They are coming! One hundred and fIfty or more Jewish teenagers, 9th to 12th graders from our entire region, are coming to Har Sinai Temple. They will have a wonderful time, and we need your help. Har Sinai Temple is the host congregation for this year's JFTY (Jersey Federation of Temple Youth) Spring Conclave. Our youth group, HSTY (Har Sinai Temple Youth) has been busy for several months now planning for the big event: Spring Conclave, May 7 ·9. The theme for the conclave is Judaism and the Environment. JFTYites, led by our HSTY, will spend the weekend learning about the major issues confronting our environment today and in the future, how we can help to insure a healthy world for future generations, and what our Jewish tradition teaches us about the environment. Following services, a rousing song session will take place in the Sanctuary, followed by an Oneg Shabbat and several programs designed to introduce the conclave theme. On Saturday, JFTYites will, weather permitting, spend the day at the Stony Brook Watershed in Hopewell, New Jersey. The day will include outdoor Services in the fields, and hands-on learning experiences. JFTYites will roll up their sleeves and spend the afternoon working at the Stony Brook Watershed, and the adjacent farmlands.

CONCLAVE

SHAVUOT AND YIZKOR SERVICES

On Saturday evening, a special pro gram for Seniors about Jewish life on college campus is scheduled; fresh men, sophomores and juniors will learn about

Shavuot, the third of our major festivals, will be celebrated on Tuesday evening, May 25, at 8 : 00 p.m. Our services will include Yizkor or memorial prayers. The names of all our dearly departed of the past year will be read. In addition, we will include a Tikun Leil Shavuot, an evening study session, as part of our service.

Jewish high school opportunities spon sored by the UAHC. Following the traditional banquet, an exciting and diverse evening social program is planned. The evening will culminate with "Senior Goodbyes" andHavdalah. On Sunday morning, our by now tired JFTYites will once again return to the Temple for their plenary session and elections for JFTY officers. Our own Karen Reiser, who now serves asJFTY president, will deliver her farewell address and install next year's offic ers. Another Har Sinai member, Matt Dickson, has served this last year as a JFTY Regional Vice-President. Chairing and planning this fabulous weekend are Lauren Edelstein, HSTY President; Karen Welt, HSTY Mem bership VP; and Jason Goldfeder, VP for Religious AffairS/Chaplain. Also working hard on the weekend, and chairing events and programs, are: Peter Sanborn, Stacy Feinstein, Ali Frost and Ted Shatz.

Shavuot, like so many other Jewish holidays, began as an ancient agricultural festival. In biblical times, it marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. As with the other two Jewish "pilgrimage festivals" Pesah and Sukot, Shavuot was distinguished by the bringing of crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Reflecting the original nature of the festival, the Torah refers to it as Chag Hakatzir ( Festival of the Harvest), Yom Habikurim (Day of First Fruits), and Chag Hashavuot, (Festi val of Weeks). Shavuot is also the Festival of the Giving of the Torah. It is customary on Shavuot to read the section of Torah containing the Ten Commandments and the Book of Ruth. (Confirmation is celebrated at this time because our students receive the Torah and make it their personal possession for the rest of their lives.) The Book of Ruth is read on Shavuot for two reasons. First, and most obviously, the story takes place during the summer harvest. Second, the book reminds us of our responsibility to Judaism. If Ruth, a convert, could be so committed to Judaism in spite of many obstacles, we too should find a continual source of blessing in our tradition. Continuing a practice begun by mystics of the sixteenth century, many Jews stay up all night on Shavuot. They read from a special volume containing sections from the beginning and end of every book in the Bible and Mishnah. This custom, Tikun Leil Shavuot, symbolizes commitment to Torah. As part of our service, we will include a special time for the study of a few, selected Jewish texts. Please join us for Shavuot services.

But, we need your help, too! We need your help in several areas: hous ingJFTYites for the weekend (all they need is a floor), transporting the kids to and from the Temple, chaperoning throughout the weekend (we can use help for any time period), preparing and serving meals, and setting up tables and chairs, especially for Satur day evening. If you can help, please call Dan Finkle, our HSTY advisor, at 215/493-19 4 5 , Ariel Perelmutter at 215 1 579- 0628, Nancy Frost at 6 09 1 895-7189, or the rabbi.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTS by Ann Kanarek As we approach Yom HaAtma'ut each year, it is a good time to stress the

centrality of Israel in the life of a Jew. Israel, while it is physically distant from North America, is an integral part of Jewish life here. Our students recognize that Israel is indeed within the realm of their concern and our hope is that the attachment between Israel and our students will grow. The celebration of Yom HaAtma'ut helps OUT students focus on Israel and be reminded of its impor tance in the total scheme of Jewish life. A community celebration, "One Heart, One People," will be held Sunday, May 16, on the occasion of Israel's 45th anniversary. The Principal's Council of the Bureau of Jewish Education and the Jewish Federation of MercerlBucks Counties are sponsoring this event and are hopeful that it will become an annual celebration for our community. We look forward to it as an important activity that will help to serve as a reinforcement of what we have learned throughout the year about Israel. The celebration, is scheduled for Sunday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center of the Delaware Valley, 999 Lower Ferry Road, Ewing, rain or shine. Activities will include relay races, games, face painting, storytelling, dancing and singing. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own blankets, frisbees and sporting equipment. At the end of the activities, we will have a community rally to honor Israel featuring a color guard presentation of the American and Israeli flags, singing the respective national anthems, and live entertainment. Cost for the day is $10 per family of four (single admission is $2 per person), which will include a souvenir give-away of the day and a kosher light brunch. I encourage all our religious school children and families to come and enjoy the festivities. This will take place instead of regular Sunday School classes. The students, families and faculty of Adath Israel Congregation, Ahavath Israel, Brothers of Israel, and FlemingtonJewish Center will come together to join our Har Sinai family and make this a truly wonderful experience and a memorable Israeli Independence Day celebration.

REMINDERS Home Study Group The May meeting of the Home Study group will meet at the home of Janet and Herman Chemak on May 12 at 8:00 p.m. Please call the Chernaks at 609/883-0221 to RSVP and get direc tions.

We are looking forward to your participation.

SPEC ALWAR SAW GHETTO PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

11

The Holocaust/Genocide Resource Center is sponsoring a special photographic exhibit called "A Birthday Trip in Hell-A Day in the Warsaw Ghetto." It will take place at the Trenton City Museum and is open to the public from May 18 -June 27, 1993. This unusual exhibit contains 85 photographs of life in the Warsaw Ghetto and were taken secretly by a German Army Sergeant, Heinz Jost, in September 1941, while he was stationed in Poland. This exhibit was organized by the Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, and premiered at the museum in 1988. It is currently traveling under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution. These photographs, hidden from Jost's family until shortly before his death, show the horrible conditions Jewish residents faced in the fall on 1941.
