I

n November 1981, my husband and I—on home assignment with Wycliffe—arrived at the International Linguistics Center in Dallas, Tex., where future Wycliffe translators and linguists received their training. We were assigned to work at the center for the next year, and needed housing, but the only housing available was in the student dorm. For the next three weeks, the two of us and our 2½ -year-old son lived next door to Lino and Amilda Smith and their three-year-old son, Wikaliler Daniel. Lino, a brilliant young national pastor from Panama, South America, was receiving training in preparation for joining Keith and Wilma Forster (see “Kuna Bible finished,” page 3 and cover photo) in translating the New Testament into Kuna, the Smiths’ mother tongue. Over the years, we kept in touch with the family. In God’s providence, our path again crossed with the Smiths. In 1993, when they were in Dallas again, we shared Easter dinner together. That Sunday we also invited two Chinese exchange students for the meal. We were thrilled as we listened to Pastor Lino share the gospel with the students. They knew little about Christianity, and Pastor Lino graciously answered their questions. We rejoiced with the Smiths when, in 1995, the Kuna New Testament was published. In 1999, when translation of the Kuna Old Testament began, Pastor Lino joined the Forsters and the translation team. Years have passed since then; although Pastor Lino retired from the translation team in 2006, he continues to actively serve the Lord and his people. He has become pastor to pastors. He travels the length and breadth of the San Blas archipelago, homeland to Panama’s Kuna people (see cover photos), encouraging and discipling Kuna pastors and laymen. Wilma Forster writes, “Lino is greatly loved and is very gifted in counselling with younger men in the pastorate. Both Lino and Amilda are very involved with teams Pastor Lino, Elizabeth and Amilda Smith at Elizabeth’s graduation from medical school

that go to the Kuna from various parts of the United States to do missions, construction, VBS, etc.” The adult Smith children are following in the footsteps of their parents. This spring son Daniel will be graduating with a PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. His future plans include working with the Kuna community and local churches to encourage both education and discipleship. The Smiths’ daughter, Elizabeth, graduated as a doctor from medical school in Panama in December 2013 and will be doing medical work among the Kuna people. Both share their parents’ concern for their people. Thank God for servant-minded perseverance the Smiths have displayed— through several generations!

Kuna Bible finished

O

n December 6th, Canadians Keith and Wilma Forster (see cover photo) rejoiced to complete typesetting the entire Bible for Panama’s Kuna people. Forsters worked on the translation with a team of national translators, and the Bible is now ready for press. At times Keith wondered if they would ever reach this milestone. He would look back to the promise God gave him in 1963, when he was called into full-time service: “Be strong and courageous and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God will not fail you or forsake you until ALL the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished” 1 Chronicles 28:20 (NIV). Praise God with the Forsters for this milestone. On completion of the Kuna Bible, the Forsters felt it was time to make a transition from the field. Because their three adult children live in Texas,

Forsters have chosen to settle in a seniors’ apartment complex at Wycliffe’s International Linguistics Center in Dallas. They spent June and July going over the final details of the Bible manuscript with their Kuna team. In addition to packing and saying goodbyes, Keith spent August and September Keith and Wilma Forster praying before proofreading proofreading the manuscript. October through mid-December found the Forsters typesetting at Wycliffe’s JAARS Center. The Bible will be printed in Korea. Dedication celebrations will be held in Panama in mid-September. The Forsters pray earnestly that God will place a deep hunger for Himself in the hearts of the Kuna people in preparation for the coming of the Word. ❏❏Thank the Lord that the entire Bible has now been typeset and is ready for printing. Pray that the printing process will go smoothly. ❏❏Pray for the Forsters as they begin this next stage of life after 40-plus years of service on the field. Thank the Lord for their perseverance. ❏❏Praise the Lord for Pastor Lino Smith, who worked on the translation with the Forsters from 1982 to 2006, and for the team of four Kuna men who completed the Old Testament translation with them: Teobaldo Martínez, Jaime Rios, Hernín Smith, and Amalio Vergara.

Wycliffe Canada Gathering 2014 ❏❏The Gathering will be held this year on May 12 and 13 at River’s Edge Camp near Cremona, Alta. The Gathering is meant to be a time of refreshing and revitalizing for Wycliffe Canada staff—including volunteers—and alumni. It will be a time of renewing vision and passion for the mission of Wycliffe Canada, and the building of community. Pray for the committee as they continue to plan and for a blessing for those who attend, enjoy a time of community and hear how God’s Word is transforming lives around the world.

Harold and Anne Penner, from Winnipeg, Man.

H

arold and Anne went to the Philippines in 1996. They work with M.K.s (missionary kids) as a teacher and administrator, respectively, at Faith Academy in Manila. Anne is the human resources director for Faith Academy. Harold teaches woodwork and welding in high school, and industrial arts in middle school. He also Harold and Anne Penner coaches soccer and co-coaches tennis. Although they weren’t affected directly by super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on November 8th outside of experiencing moderate winds and rain, many of the domestic helpers* involved in a Bible study in the Penners’ home were affected. Shortly after the typhoon, Anne wrote: “Last night at my Bible study with domestic helpers, we spent most of the time reading Scripture and praying together. Each woman prayed in her own language, often weeping, as she prayed for those affected by the awful storm that swept through the Philippines a few days ago. I couldn’t understand much, but over and over again, I heard them thank God for His love, His presence, and His care for them and for their families.” During the school break, Filipina domestic helpers—Myra, MaryJane, Veron and Yoyen— visited with their families in the storm-stricken area. On their return to Manila, they showed photos of areas where most of the homes were destroyed and new homes of tarps and tin are now providing shelter. They found their relatives still struggling in the aftermath of the storm, but none reported that close relatives had died. One difficulty is that not all of the relief goods get to those who need them. The church has become a centre for relief work, with many more now attending the church services. ❏❏Pray for continued recovery for those devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. ❏❏Praise the Lord that four new staff have joined Faith Academy for the second semester. Pray that God will once again provide for staff needs for the next school year (2014-2015). ❏❏Praise the Lord that about 30 students made a decision to follow Christ during Spiritual Emphasis Week held Jan. 27-31, and about 30 more indicated they wanted to be more intentional in their faith. Pray that the Holy Spirit continues to move in the midst of Faith Academy. *Filipina employees who work in the homes of Wycliffe missionaries.

Danny Foster Chosen as New Director of CanIL

A

fter working with Wycliffe since 2003, Danny Foster recently took over the position of associate director of the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) and will succeed Mike Walrod as president of CanIL in March. Danny and Ranette, who are originally from Hamilton, Ont., face some unique challenges as they move from a field assignment to a home assignment. Although Danny, Josiah, Isaac and Ranette Foster they’re coming home, a lot has changed in Canada over the past 10 years. Also, for their children born in Tanzania, Canada is a completely new country and so it seems they all have some adjustments to make! Another unique challenge includes learning some new ways to conceptualize and communicate their ministry effectively. Although their impact has grown significantly from a regional level to a global one, the Fosters are now one step removed from the place where that impact happens—something both they and their ministry partners are adjusting to. In coming to CanIL, Danny and Ranette bring valuable field experience with them. They spent the years between 2004 and 2012 working in East Africa in the area of training and development. They were also involved in the design and implementation of a cluster strategy for the region which led to the startup of Bible translation work for 19 language communities in three Tanzanian provinces. After their time in Africa, they lived in the U.K., where Danny began postgraduate research in education at the University of Bristol. For his PhD work, he is investigating policy issues which affect quality of education in minority language communities. Ranette will continue to work part time with Wycliffe, assisting Danny in his transition into the leadership role of CanIL. She has also been excited to resume her former career as a rehabilitation assistant and has just begun working casual hours with the Fraser Health Authority. The Fosters have two sons, Josiah (2005) and Isaac (2007), who were born in Dar es Salaam and have enjoyed a unique childhood where lions and elephants are much more than just the stuff of children’s books.

Alan and Loverna Hood, originally from B.C., now in Calgary, Alta.

A

lan and Loverna joined Wycliffe in 1986 and served in Papua New Guinea (PNG) between 1988 and 2004. While there, Alan worked in construction and Loverna was a physiotherapist. In 2006, the Hoods moved to Calgary, where Alan took on the role of photo services manager and photographer, while Loverna cared for her mother who had serious health needs. Since that time, Alan has worked to guide the Alan and Loverna Hood photo aspects of the Wycliffe communications department into the digital age, while producing images that reflect the difference Bible translation is making around the world. Many of Alan’s images are used in Wycliffe Canada’s award-winning magazine Word Alive, as well as brochures and visual presentations. Other global Wycliffe organizations frequently use Alan’s images as well. “Nothing inspires my passion more than hearing how much difference God’s Word is making in those who read it for themselves,” writes Alan. “Like the

family in Chad, where the father (a pastor) told of how his wife and children were now asking him questions and telling him of things they understood from the Word of God. Before this, he said he had to read and explain everything from another language. Needless to say, Esther keeps busy caring for their children at home as well as homeschooling their girls. ❏❏Pray for wisdom for Tom as he works on Paratext and responds to user feedback.

ince spring 2008, the Hindles have worked with Wycliffe Canada where Tom is a computer software developer, working on Paratext and Esther is a busy stay-athome mom. During the past summer, a new version of the Paratext Bible translation software was officially released. Tom writes: “It’s been encouraging to see that in a short time since release, Tom and Esther Hindle with Hosea, Hope, Heidi, more than 1,000 people John and Phinehas (Fin) around the world are using the new software version in their Bible translation work.” Now that it has been released, Tom is continuing to work on maintaining Paratext, responding to user feedback and making changes where necessary while starting work on the 2014 version. The Paratext program, developed jointly by the United Bible Societies and SIL International, allows translators to input a draft of the text and check the draft against the original Greek and Hebrew texts, modern translations and resource

A

fter joining Wycliffe in 1990, April served in a variety of jobs and in various departments in the Calgary office. To gain field experience, she worked overseas from June 1993 until May 1994, serving first in SIL Indonesia and then in SIL Asia Area based in Manila, Philippines. April and Phil were married in May 1999. After Phil received an early retirement in November 2009 from the local phone company, they both wondered where the Lord was leading them. An opening with Phil and April Leppke TransWorld Radio (TWR) on the island of Guam in 2011 soon proved to be a good match for Phil’s skills. They’ve been working there ever since then, and enjoy serving overseas. Phil uses his skills to keep transmitters in working order, while April serves as the Wycliffe data storage co-ordinator, working from a distance. The TWR office has graciously allowed April to work in their office building while Phil works in the back on the transmitters. April tracks Wycliffe members’ information for them to be able to receive their Canada Pension. She updates information on a daily basis on two different personnel systems. She also tracks

other information that keeps the Wycliffe board updated. ❏❏Praise the Lord for Phil’s successful cataract surgery and recovery. The surgery could not be done on Guam, so they travelled to Houston, Tex., to have it done. Also give thanks for safety while travelling to and around Houston.

Ross and Ellen have two adult children and four grandchildren. They thank the people who have been praying for their daughter, Kathy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. In 2008, she underwent another round of chemotherapy and has done well on estrogen-blockers since that time. Last December when new tumour growth was noted, she was given more treatment. But in spite of the long journey, Kathy remains cheerful and continues to work and be involved in several community activities. ❏❏Praise God that just the right people were able to lend their voices to The JESUS Film project. The team struggled to shorten the Manobo script to fit the exact time slots of each segment, but with God’s help, all was accomplished well.

❏❏Ask God for good health and for funds to finish paying for Phil’s eye surgeries. His eyes have healed well, and he can now drive at night. ❏❏Pray that the seed of God’s Word that has been sown in Guam and Asia through radio transmission would bear much fruit. ❏❏Pray for an increase in April’s level of financial support, and for wisdom in choosing a new medical insurance plan. ❏❏Pray for encouragement for the women in April’s Bible study who are going through many challenges in their lives.

❏❏Pray for adequate funding for the Old Testament project. The team has completed and published the books of Samuel and Kings, but there is much more work ahead.

oss and Ellen Errington joined the Cotabato Manobo language project in the Southern Philippines in 1976. Others had laid the foundations, but the Erringtons had the joy of completing the New Testament translation in 1988, with a dedication held in 1989. After publishing about 25 per cent of the Old Testament in 2005, the Erringtons now assist a local team of translators as consultants and trainers as they work to Ross and Ellen Errington complete the Old Testament. Recently the team dubbed The JESUS Film soundtrack in Manobo and are excited that copies will soon be available for showing throughout the language area. Since 2006, Ross and Ellen have worked from their home in Langley, B.C. They are program managers with OneBook, a close partner with Wycliffe, which connects Canadian financial partners to overseas projects led by local translators and literacy workers. Currently the Erringtons oversee 13 projects in Asia, making regular visits and communicating frequently by email. The Erringtons also serve as SIL Asia area consultants in translation (Ross) and literacy (Ellen). Ross plans to be in South Asia this spring, checking the translation done by two national teams. Ellen plans to lead a workshop there and then will teach a two-week course in the Philippines. Prayer Alive

T

he Creech family has been serving in Dakar, Senegal, since 2001. Ken’s initial role was operations manager, and since April 2009, he has been director of SIL’s* branch in Senegal. In the coming months, several language teams expect to complete the translation of the New Testament. Ken is encouraging the branch toward closer partnerships with the Cheryl, Rachel and Ken Creech Senegalese church and other ministry partners in order to increase the impact of the work. One significant partnership is the a multilingual education project, which teaches young children to

read in their mother tongue before introducing them to French, the official language. The project has encountered many obstacles, but the response from the children and educators has been enthusiastic. It’s exciting to Ken to see eight new families joining the branch this year. Cheryl has been homeschooling their daughter, along with providing member care and child safety training in the branch. She spends one day a week at the SIL centre connecting and praying with colleagues, and also facilitates a regular women’s Bible study and prayer time. Their young adult sons, Trevor and Darren, are both employed in Waterloo, Ont., after completing degrees in computer science and piano performance, respectively. Rachel is in Grade 11 and hopes to study in the medical field after she finishes high school. The family plans to return to Canada in summer 2015 after Ken finishes his second term as director. They are discussing and praying about future plans. ❏❏Pray for the Lord’s guidance in starting a large project to translate the Bible into basic Wolof, the most widely used local language.

L

inguists and literacy workers in the Kwomtari language of Papua New Guinea since 1990, the Honsbergers returned to Manitoba for home assignment in June 2013. They are thankful to be able to rent the same house in Altona as they lived in previously, and for all of the offers of furniture and gifts of groceries when they moved in. While in Canada, they hope to spend a fair amount of time working on Kwomtari language material. Reporting back to financial and prayer partners on a personal level in Manitoba and Ontario is also part of their plan. “This has been an exciting term for us and there is a lot to share,” Carol writes. As of December, they had already made one 8,000-km road trip. Part of the trip took them to Waterloo, Ont., where Murray was privileged to conduct Prayer Alive

❏❏Pray for Didicus who voiced a strong desire to work on drafting the book of Luke. They are able to call him and encourage him on his cellphone Murray and Carol Honsberger when he spends time in a coastal town with cellphone coverage. ❏❏The oral Bible storytelling group completed their last workshop and have returned to the village. Pray that they will be encouraged as they share stories from God’s Word with their family and in ministry.

Marjorie Moore, from Calgary, originally from Thamesford, Ont. (near London)

erving with Wycliffe for the past 25 years, Marjorie Moore has worked on a Bible translation team in the Central African Republic and has held various positions in the Wycliffe office in Calgary. She currently works as receptionist. She also reads and processes member project reports, which are required on a semi-annual basis to help Wycliffe be accountable for donations received and meet Canadian government requirements for funding activities outside of Canada. Field members need to report their activities as well as the impact resulting from these activities. Marjorie is encouraged by what the Lord is doing in various situations as she reads through the reports. Marjorie serves as a facilitator in the Single Moms Ministry at her church, seeking to encourage women who are in very difficult life situations. Her children—Jonathan, Zachary, Gabriel and Naomi—have now all completed school, and are living at home while they seek employment in their fields of training and interest. Marjorie Moore

enji and Sandy moved to Japan in December 2012 to assist Kenji’s ailing parents and to work with Bible translation initiatives in sign language (SL) for the deaf Christians living in the Asia Pacific area. ❏❏Thank the Lord that there is an increasing awareness about the need for Bible translation into sign language among Wycliffe’s circle of influence. Instead of looking at Deaf ministry as “special needs,” people are now looking at it as a “mission to a minority language group.” ❏❏The Kondos are the only Christians—besides Kenji’s mom who recently became Christian— in a Buddhist community. Pray for a breakthrough in the barriers that exist.

❏❏Pray for encouragement and perseverance for Sandy as she learns Japanese besides learning JSL. She is going through cultural fatigue and occasionally experiences homesickness.

ary Fast, age 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Nov.12, 2013, in the Long Term Care Facility in Elk Point, Alta., only hours after her 96th birthday. Mary was born in Swift Current, Sask., and with her husband, Peter, spent nearly 40 years in Latin America with Wycliffe Bible Translators. In the mid-1940s, Mary, Peter and daughter Audrey left for Mexico and then Peru, to begin a lifetime of service to indigenous peoples. They were part of the original group that went to Peru in 1946 with Cameron Mary Fast Townsend, the co-founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Mary taught many to read and write, and mentored them in other practical skills like sewing and basic health care. With her open Bible, she shared her own journey to Christ, always willing to listen to her visitors’ stories, to pray and share with them. During the 1970s the Fasts returned to Canada, where Peter and Mary helped to promote hundreds of literacy and community development projects for indigenous peoples around the world on five continents. In 1998, Mary and Peter moved north with their son, Ken, and his family, settling on an acreage near Derwent. Peter passed away on Nov. 8, 2011. Mary is survived by her daughter Audrey Scholl and her family and her son, Ken, and his family.

❏❏Pray for Kenji’s dad who has stage 4 cancer, and for his mom who is also terminally ill. Kenji’s dad was baptized on Feb. 20, when he was extremely ill. Later his health improved. Pray that he will grow in his saving knowledge of Jesus.

ebo Eltjo Woldringh, 79, passed away on Dec. 5 in Salmon Arm, B.C., after a life well lived. Sebo consistently lived out his faith as a caring, gentle-spoken, and encouraging man. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Sebo attended agricultural college and served in the Royal Dutch Air Force for two years before immigrating to Vancouver, B.C. Sebo Woldringh in 1966. After becoming a Christian two years later, he decided to attend Burrard Inlet Bible Institute to learn more about the Bible. It was there he met Vina, who became his wife in 1970. Sebo and Vina served with Wycliffe in 1983-1984, and later moved to Calgary in 1990 to serve with Wycliffe again for 10 years. Sebo worked in finance and media services at that time. He loved his involvement in the greater picture of reaching Bibleless peoples around the world through literacy and the translation of Scriptures.

The Woldringhs moved to Salmon Arm in 2000, where Sebo spent his remaining years battling Parkinson’s and eventually moved to Picadilly Care Centre in 2007. He is survived by his wife Vina, son Karl and his wife Lori, and two grandchildren, McKenzie and Eli, who were the joy of Sebo’s life.
