SUCCESS CELEBRATED AT AWARDS NIGHT

Wiebke- Road Race champion.

Ryan- Outstanding Cycling Achievement. Rob- Most Improved rider.

A highly enjoyable Annual Awards evening was held at Tatworth village hall with County Councillor Jill Shortland OBE as guest of honour and presenting the trophies. Wiebke Rietz, our star lady rider, took the Road Race champions trophy for amassing an incredible 343 ranking points on her way to reaching Elite racer status. Ranked 17 in the country, Wiebke is the only Elite in the South-West and is indeed the SW regional champion. Ryan White was awarded the Mayor’s Plate for Outstanding Cycling Achievement. He finished fourth in BC’s national rankings, won 24 races and is the current U13 National Schools champion. After winning his first race only last May, Rob Hogg has had a meteoric rise to prominence in Under 16 racing. Rob recorded 11 wins and was the SW most improved rider. He is already a cat3 racer after winning a cat 4 race by lapping every rider except 2nd place! For his sustained and impressive development Rob was honoured as “Most Improved Rider”. Both Rob and Ryan have another year racing in their respective age categories, so we’re all hoping for great things in 2013.

No. 6

Hare Lane To Castle Neroche

START OS GRID REF. 314 153 FINISH OS GRID REF. 273 157 LENGTH 4.4 KILOMETRES. AVERAGE GRADIENT (WHOLE HILL) IS 1:20 AVE. GRADIENT (HARE TO CASTLE NEROCHE 2.1 KM) IS 1:13 STEEPEST GRADIENT (THROUGH DOMMETT 1KM ) IS 1:7 Starting at the crossroads above Broadway, this climb commences with a gentle rise and dip before the more serious work starts. This hill, a favourite of Wiebke and Nigel, then begins to climb through Hare towards Dommett and the tough, steep section through narrow lanes.

View from Hare Lane over the Blackdown Hills.

Higher Hare Farm.

After climbing through Dommett and some sunken lanes, the road climbs to more open hill top terrain/ lower hedges and a big right hand corner. You then see the crest but it’s a false summit as there is another 0.75 Km of steady up hill pedal work to Castle Neroche. (Some excellent downhill MTB paths here- maybe an article on this next time!). Fantastic views from the upper parts of this climb over the Blackdown Hills Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. BEWARE! Agricultural vehicles/ hay lorries etc regularly use these lanes as Nigel can testify!
