Words from the President I want to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year. May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life. Erev Rosh Hashanah Services will be my fourth time addressing you as your President. It is my honor to continue to serve as Temple Sholom's President. I was re-elected for another 2-year term at the Congregational Meeting on Sunday, September 25th. Together with a great Board of Directors, I believe we will continue to provide the

The Board looks forward to once again work with Becky Pierce who was elected as an at-large Board member. Becky has also graciously accepted the responsibility of ensuring we have adequate sustenance at all of our Temple events. She will also continue on as the gift shop maven. Remember to shop at the gift shop. Becky always has it wellstocked. I look forward to once again welcoming Kevin Hale as our Rabbi for High Holiday Services. This will be Kevin's third year with us and it really does feel like he has always been part of our Temple Sholom family. We have many plans for the upcoming year, which I look forward to talking about on Sunday. We have so many exciting things happening at Temple Sholom. I hope you will be able to join us. I will talk about some different types of Friday night 1

programming, in addition to Rabbi Shosh's monthly visits. Please be on the lookout for your dues letter and dues form, which will be going into the mail on Monday the 26th. Also, included in the letter and form will be the schedule of events for the High Holiday Services. They are also here in the bulletin. Please ensure you contact Becky Pierce regarding the food you will be bringing for the various High Holiday Onegs and luncheons, as well as Yom Kippur's break-fast. Sadly, I will not be joining you for Yom Kippur Services. I will be having surgery on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. I will be out of commission for a while and would welcome some visits and meals from the Congregation. It's going to be a very long winter for me, but I will be so much better when I am recovered from the surgery. Meanwhile, L'Shana Tovah!!! Danielle

High Holy Days Tzedakah For the High Holy Days collection we will collect checks and cash for The Community Table. For every dollar we give them they are able to buy $10 of food by buying in bulk. We are also collecting clothing and other soft goods (linens, curtains, blankets and so on) for Easter Seals. They pay us 20 cents per pound for these items in ANY condition (torn, spotted, perfect) and they recycle what they cannot sell. We have raised over $600 so far. We are also collecting hard goods (books, furniture and so on) and they pay us 5 cents per pound. Please keep the two categories separate for weighing purposes. You can bring all of these items to the Temple on the High Holy Days. We will store them until pickup time in the hallway. Contact me if you have questions . --Becky Pierce September Board Meeting Summary September 13, 2016

NEW TEMPLE WEBSITE Most of you know that our Temple website is sadly out-of-date. It has become a source of contention, rather than helping our community for the past couple of years. Hopefully, by the time you read this newsletter the new site will be live. I will post the web address as soon as the site goes live. I have been working on it for the past 3 months and I have finally finished it. I have made all the necessary changes, additions, and updates to the new site. I have worked very hard on it and I look forward to letting everyone know when it is live. There are a few things that need to be done in order to take it live, but it will be done soon. We will be able to send people to the site to learn all about our wonderful Jewish community in the Chippewa Valley. I will ensure it is always up-to-date and searchable. --Danielle Pilkin

The Temple Sholom Board met on September 13, 2016, at Lali Ray’s home. It should be noted that we did not conduct a business meeting in August, due to the lack of a quorum. End of-the-year financial figures for 2015-16 (5776) will be completed this month. Budget figures for 2016-17 (5777) will remain similar to last year’s budget. President Danielle Pilkin will be sending out the yearly dues letter to the congregation next week. (continued next page) Additionally, Danielle will be sending out an e-mail regarding renewal of the Rabbi’s contract. This will be done prior to the congregational meeting on Sunday September 25th at 2:00 p.m. at the Temple. Comments are welcome at that time, or written comments can be sent to anyone on the Board if a member is unable to attend the meeting. 2

Board member Sarah Harless indicated wanting to renew the Friday Night Lights discussions in the near future, as they were very well-received. She also would like to have the Minyan Katan service return soon. Both occasions would then be included in the monthly calendar of events in the newsletter. Hebrew school will be returning as soon as Tom Gugel’s availability has been determined. Classes may move to Sunday morning since the Temple is accessible at that time as it is no longer used by the Mennonite Church. We voted to renew our Temple ad in JONAH’s yearbook again this year. Sue Gordon announced that The Welcome Table, JONAH’s 9th Annual Celebration, will be held on Sunday, October 23rd from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Eau Claire Children’s Theater, 1814 Oxford Avenue. A silent auction will begin at 4:00 p.m. Contact Sue Gordon for tickets. Danielle will be sending out the schedule for High Holiday services soon. As in past years, we are seeking donations for plants on the bimah. Sarah Klenz has agreed to be on the Fund Raising Committee. Becky Pierce will be planning food for the High Holidays. She will also be in charge of kitchen management. Danielle expects to finish updating the website very soon. The Board had put discussion for repairs to the outside of the building on hold. We will discuss it again next month. The next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 7th at 7:00 p.m. Location to be determined. Annual Congregational Meeting September 25, 2016 President Danielle Pilkin called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. A quorum of members was present or had given their voting preferences by e-mail.

We reviewed the year-end financial report. Our fiscal year ended well. However, the budget for the new fiscal year (2016-17/5777) estimated a deficit of around $2,000, mainly due to increased rabbi expenses and the loss of rental income from the Mennonite congregation. The Board does not plan to raise dues at this time; however the forthcoming letter to the congregation will suggest a $50 increase at the various dues levels. Mort Sipress, chairman of the Rabbi Endowment Fund Committee, reported that a minimum amount of $50,000 must be in the Fund before we can use any of income. He also pointed out that $50,000 is only the initial goal. It is likely we will have to have yearly capital drives to continually build the Fund. Money from the income could then be used toward yearly rabbi expenses, our largest budget item. The current balance is $32,091.00. Election of officers: Nominees Danielle Pilkin, President; Veeva Roeming, Secretary; and Becky Pierce, at-large Board member were on the ballot. All three were elected. There were no write-in votes or nominations from the floor. We discussed the schedule for services and other events for the new year. Several new ideas are in the planning stage. Members will be receiving the schedule soon. Becky Pierce has volunteered to oversee all kitchen responsibilities and will make sure we have a good assortment of food items for the potluck dinners and other special gatherings. Tom Gugel, our Israeli student, will once again be teaching Hebrew School, which will be starting very soon. Student fees go toward the Israeli Student Scholarship Fund at the UW-Eau Claire, as well as some of the proceeds from the Purim Fundraiser. In addition to the Purim Fundraiser, we will be planning for the next International Folk Festival at the University next spring. Traditionally held in the fall, the date has been moved to April 30th. We anticipate selling our new Temple cookbook at that time. 3

The Temple continues to collect thrift sale clothes and goods from members that Easter Seals then pays us for. Lastly, the Temple’s new website is going online early next week. Danielle has been working the past several months to get it organized. She will act as webmaster. The address is the same as before: http://www.templesholomwi.org/ The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

I know that making final arrangements is not often foremost on our minds. Nevertheless, if you wish to purchase a gravesite in our Jewish cemetery, feel free to contact me, . --Mort Sipress October Anniversaries 15 Lynne and Roy Vaughn 24 Kirsten and Adam Resnick 28 Marjean and Tom Rude 29 Sheril and Phil Gilberstadt

Veeva Roeming, Secretary Mazal Tov to everyone on their anniversary. Here's to our generous Donors A heartfelt thanks to all who donate. Without you we couldn't do it. Rabbi Endowment Fund: Becky Pierce General Fund: In Memory of Michael Dammen, father of Teva Dekel, by Shelley Fredson, Maury and Bianca Pasternak.

Easy Money. . . is fiction, of course, so remember to take used printer cartridges to One Source on Barstow and give them Temple Sholom's name. Everything will be recycled and a rebate will be given for some items. --Becky Pierce

Holidays are a good time to remember our loved ones with a special donation, as is suggested in the prayers of the Yizkor (Remembrance) service. Be generous, please. Jewish Calendars etc. The new Jewish calendars are now at Temple Sholom, some on the main floor near the front entrance and some on a shelf in the social hall. These calendars are provided to us by Smith Funeral Home in Eau Claire. Smith’s has been providing calendars for us for many years now. We thank them very much for their continuing generosity. Smith Funeral Home is the one funeral home in the area which has familiarity with Jewish customs, including stocking the traditional shroud, the use of a simple wooden casket and the practice of no public display of the deceased.

Caroljean Coventree has offered to assure that we have a minyan. Please consider attending when she 1asks. 9 5 3 Certain prayers, especially when someone 1dies, 8 8 7 on the anniversary of a death and more, can only be recited with a minyan present. Also, we 1957 read Torah only with a minyan. Without a minyan, 1someone 993 often calls to get members to come. We'd 1like 9 9 1 to avoid that.

The featured speaker this year is Rev. Willie E. Brisco of Milwaukee. He is community organizer, Pastor and current president of WISDOM, the Wisconsin organization that JONAH belongs to. Major JONAH concerns this year are Environmental Justice, Economic Justice, supporting EXPO, Ex-prisoners Organizing to support those released from prison. JONAH also initiated the Advancing Hope Fund, a free loan fund for emergencies which has done more than offer money. Some members support loan recipients to attain improved financial literacy, including establishing priorities and opening savings accounts. Much of the money is actually repaid, so it can be recirculated. It is administered by The Salvation Army.
