AN EVENING TO BE REMEMBERED

"The hearts of the parents shall be turned toward the children and the hearts of the children toward the parents," is a biblical quote which was as truthful as it is poetic on a Friday evening celebrating the twenty second birthday celebration of Israel's Independence. \.

True, there was joy because of the occasion.

But a

very special quality of warmth and affection permeated the service and the celebration that followed.

Parents

and children sang together and danced together and chatted and even quipped with one another.

It was

delightful.

Alan Einstein Edward Grody

We extend our best wishes to the parents and families of our Bar Mitzvah youth. .. .

I think of similar opportunities that are provided here at Temple and are so often wasted, when the so-called generation gap can be literally obliterated for at least an hour or two.

The memories, however, often linger on in

the hearts of parents and in the hearts of children, per haps for a lifetime. Rabbi Z. David Levy SCHEDULE

teachers are professional, fully qualified to teach in secular school, six are certified by the U. A. H. C., and three of these satisfy both categories. We have one guidance counselor, one lawyer, one law school student, a director with the Jewish Welfare Board, one Israeli, one artist, one vocational guidance counselor and several are working towards certification in secular and/or religious school teaching. There are times when our children require extreme patience and understanding. Have you said,"Thank you," to a dedicated teacher lately? Our 6th Graders and several children from other grades saw " Fiddler On The Roof" on May 17th. Many parents were surprised that they reacted so posi tively to the subject. The children were prepared weeks ahead of time for the play. There were discussions in class of Shalom Aleichem, the pogroms, shtetl life, the Jew's personal relationship to God, and they listened to the 'recording of " Fiddler". On May 24th this unit of study will culminate with a "shtetl" party. There will be Jewish foods, the children will be in appropriate dress and some Yiddish will be spoken. Our 9th Graders have enjoyed a most exciting year. They honored their teacher, Mr. Myron Berezin, by asking him to continue their course of study beyond the official school closing date. He not only accepted, bwt offered to do this on a voluntary basis. We are all very grateful. We look forward to welcoming several new members to our Religious School staff: Mr. George Grant, Mr. & Mrs. Marc Staanberg, and Mrs. Alan Kaufman. Mr. Grant is an elementary school teacher in Parsippany with 14 years experience teaching religious school. He will be one of our 5th Grade teachers. Mr. Marc Staan berg comes to us highly recommended by Cantor (Rock He will begin Service) Aronson of Sharey Tefilla. Rutgers Law School this year and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He is very enthusiastic about his 7th Grade assignment. Mrs. Staanberg has just com pleted work on her Master's Degree in History at Rutgers and will be teaching at the Morris County Community College. She will be another one of our 5th Grade teachers. Mrs. Kaufman is a vocational coun selor and working towards her Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She will be our 3rd Grade Hebrew Specialist. We also welcome as office assistants for next year, Marc Ward and Ian Miller. - SWIM PARTY-

COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN NOTE If information about your Temple activities was not included in this month's Bulletin, please understand that we waited anxiously until the deadline - the 13th of the month. We were disappointed not to have heard from you. SUMMER SERVICES

We wish to have our building busy and bustling at any hour of day and evening because we love people. Our library, sanctuary, and rooms are always open. We ask that you not visit the outer office except for business purposes. Our secretary is overworked and overburd ened and wishes to use her limited time to the best advantage. HIGH SCHOOL - COLLEGE MAILING Because we want very much to keep in touch with our young people when they leave for college, we ask that you send to the Temple office (or call in) the name of your youngster who will be attending college next year, the name of their college, and, if known, their new address. Last year Temple B'nai Or Sisterhood sponsor ed two special mailings to our college youth. At Chanukah time they were each sent a small menorah and candles. For Pesach they were each sent a tin of maccaroons. The lovely and numerous thank you notes indicated that this was a very worthwhile and well received project. We want to be sure that all our college students are included in mailings for next year.

At this time there are two openings in the morning session and several in the afternoon session for the 1970-71 school year. The committee is pleased to announce that Mrs. Ruth Lieb will return as Director and Mrs. Helen Bernstein, Mrs. Barbara Boyd, & Mrs. Marilyn Katz as teachers. The men and women who pick table grapes in California and Arizona earn less thim $2,000 a year on the average. Can you imagine raising a family these days ' On an average income of less than $40 per week?

Please don't buy grapes at your fruit stand or supermarket. Please ask other

members of your family and your friends not to buy grapes.

The farm workers are proud people. They do not want charity. They want to work hard picking grapes, but they want a living wage to support their families.

If you see grapes in the store, please protest to the manager. The protections of the National Labor Relations Act are not available to farm workers, as they are to other workers. The grape boycott is our only weapon to convince the vineyard owners that they must treat grape workers as human beings. $40.00 a week is shameful. Millions of Americans are expressing their feelings to the vineyard owners by not buying grapes, by protesting to the managers of stores, and by refusing to buy any groceries in stores which continue to offer grapes from California and Arizona.

PLEASE DON'T BUY CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA GRAPES. Your cooperation in this boycott will force the vineyard owners to pay the pickers a living wage! Thank you for reading this information. UNITED FARM WORKERS, AFL-CIO 703 S. 4th Street, Harrison, New Jersey Phone: (201) 481-3805 or 434-0296
