FIRST IMPRESSIONS When you meet a new person for the first time, you take about three seconds to form an opinion. So how can you make a good first impression? Obviously your clothes are very important and can say a lot about your personality. Alberto is fifteen. He has got some more suggestions: ‘When I speak to someone for the first time, I always look at them when I talk. I don’t stare, of course, but it’s important to have eye contact. I also smile a lot. I’m a naturally friendly person and I’m not shy, so I don’t find it difficult to relax and smile. You know there’s an expression, “Smile and the world smiles with you”? I think it’s true. It’s important to show interest in the other person. Show that you’re curious and ask them some questions about themselves. Don’t forget to give some information about yourself – it isn’t an interview! At the beginning of the conversation I try to joke a bit. A sense of humour really helps to connect with someone. What do I talk about? There isn’t a list of correct things to say, but it’s important to be positive.’

27. Read the text. Then answer the questions. Remember to use full sentences. I HOPE YOU DIDN’T MISS … TOP SONG: THE FINAL Channel 5

Tuesday 8 p.m.

Last night’s highlight was the final of Top Song. In my opinion the final was as exciting as last year’s final – perhaps even better. This week the final three contestants had to sing a disco song and a slow ballad. Lil sang first. She was very nervous and when she was singing her second song, she suddenly forgot the words. But Lil is a determined woman and she started the song again. The judges loved it and said very positive things. Simon was the next contestant. Simon was working as a teacher when he saw the first series of Top Song. He was in the bottom three last week, but the viewers voted for him. Last night the situation was incredibly stressful and he didn’t sing very well. The final contestant was Erika. Erika complained last week because she thought the judges were really strict. She was

feeling a bit lonely and wanted to visit her family, but the judges didn’t allow her to go. Her disco song was OK, but her slow ballad was fantastic. Who won? Watch it online and find out!

A GUIDE TO SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT We all want to reduce our impact on the environment, but we don’t want to make extreme changes to our everyday life. What practical things can we do which will make a difference? Here are five ideas: a Cars, motorcycles and planes all cause a lot of pollution. Try to walk or cycle. If your journey is longer, use public transport, such as the bus or the train. b We throw away a lot of items which we can use again. Did you know that one tin can save enough energy to power a television for three hours? c We throw away a third of all the food we buy. At least half of the food which we throw away is fresh and we could eat it. This creates greenhouse gases – and costs money. d Buy things which don’t have a lot of packaging. Governments are trying to make supermarkets reduce their packaging, but the progress is slow. e Rubbish in the streets looks horrible, but it is also an environmental problem. 56. Read the text. Then answer the questions. Use full sentences! THE LATEST WEBCAM FROM FUMIX Fumix have created a new version of their popular webcam. It’s like the old model, but a bit better. They’ve improved a number of features. This new model also sits at the top of your computer screen, but it’s much smaller than the old one, so you almost don’t know it’s there. You can use it with any computer because you just attach it to a flat surface. They’ve also reduced the price. The old model cost €125, but this new version only costs €99. This market is becoming very competitive and companies recognize that customers are looking for good value as well as top quality – and they have a big choice. And very importantly, the picture quality is excellent. It’s perfect for chatting online with your friends. They’ve obviously listened carefully to their customers. I sent some comments to them last year about the old model. The biggest problem for me was the picture quality – the picture was a bit dark. People who I met online thought I had dark hair, but I’m actually blond! You can buy it online from the Fumix website or you can find it in the big electrical shops.

TITANIC The best-selling film ever is Titanic. It made $1.8 billion and it was a big international hit. It won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The production of the film was very expensive. James Cameron was a producer and editor. He used computergenerated images to create the dramatic moments when the ship disappeared under the water. The film tells the story of two members of different social classes who fall in love on the ship. Rose is a seventeenyear-old rich girl. She’s going to America to marry Cal Hockley. She doesn’t want to marry Cal. On the ship she meets Jack Dawson, a third-class passenger. The ship sinks and Jack dies. The two main characters and the central love story are fictional, but some of the people in the film are real historical people. The film ends with Rose in bed. Rose is now an old lady. Next to her bed there are pictures. In the pictures she is doing everything she said she would do with Jack during her life. The final scene from the film is the young Rose with Jack on the Titanic.
