Dear Community Friend: Family Service of the Piedmont is the largest private nonprofit agency serving children and families in Guilford County. Last year, our programs touched the lives of 22,000 children and adults. Our mission is to empower individuals and families to restore hope, achieve stability, and thrive. To this end, our agency provides victim services, family support services, individual and family counseling, consumer credit counseling, and community education programs. The signature fundraising event for Family Service in Greensboro is our annual Oyster Roast. We are excited that 2013 marks the 10th Anniversary Oyster Roast, presented by VF, to be held Friday April 12th 2013 at the beautiful Irving Park home of David and Liz Johnson, 700 Country Club Drive, Greensboro. The Band of Oz will perform live beach music at the event. Oysters and a dinner buffet will be provided by Pepper Moon Catering. Our Honorary Chair is Rebecca Schlosser, founder of the Greensboro Oyster Roast and chair of the very first event in 2004. In your giving plan for 2013, we hope you will consider being a Sponsor for the Oyster Roast. Your funding of this highly popular event will enable Family Service to continue building safe and healthy families and strong communities locally. Up to 1,000 people are expected to attend the event itself. Greensboro Oyster Roast Breaks All Records The 2012 Greensboro Oyster Roast brought a crowd of 1,000 people to the home of The Honorable Aldona Wos and Mr. Louis DeJoy on April 27 for a fabulous night of great food, music and entertainment. A joint venture between Family Service’s Greensboro Foundation and The Guild of Family Service of Greensboro, this year’s Oyster Roast featured food by The Painted Plate and music from The Magnificents. The event presented by New Breed Logistics surpassed all previous agency expectations in terms of attendance, popularity, and fundraising success. The Oyster Roast netted proceeds of more than $175,000 to help support programs of Family Service in Greensboro. Chairs Dixie Culver and Phyllis Lancaster were quick to recognize the influence of past Oyster Roasts, as well as the additional efforts put in by this year’s supporters. “The venue was fundamental in making this a success,” said Culver. “Our Home Hosts were very hands-on, community oriented, and contributed much in both funds and fundraising skills. They went above and beyond what we could have ever asked. At the same time, last year’s Oyster Roast was so successful and well attended, everyone was excited to come back this year. Each year our committees and chairs have grown the event to where we are today. “ The Chairs also thanked Honorary Chair Kay Stern, Family Service and Greensboro Foundation Boards, and the hard-working Oyster Roast Committee made up of Guild members and volunteers from the community. “These ladies were ready to help at all times, with fundraising, signage, flowers, and so on,” Culver said. “It was amazing how helpful the committee was in getting everything together.” 200 couples and individuals from the Greensboro Community supported the event as Hosts. 125 more individuals and businesses were sponsors, including Platinum Sponsors Pace Communications, The Halstead Foundation, Kay Stern (Honorary Chair), VF Corporation, and Wells Fargo. Greensboro Oyster Roast : Biggest and Best Ever The Greensboro Oyster Roast on April 29 wasn’t just a terrific party; it was the largest and most successful fundraiser Family Service of the Piedmont has ever had. A record turnout of 720 guests enjoyed the food, music and festivities at Bonnie and Bynum Hunter’s home. Around the large tents provided by Grand Rental Station, attendees ate oysters on the lawn and other edibles from Pepper Moon Catering, enjoyed the company of friends around the beautiful candlelit swimming pool, shopped for jewelry on display by Schiffman’s (who donated a portion of their sales all that weekend) or danced the night away to the music of The Magnificents. The event surpassed all expectations and raised proceeds of more than $141,000 to support programs of Family Service in Greensboro. Oyster Roast Co-Chairs Kim Holleman and Daniela Helms thanked the Hunters for playing host to the event. “The Oyster Roast was successful because Bonnie and Bynum Hunter so generously shared their beautiful property – the pool, gazebo, paved areas and lawn,” Helms said. “The location was a big part of our success,” agreed Holleman. “Another was the wonderful level of corporate sponsorship – we had so many people

willing to go the sponsor route.” Holleman particularly thanked honorary chair Shirley Spears for her part in helping to marshal support. “We are so grateful to Shirley. Her involvement was key to our incredible level of success this year,” she said. “We were so fortunate to have a dedicated group leading our fundraising efforts, not to mention the generosity of our donors especially during a tough economy,” added Helms. In particular, Grand Rental Station who donated the tents and furnishings. “They really helped create an attractive and high-quality feel to the evening,” she noted. The seventh annual Oyster Roast was organized by a large and dedicated volunteer committee including members of The Guild of Family Service of Greensboro, and chaired by Laura Gasiorek and Clay Smith. The event was record-breaking in terms of attendance as well as number of hosts and sponsors, and most importantly the amount of money it raised: a staggering $76,000.00 to help fund programs of Family Service of the Piedmont in Greensboro.

Other raffle prizes included a guitar signed by James Taylor, and a gift certificate for Tyler White Gallery. Guild members Karen Armstrong and Carol McKenzie organized raffle ticket sales, aided by members of The Junior Guild of Family Service. After the Oyster Roast, Schiffman’s continued their support by donating a portion of proceeds from sales of Slane & Slane jewelry made throughout April. Together, the Schiffman’s donation and raffle proceeds contributed almost $4,000.00 to the event.

Clara House in Greensboro and Carpenter House in High Point offer safety to women and children escaping violent homes. Women receive help filing protective orders and navigating the court system, individual and group counseling, and referrals to resources to help them start a new life free from violence.

The Greensboro CAC (Children’s Advocacy Center) and Hope House (High Point’s CAC) coordinate forensic examination, counseling and treatment of child sexual and physical abuse. Healthy Start prevents child abuse and neglect by providing in-home counseling and parenting education to pregnant women and new parents with high risk factors.

• Last year, we served more than 4,000 victims of domestic violence, rape, and other violent crime. • Our 24-Hour Crisis Line received, on average, one crisis call every two and a half hours. • 89% of women who stayed at our shelters for ten days went home to a safe, non-violent living environment. • 99% of male batterers who completed DVIP (Domestic Violence Intervention Program) were not re-arrested for Assault on a Female after one year.

• Last year our CAC’s served 310 children – an average of six abused children a week and a 46% increase over the year before.

• The CAC’s goal of reducing children’s trauma by requiring them to describe their ordeal one time only, is achieved in 99% of cases.

• Healthy Start served more than 300 at-risk families. • 96% of those families did not experience DSS reports of abuse or neglect.

Counseling for children, adolescents, and adults with issues such as depression, anxiety, physical/sexual abuse, substance abuse, grief or trauma. Walk-in counseling clinics allow clients to begin seeing a therapist the same day. An integrated care model addresses clients’ general healthcare as well as mental health needs. EAP (Employee Assistance Program) contracts with local companies.

Nationally-accredited CCCS (Consumer Credit Counseling Service) offers money management, budget review and an action plan to resolve financial problems, pre- and post-purchase homeownership counseling, and reverse mortgage counseling. Mortgage Payment Program helps out of work homeowners qualify for interest free loans to maintain their mortgage.

About Our Agency Family Service of the Piedmont, Inc. Family Service of the Piedmont is the largest private nonprofit agency serving children and families in Guilford County. Each year, the agency serves more than 20,000 people through its programs and community education.

Areas of Service Counseling—Family Service offers individual, family and group counseling for children and adults experiencing life's stumbling blocks— including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, marital problems, behavioral issues, grief and trauma. The agency's Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) provides free budget, credit and housing counseling, debt management programs, and bankruptcy and foreclosure mitigation for individuals and families struggling with financial worries. Victim Services—The agency provides a 24-Hour Crisis Line and a victim advocate program for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and other violent crime. Clara House in Greensboro and Carpenter House in High Point offer a temporary residence, along with a host of other services, for women and children escaping domestic violence. Family Service also offers therapy groups for male and female perpetrators of domestic violence. The agency operates two fully accredited Children’s Advocacy Centers which coordinate the investigation and treatment of child sexual abuse. Harmony House provides supervised visitation of children in families with a history of domestic violence. Family Support Services—Family Service seeks to prevent child abuse and neglect by conducting parenting classes, coordinating in-home support for new parents with heightened stress factors, and providing family preservation services for families in danger of having their children removed from the home. Community Education—The agency offers community empowering opportunities through resident councils, leadership training and neighborhood building activities. CCCS conducts free money and credit workshops throughout the year. FSP staff advocates for issues central to its mission and services— such as domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse—through community awareness events and speaking engagements.

About Our Foundations Family Service of the Piedmont is the product of two agencies—Family Service of High Point (est. 1940) and Family & Children's Service of Greater Greensboro (est. 1945) that affiliated in 1999. Today, fundraising support and management of physical assets in the two cities are entrusted locally to two Boards of Trustees, Family Service of High Point Foundation, Inc. and Family Service of Greensboro Foundation, Inc.

Family Service of the Piedmont Menu of Services and Programs VICTIM SERVICES Crisis Line for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault—24-hour phone assistance for victims. Crossroads—a collection of group programs for women and children victims of domestic violence. Group includes support/psycho-education groups for women victims of domestic violence and play therapy groups for their children. Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP)—a yearlong education group for male batterers with topics including male privilege, power and control, belief systems and their impact on violent behavior. Shelters for battered women and their children—Clara House (GSO) and Carpenter House (HP) provide residents access to a host of services to help them find a permanent safe living environment. Victim Advocate Program—offers support and guidance to victims of violent crime, such as sexual assault and domestic violence. The program provides crisis intervention, information and referral, court preparation and accompaniment, assistance with filing victims' compensation and counseling. Women’s Domestic Violence Intervention Program (WDVIP)—a women-only program that addresses issues of violence in women’s lives by focusing on issues of accountability and responsibility for violent behavior and understanding the negative effects of violence on her intimate relations and children. Harmony House—provides separated families with a safe, child-friendly environment for supervised visitations and exchanges.

COUNSELING SERVICES Anger Management Group—a program offered in Greensboro for male and female offenders involved with the Day Reporting Center who express verbal anger, hostility and aggressive behavior towards others. Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC)—provide a safe, neutral and child-friendly environment within which to conduct the investigation, coordination and treatment of victims of child sexual abuse, physical abuse, or witness to violence. Trained forensic interviewers speak with victims for the purpose of investigations and court proceedings, and child victim advocates connect the children and their families to counseling and other resources for recovery. Family Service operates a CAC in High Point, called Hope House, and in Greensboro. Employee Assistance Program (EAP)—a worksite-based program designed to assist employees and their dependents, through time limited employer-sponsored services, in the identification and resolution of personal concerns that may adversely affect job productivity. This is achieved by providing strength to families through clinical intervention, advocacy, and enrichment education. Individual & Family Counseling & Specialized Child Abuse Services—individual or family counseling for children, adolescents, and adults for issues, such as depression, anxiety, family stress, physical/sexual abuse and other victimization, family dysfunction, grief and marital problems. Parenting Children Through Divorce—educational workshop for parents that focuses on the needs of children during separation and divorce (High Point only). Strategic Treatment and Restructuring (STAR)—parenting skills group for parents or parenting couples who are involved with DSS or court system due to child maltreatment issues. Topics including parenting skills, childhood development, and cognitive behavioral restructuring. Substance Abuse Services—comprehensive outpatient services for adults with substance abuse issues. CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELING SERVICES (CCCS) Bankruptcy Counseling and Education—CCCS has been approved to issue certificates in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code. This includes pre-filing counseling and post-filing education required by bankruptcy laws. Budget and Housing Counseling—money management, budget review and development of a written action plan with a nationally certified consumer credit counselor to help solve specific individual financial problems. Counselors also provide pre- and post-purchase homeownership counseling, default resolution counseling (to prevent foreclosures) and reverse mortgage counseling. Budgeting, Money Management and Credit Workshops—CCCS offers a host of workshops addressing budgeting, maintaining your credit, credit basics for homeownership, money management, financial first aid for the recently unemployed and other related topics. Workshops range from one to 10 sessions. Debt Management Program—allows people with a high level of debt to consolidate and repay consumer debt to creditors, and rebuild positive credit ratings. Home Protection Program—a state-funded program that helps recently unemployed people save their home by offering them an interest-free loan while they go back to school or search for a job. CCCS administers this program in Guilford and Caswell Counties. Keys to Home Ownership Workshop—half-day workshop open to public. Topics include budgeting, credit, lenders, realtors, home inspections, closing process and insurance.

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES Fairview Family Resource Center (FFRC)—a community-based program designed to strengthen individuals and families by providing supportive services and activities to help them function more effectively, foster a sense of self-sufficiency and empowerment, and provide a safe and healthy environment for children. Family Preservation Program (Intensive)—intensive four week program that works with families 10 to 20 hours per week and is designed to help families prevent unnecessary placement of their children out of the home. The service is intensive, home-based, all families are referred through DSS and works on the crisis in the family that could have resulted in a child being removed from the home. Family Preservation Program (Less Intensive)—for families, referred through DSS, with one or more children ages birth to 17 years who are at risk for current or future role dysfunction that could lead to outof-home placement. Risk factors include lack of effective parenting, family disruption/instability, substance abuse, abuse and/or neglect, court/law involvement, low income, developmental disabilities, and family violence. Family Preservation - Reunification Services (Together Again)—community-based program designed to help families, referred through DSS, reunite after a child has been placed out of the home. Together Again therapist provides services to parents/caretakers, foster parents, and the child(ren) that have been removed. The therapist also coordinates and supervises visitation if appropriate and court approved. Healthy Start—child abuse prevention program that provides pregnant women and parents of infants with high stress factors home-based support for nurturing their baby’s growth and development,as well as connections to other community resources that can help improve the quality of life for the entire family. In-home therapy is offered to clients who are engaged in the program. Thriving at Three (Claremont Expansion)—Located at the Claremont Resource Center, Thriving at Three Community Coordinator assists Claremont families in preparing their children for entry into school by age five, and increasing knowledge and links to available community resources.

Family Service of the Piedmont served more than 16,500 children and adults last year. As well as serving a high number of clients in crisis, our programs consistently perform with high effectiveness at addressing these issues.
