Summer tournament a huge success!

Page 1 Tournament Committee Message

The Whitchurch Sports annual tournament in August was a great success by any measure. Hundreds of young people and supporters enjoyed the matches and atmosphere. The tournament reinforced the good reputation of Whitchurch Sports and it raised a significant amount of money that will allow the [Date] club to continue to support the teams.

These profits were a club record and this is in thanks to all the helpers who provided their time in a huge variety of areas, many of which go unnoticed. A massive THANK YOU to all those involved in planning, car parking, refereeing, tent pitching, bbq’ing, serving refreshments, litter-picking, running the control tent and all the other tasks that are needed to make the tournament so successful. A good number of parents responded to the plea for help and this is essential to the smooth running of the tournament. As always, we were short of helpers for some of the weekend – if you didn’t help this year then please ensure you can help next year. The tournament raises around £40 for every one of our registered players and without this source of income we would have to organise other fundraising and/or increase the fees. Please don’t depend upon others to raise funds for your team – make a note of next year’s date now and let’s make sure that the help is spread evenly across all parents. 2014 Tournament – Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August 2014

The tournament photographers DE Photo have a vast library of photos available for purchase that were taken during the tournament weekend. There are many great shots of Whitchurch teams and players. The direct link to the Tournament library can be found on their website www.dephoto.biz in the “find my photo’s” section.

The Officers, Managers and Coaches of Whitchurch Sports JFC would like to wish all players and parents a successful and enjoyable season. Although success can be easily measured in trophies and tournament wins, our foremost wish has always been the continued enjoyment and friendships that our children can gain through youth sport. As eager as we all are to win we should always strive to ensure that our children enjoy their football and we do not burden them with demands to succeed at the cost of their enjoyment.

Players and family members of the Girl’s Section took part in a sponsored bike ride on the 14th September in order to raise money for new club raincoats. The ride started at the Bird in Hand pub in Saltford. All participants then cycled to Bath and back again. A fabulous afternoon was had by all on the 9 mile round trip

Further to previous newsletters we can confirm the purchase of a new Mitre Ultimatch match ball for each of the teams in the club. Once more we would like to thank all those who kindly contributed their tokens for our cause at Asda Whitchurch

Whitchurch Sports U11's (now Under 12’s) went to Frampton Rangers tournament on 22 June in the blistering heat and came away winners. In temperatures that reached 30 degrees Whitchurch topped their group and only conceded 1 goal throughout the day. After winning our group we progressed into the semi finals where the competition really hotted up! (excuse the pun) The hosts Frampton were our opponents and were very determined to win their home tournament. In a pulsating game where Frampton started strong but faded, Whitchurch grew stronger the longer the game went on and it was no surprise when a Pierce Hartnett golden goal strike in extra time put us through to the Final. Bradley Stoke Utd, who had impressed all day, awaited us in the final. Once again the game went to extra time, where the teams could not be separated. Again Whitchurch were tight at the back and had enough chances to win with a notable strike from Corey Kingdon which hit the bar. And so to penalties. The tension mounted as we told the boys we needed 3 penalty takers. Immediately Pierce, Harvey Tilley & Corey Kingdon bravely put themselves forward. With keeper Ashton Rowe having had a quiet day, his defence giving very few chances all day, it was his chance to become a goalkeeping hero. Bradley Stoke took the 1st penalty, which Ashton heroically saved. He also got his hands to their 2nd penalty which then went in off the inside of the post. With Pierce and Harvey making no mistake in dispatching their spot kicks it came down to the nerveless Corey to win the tournament. Corey confidently struck the ball giving the keeper no chance and as the net bugled the Whitchurch players, parents and proud coaches Jon & Trev all celebrated.

The Under 10 Sports section took part in a sponsored walk from Pensford back to South Bristol Sports Centre on the 6th October 2013. On what felt like the last day of summer, the intriped band of kids, coaches and parents left Pensford (without even taking prior refreshments at the Rising Sun) and ventured North. With the sun on our backs and a spring in our feet (avoiding the cowpats) we made good time in heading toward Norton Marleward. From there we headed to Whitchurch village and again bravely bypassed the Black Lion and continued leg weary to the Whitchurch Cycle Track. “Pats” of different origin then became the main danger and all thoughts (at least the adults) turned towards the replacement of essential salts and sugars in order to “rehydrate” oneself adequately and quickly. Upon arrival at base camp the kids continued to run around and the adults slumped exhausted, with barely the energy to raise a toast to themselves. A great day was had by all involved. 5

A wonderful nights musical entertainment for WSJFC was provided by local band Levi Valentino on the 20th September at the Bristol Sports Centre. Superb covers of hits from UK and international bands & artists were performed with Levi’s usual expertise and energy. All those present had a great time, and towards the end the drink and excellent music allowed some at least to “throw some shapes” on the dance floor. Levi Valentino perform locally within Bristol and are well worth catching should you get the opportunity. Details of the band and their forthcoming events can be found on facebook or via their website levivalentino.com.

We have been reminded by the Avon Youth & Hanham Minor Leagues that dogs should not be present pitch side during matches. Although we would like to believe that no dog would be out of control if it belonged to any of our parents, and none of their little habits would be left behind, we have to be seen to be upholding their rules. As much as it pains us to say it, can we request that you do not bring dogs to league matches or training sessions. Thank you for your understanding

From time to time at previous club meetings the topic of a WSJFC Golf Day has often been raised, and then unfortunately forgotten. If you would be keen to attend and play in such an event please register an interest by emailing Wayne Kirby at [email protected]. For the time being at least we are just looking to see what kind of numbers could be attracted A date, venue and likely cost would all be communicated in due course. 6

We are please to announce that the club has a new website. Our new website can be found at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/whitchurchjfc. The website has been obtained through the website suppliers Pitchero and offers us far more options then our previous websites. Each squad has their own page as before, but administrators can now use it directly for the uploading of photos, match reports, match and training times, contact details, news and statistics. Please be aware however that we can’t publish match results for the age groups below under 10, this being an FA requirement. Details of team fixtures and results can now all be found more easily than before. A club membership now runs via the website. It is possible in the Club Membership page to apply for supporter, club member, player, parent, coach or staff status, each allowing certain viewing or updating rights. We are able to post news updates directly on to the website which we hope will allow us to better interact with all members of the club. We hope that future events such as the tournament and club events can be better advertised from using the website. The new website we hope will provide us with the ideal vehicle to create more of a “club feel” and will enable not only the club to better correspond with it’s members, but also it’s members to better correspond with officers of the club. It’s still early days for the website. Any assistance you can offer to your team Manager in updating your page will we are sure be gratefully received. The more we put into the website, the more we all will be able to get out of it. We very much hope that you find the website useful and enjoyable. Any comments or suggestions concerning not only the website but the club in general are always welcome. The contact form on the website can be used to correspond with the club directly on such matters. Regards Whitchurch Sports Junior Football Club
