Succeed Training Self and Peer Assessment in Succeed

Succeed Training Self and Peer Assessment in Succeed What is Self and Peer Assessment? Self Assessments allow students to evaluate their own work. They can be a useful tool as a reflective exercise, asking the student to consider the strengths and weaknesses of their submitted work and how they may improve on it next time around. Having to think about where marks might be awarded by the person marking the piece also helps students understand how better to construct their work. Peer Assessment is generally accepted to be the evaluation of work by other students on the same course. Again, involving students in the marking process helps to give them an understanding of how work is marked and what skills they need to develop in constructing an argument or writing clearly, but care needs to be taken as students’ may have non-academic reasons for wanting to mark their peers in a particular way. Peer Assessment may work in a number of ways other than individuals marking other students’ work. Students may also be divided into groups and one group may peer assess the work of another group. Or the tutor may award an overall grade to the group (for example, 68%) and then allow the groups to peer assess the contributions of each member of the group (so in this example some may have contributed more, a fact recognised by all the group, in which case they may give one of their group a higher grade than 68%, knowing that some others in the group will have to lose marks accordingly, in line with their lesser contribution).

Tools for Peer Assessment There are many tools available to implement Peer Assessment. As well as the tool in Succeed, explained in this guide, WebPA (http://www.webpaproject.com/) is an open source product developed from a JISC project which allows students doing group work to mark each other’s contributions. Students allocate marks within a group using a number of criteria (often derived by the students themselves). Its core purpose is to let a tutor give a grade to a piece of group work and then use WebPA to allow the students to allocate those marks amongst themselves. PeerMark, part of the TurnitinUK package, allows tutors to distribute submitted assignments to other students so they may be marked by their peers, anonymously if required, using a pre-determined set of review questions. If you would like some help determining which of these Peer Assessment tools is best for you, please contact your eLD representative, details are on the IS web site: http://www.stir.ac.uk/is/staff/about/teams/aldt/.

Self and Peer Assessment in Succeed Self Assessment and Peer Assessment tools are available for use in Succeed. Self Assessments allow students to assess their own work and Peer Assessments allow student submissions to be reviewed and graded by their peers in the same module.

Figure 3 – Selecting Self and Peer Assessment from the Create Assessment menu

5. The Create Self and Peer Assessment form is displayed. 6. Under section 1, select Import to import a previously created assessment, otherwise select New to create a new self and peer assessment. These instructions focus on creating a new self and peer assessment, so New should be selected (as shown in Figure 4).

Figure 4 - Selecting New

7. Under section 2, in the Name field type a name for the assessment. Instructions may be entered in the Instructions field. Figure 5 shows an example of this.

Figure 5 - An example title and set of instructions

8. Under the Instructions, select the Submission Dates using the date and time options (Figure 6). This is the time window during which students are required to submit the work they wish to enter for peer review.

Figure 6 - Setting the Submission dates

9. In section 3, Self and Peer Evaluation Options, set the dates for the evaluation to take place. This is the time window during which students will self-evaluate their work or peer evaluate the work submitted by others. The Evaluation Dates must commence after the Submission Dates have ended. Figure 7 shows an example of this. Students then login during the Evaluation Dates window and review and grade other students’ submissions.

Figure 7 - Setting the Evaluation Dates

10. Alongside Allow Anonymous Evaluation select Yes or No. Anonymous evaluation hides the names of both the submitters of the work being evaluated and the name of those evaluating it. Figure 8 shows Yes having been selected in this example. 11. Alongside Allow Self Evaluation select Yes or No to decide whether to allow students to evaluate their own work or not. Figure 8 shows No having been selected in this example. 12. Alongside Show Evaluation Results to Submitter select Yes or No to decide whether to show the evaluation results to the person submitting the original work. Evaluation results can be shown optionally to the user who submitted the assessment, but if the evaluation is anonymous, submitters will not see evaluators' names. Figure 8 shows Yes having been selected in this example. 13. Alongside Number of Submissions to Evaluate type in the text box the number of submissions that each evaluator should evaluate. Submissions will be distributed among evaluators, based on this number. If this assessment is only for self-evaluation, enter 0 in the text box. Figure 8 shows 2 having been entered in this example.

14. In section 4 of the form, Due Date, enter the final due date and time for the assessment using the date and time options. This is the date and time by which all students will have completed their evaluations and so must be set at least equal to or after the evaluation period has ended (Figure 9).

Figure 9 - Setting the Due Date

15. In section 5 of the form, Options, alongside Make the Assessment Available select Yes or No to make the assessment available students from now or not. The default option is Yes, though you may change this to No if you wish to come back and make further edits to the assessment prior to releasing it. Figure 10 shows Yes having been selected. 16. Select whether to Track number of views or not. Figure 10 shows No having been selected. 17. Alongside Choose date restrictions select whether to limit the availability of the assessment by date. This is different from the date settings earlier in the form. This setting merely restricts the time window in which students will be able to see the link to this assessment. It’s not imperative to set this at all, if you have set the dates for submission and evaluation then this will suffice, but if you wish to hide the link until the time that the submission period starts, for example, then you can do this here. Figure 10 shows the date restrictions having been left unchecked. This will make the assessment visible to students at all times, though they obviously will not be able to submit anything until the Submission Dates period starts.

This is optional, though may be used to provide an example of an exemplary response. The model response can be made available at any time, but in all cases it will only be visible during the evaluation process, after the submission process has ended, so students will not be able to copy it when composing their work. 23. Click the Submit button. The Question is created. Page 6 of 16
