MARKET TRENDS Rapid and evolving development of the technology in the system, e.g. monofilament yarns have emerged in recent years to compete and sometimes complement yarns based on fibrillated tape. Also, there is continuing development of different solutions for producing infill materials. Greater adoption of the technology by key stakeholders, at the highest levels, e.g. FIFA and UEFA Champions League, and there soon may be national stadiums in Scandinavia with artificial turf. In early stage of development cycle of the fourth generation of artificial turf systems, which means softer, stronger fibers, next generated infill and non‐infill systems Increased market awareness of recycling and desire for recyclability of artificial pitches. Players, families, spectators, club staff and society at large are all increasingly demanding environmentally friendly, sustainable, yet high performance turf solutions. Consolidation of key industry players is taking place, e.g. systems providers such as FieldTurf and Tarkett merged, and yarn maker Ten Cate recently acquired Mattex. Continued globalization of value chain participants, with an increasing number of players seeking both global and local presence. Emergence of increased demand for landscaping artificial grass due to increasingly erratic weather behavior, water scarcity and restrictions on irrigation. This is due to increased demand for drinking water as well as the recent dry spell. It is an important market segment with significantly different performance criteria. There is more emphasis on look, feel and maintenance and less on body‐to‐ surface criteria. Overall, we are facing a rapidly changing market and a rapidly changing game. Kromer Co. ARTIFICIAL TURF SOLUTIONS Landscaping Since the late 1990s, the use of artificial turf has moved rapidly beyond sports fields to residential and commercial landscaping. This trend has been driven primarily by the advanced quality of artificial turf, lower maintenance costs and increased concern for the environment with the emphasis on conserving water. Today, artificial turf is used in many indoor and outdoor residential and public gardens, playground areas, and airports. It is sought after for its natural look, aesthetic appeal and low maintenance care. Artificial turf is particularly suitable when the environment is hostile and arid.

ARTIFICIAL TURF SOLUTIONS Multi‐purpose Today the use of synthetic turf surfaces for multi‐purpose areas is increasingly popular with sports clubs, schools, colleges and local communities. A multi‐ purpose surface is ideal when, for example, there is limited space available or when different sports need to be played on the same pitch. Ideally each sport should be played on specifically designed artificial turf pitches to provide players with the optimal playing and performance characteristics. However, financial considerations, space availability, durability characteristics and player safety criteria will dictate the choice for a multi‐purpose surface. When choosing the multi‐purpose playing surface, one needs to take into account the types of sports that will be played and to what standard, levels of competition and frequency of use. The surface characteristics of the pitch will normally be dictated by the principal sports activity that will be played on the artificial surface.

ARTIFICIAL TURF SOLUTIONS Market Overview In 2006, the global market for artificial turf was 71 million square meters with Europe having around 33 million square meters – the biggest single market. North America is presently 16 million square meters but double figure growth rates are forecasted. The rest of the world, most notably China, is also experiencing high levels of growth, and experts predict the global market will soon exceed 100 million square meters.

INDUSTRY INFORMATION A New Generation of Synthetic Turf Synthetic turf was introduced to much fanfare in the 1960s, but it was not until the early 1980s when a vastly improved second generation product gained widespread popularity. Then in the late 1990s, an infilled synthetic turf system was introduced that duplicated the look and playability of lush grass, and is the basis for the ever‐ evolving systems of today. With significant enhancements in appearance, performance, drainage, durability, quality and safety, the synthetic turf market is now booming in its three major segments: athletic fields, landscaping and golf. Synthetic turf manufacturers and installers do not announce publically the square footage of the turf they manufacture or install, or their annual revenues. Nevertheless, AMI Consulting publishes an annual report on the synthetic turf market, which it sells at a substantial cost on its website, http://www.amiplastics.com/, under Market Expertise (Specialist Markets). Why the Growth? There are several factors contributing to the increased demand for synthetic turf, including significantly improved safety, playability, and appearance since its introduction. Other factors include: Proliferation of multi use athletic fields, with durability a key factor in increased utilization; Growing demand for synthetic turf in residential and commercial landscape, golf, municipal parks, airports, highway medians, and many other applications; Lower annual operating and maintenance costs; Favorable environmental aspects ‐ eliminating water usage, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, and utilizing recycled auto tires for the infill; Extension of the playing seasons for all sports, and the ability to use the surface in all weather conditions. The Numbers About 7,000 synthetic turf sports fields are in use in the United States; In 2011, about 25 million square feet of synthetic grass for landscape was installed. In 2011, nearly 1,000 synthetic turf fields were installed in North American schools, colleges, parks and professional sports stadiums. In contrast, just 400 fields were installed in 2003. Kromer Co. G‐MAX TESTING
How‐To do it and tools Who should do it in‐house vs. External Service Frequency & Pattern
Kromer Co. LLC ‐ 1.800.373.0337 ‐ www.kromerco.com
Why is Gmax Testing Important? Gmax testing measures the shock absorption of synthetic turf. The results indicate how much shock an athlete absorbs when impacting the turf. As the Gmax value increases, the field becomes harder, and is less likely to absorb the shock of your athlete. These measurements are a fundamental tool for field safety, limiting injuries, and useful in alerting you to de‐compact the field or add additional infill.
Gmax Testing Gmax values increase with high usage, compaction, and infill segregation. These values can be reduced by grooming or top dressing your field. For optimum synthetic turf playing field performance, fields should have Gmax results between 120 and 145. It’s best to have your field tested once a year by a provider that is in compliance with the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Kromer Co.
