11th place and are playing in the 1ste klasse next season. Let’s see if they can become champion! Heren 2 ended the season on the 8th place (of 9), but in what kind of finish. They won by double digits from the number 1 and spoiled their championship celebration a little bit. Unfortunately Bart had to leave the game early to go to the hospital after a collision with another player, but after a bit of glue he was all fine. They won the same amount of matches as the heren 1, but played less, so their winning percentage was better. The season for heren 3 was a real chaotic one. They suffered from lots of injuries and leaving players and after a while there were only two players left. Luckily heren 4 was there most of the times to help out with the matches. At the last game of the season they finally had a full team and showed what they are capable of. They won by a convincing 14 points from Amical end ended the season on the 6 th place. Not bad for a team with only 2 players. Heren 4 ended the season a few places below heren 3, on the 8th place. The last two games they were on a roll and won 2 in a row. They finally had enough players those games, and under the leadership of coach Davey they played a full court press which paid off. Unfortunately they lost the Derby two times this year, but because half of the heren 4 players also played for the heren 3, you cannot really say they lost. The last match they won with 5 players against 10 players from Risne Stars. The ladies team played three practice matches this season and one tournament. Even the UT-Nieuws was there the first match to make pictures and write an article about the ladies. Unfortunately they lost the first two practice matches. On the ladies day tournament they won one game and finished on the fourth place. Hopefully there are enough players for next season, so the ladies can play competition again. At this moment we can use some extra players, so spread the word! Redmer de Haan

The T-course Being a referee is a proud job. But leading a match while everyone (even the audience) dares challenging your calls can be tough. To prepare you for this, Arriba organizes F-courses or E-courses. However, most people seem to skip the most important course which Rayon Oost has to offer: The T-course (or Twente-course)! This course has special rules, such as: - If you are shooting via the board, a players needs to call it before the ball is released from his hand - If you score the 100th point, you have to buy a round for the team. - If you are in Twente, you have to shoot the free-throw via the board. - If you get a technical, you need to buy your team a keg of beer (Davey!). - If you flop, you have to lay down on the place where you flopped for the rest of the game. Only special individuals are allowed to take this course. Do you think that you are a special individual (no, not you Davey), send an e-mail to [email protected]!

The Aribba toast. Do you ever have that feeling? Drinking beer after practice or after a game, when suddenly, the rest of the team starts making weird noises and ends up with their chin in their beer. Then you probably don’t know the famous Arriba toast! But don’t worry, Arriblad to the rescue. Just follow these easy steps and you’ll be a true insider! Step 1. Get a beer. Or even better, let someone else buy you a beer. Step 2. Form a circle with all the Arribanen

Step 5. Move your arm forward again, while saying ‘Heeuuu’ (the second ‘Heeuuu’ is pronounced slightly lower, the give it the extra back-and-forth effect.

Step 3. Stretch out your arm which holds the beer like this:

Step 4. Move your arm back, while saying ‘Heeeuuu’

Step 6. Move your arm back again, while saying ‘Skål’. Skål (pronounced in Dutch like Skool) is Norwegian for ‘cheers’. You have to ask old people from Arriba why we use this. Not even the Arriblad has info on this. A good time for that question will be the lustrum on October 18!

Step 7. Move your arm forward again, while again saying ‘Skål’ (again saying in a slightly lower tone, to give it that back-and-forth effect.)

Step 10. Your chin should be beer-foamcovered by now. The amount of foam dripping from your chin is measurement of manliness. Use the outside of your free hand to throw the foam on someone else. A high priority target would be the current chairmen.

Step 8. Move your arm so that the beer touches your chin.

Step 11. Enjoy your Beer. Although people have tried doing the Arriba toast with shots, it is best to use a beer so that step 10 can be performed. Step 9. Move your head left-and right while making a motorboat sound (wbrlblrlrblrrbl).

Summerleague The summerleague is always a great moment of the year. Discussions about the teams. Especially if one team has more Heren 1 players than the other team. This year the summerleague started on Monday the 28th of April. More than 50 people signed up, which is great! With 2 matches played, the results are as follows: Team 2 won a close match against Team 1, 40-41 with Moniek blocking Wouter in the last seconds. Team 4 won a not so close match against Team 3, 66-54. For all the inside information, statistics etc. check out http://dbvarriba.nl/summerleague. Of course, the summerleague is a great opportunity to gather funny moments and news. Thats why the Arriblad will have a special summerleague edition, coming soon. With this edition also comes a special column, Agetin’ a fool! An example of an Agetin’ a Fool moment would be the bowling play from the Heren 1 against the Basketiers’71, shown in the QR-code from 4:20. If you are able to capture an Agetin’ a Fool moment on video, send it to [email protected] and you can win a nice prize!
