Thanksgiving and Entitlement It was one of those words that a person doesn’t hear every day. So, when I first heard it, the word resonated in my head. Entitlement. It was a noun when I first heard of it. It was used to describe what some folks seemed to expect to receive because of who they were or where they had come from. Those who expected to receive entitlements in their lives passionately loved the word. Those who believed that there should be no such thing as an entitlement despised the word. As the years moved on, I found out that the word was not just a noun it could also be used as a “verb” in sentences such as; “I am entitled to that raise!” As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, it would be good for us to take a good look at ourselves and ask what do I feel entitled to? Do you feel entitled to the love and respect of people in your life? Do you feel entitled to special treatment from God? Do you expect that preferential treatment because of all the suffering you’ve done in your life? Do you feel entitled to an education, safety in your neighborhood and health care that someone else pays for? And while we are evaluating our “entitlement quotient,” let us remember the words of the Lutheran Hymnal that tells us that if we examine ourselves, we will see that we deserve (are entitled to) nothing but Sin and Death. Scripture tells us

Da y b y D ay that is what we deserve because of our behavior. However, the Scripture also says that Jesus came into our world to forgive our sins. Our forgiveness cost Him His life. None of us can stand before the throne of God and demand the forgiveness of sins, nor can we stand before Him and declare that we are good people. You see, good people don’t die. If you know you are capable of dying then put aside the notion of entitlement and pick up the notion of Thanksgiving. For Christians, Thanksgiving is a time to remember with Martin Luther that “we are all just beggars.” Any and everything we have is a gift, from the oxygen that gives us life, to the lungs that receive it and use it for our health. Once that truth permeates our minds and hearts, we are humbled and surprised. We are humbled that God sent His son to die for us and that He continues to open His hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing like you and me. We are surprised that God does look upon us with favor and gives us peace. Even our prayer life changes once we move beyond the notion of entitlements. Instead of praying mostly for ourselves, thankful people know that we are just fine, for we are in the hands of our Father, so our focus is on the rest of the world we have been sent to serve. So, in this month of Thanksgiving, let us count the number of times we talk like folks who think they are entitled to certain things, and call upon ourselves to assume the postures of humility and surprise, which lead us immediately to Thanksgiving. Come, you Thankful People, Come!

“For all the saints who from their labors rest.” - William How The first Sunday in November is always All Saints Sunday. On this day, we remember those who have gone before us. God places in human history men and women who have helped shaped the world, the church, our congregation, and us as individuals. God has blessed us richly with mentors and guides. Please take the time to reflect on those who had a hand in your growth, and pause to give thanks. On Sunday, November 6, let us take a few moments to give thanks for those whose shoulders we stand on. If they are still living, why don’t you make it a point to thank them personally.
