LECTURE SERIES 2016 (CONT.) Tuesdays 3:00 - 4:30 PM

TUESDAY, MARCH 22 WORLD WALKABOUT Cliff Roles In the course of the last three years photographer Cliff Roles set himself the challenge of exploring as much of the world as he could. On his whirlwind travels he traveled simply — backpack with camera in hand, ready to focus his lens and lend his eye to regions far and wide. So far he has covered 15 countries in southern and southeastern Europe, the continent of Australia, New Zealand, Cuba, China, and Hong Kong. Cliff will enchant you with his photographic journeys showing breathtaking photos accompanied by witty commentary as he describes his discoveries of cultures, food and world history. He will bring some copies of his newest coffee table book Walkabout Europe for optional purchase and signing. LS12

Cliff Roles, photographer, is well known in Sarasota for his society photography. He can be seen taking photos at all the arts and cultural events and fundraisers in town. He is author of the recently published coffee table book Walkabout Europe, a book of photos from his extensive European travel. A native of the United Kingdom, he lived in Germany for 28 years, 16 of which were spent promoting pop and rock luminaries, including Elton John, Bon Jovi, and Celine Dion. Cliff is an award-winning actor and radio show host and was also ringmaster of Circus Sarasota in 2006 and 2007. Registration is required for all lectures. Call (941) 383-8811. FRANK LOESSER & WALT DISNEY: Characters That Last NEW Susan Benjamin Frank Loesser has been called the most versatile of all American composers. No one can forget the songs he wrote for characters such as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, J Pierrepoint Finch in How to Succeed in Business…, or Hans Christian Anderson. He wrote memorable music for larger-than-life characters and, in his personal life, sometimes displayed larger-than-life behaviors. Walt Disney’s vision led to a whole new genre — the musical cartoon as a full-length movie. Walt also created screen images that still spark the imagination: from Mickey Mouse to Snow White to Mary Poppins. This series explores the character traits and personal forces that led to Frank Loesser’s writing over 700 songs and Walt Disney’s building the Disney empire. SF3

MUSIC THROUGH THE DECADES David S. Polansky In this fun-filled hour and a half you will learn how the last hundred-plus years of American and world history have influenced the great American Song Book. Using keyboard, trumpet, and vocals, David brings alive the music of George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin, Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, and a host of others. These are songs inspired by the Gay Nineties, the advent of the automobile, World War I, the Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, WW II, Big Band, Atomic Age, Swing Eras, Broadway and the Wild West. David will take questions, perform requests, tell anecdotes about famous musicians as well as some about his own life as a musician, and “wow” you with his legendary Louis Armstrong impersonation. David S. Polansky, a career musician, has played with Sandler and Young, Phyllis Diller, Henny Youngman, Ray Bolger, Arthur Fiedler, The Platters, The Coasters… the list goes on and on. David holds degrees in psychology and music education, taught in colleges and public schools, and has appeared as guest lecturer at education conferences throughout the country. He has written extensively for musical theater, symphony orchestras, and small ensembles. 11:00 am-12:30 One session

UNCLE SAM’S ORCHESTRA — THE STORY OF THE SEVENTH US ARMY SYMPHONY Edward Alley and June LeBell At the age of 22, Edward Alley became the conductor of the illustrious Seventh US Army Symphony Orchestra, a 75-piece classical ensemble that played only for the citizens of Western Europe to prove that America had talent. How he got to that podium, following in the footsteps of such great conductors as the founder Samuel Adler, Henry Lewis, Kenneth Schermerhorn, and Ling Tung, is a fascinating story. Known as “Uncle Sam’s Orchestra,” this orchestra existed for only 10 years between the Korean and Vietnamese Wars, and consisted of draftees from Juilliard, Curtis and other major conservatories. Told with music and photos, Edward’s story will unfold as he is interviewed by June LeBell in a session that will be unforgettable. Edward Alley was the music director of the legendary 7th US Army Symphony Orchestra in Europe, and principal conductor of the Boris Goldovsky Opera. A manager of the New York Philharmonic, he was chair of the Sarasota Orchestra’s Conductor Search Committee and has served on several arts boards in Sarasota. June LeBell, a former singer, was the first female staff announcer at a major commercial classical music radio station, and in thirty years at WQXR, garnered numerous awards for outstanding broadcasts. She continues to interview the world’s greatest musicians, lectures from NYC and Sarasota to Santa Fe, and hosts “June LeBell’s Musical Conversations,” a one-hour talk and music program heard twice a week on Public Radio’s WSMR. 11:00 am-12:30 One session

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE, NUDE VICTORIANS, THE WILD WILD WEST, AND THE ORIGINS OF MOTION PICTURES Dave Gordon Renowned photographer, inventor, and admitted murderer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), is a character seemingly out of a Hollywood fantasy. His strange story intertwines technology, adventure, and social upheaval. Born in England, he first came to prominence in the midst of the turmoil of the California Gold Rush. Later at the height of the Victorian era he was able to convince the University of Pennsylvania not only to let him take hundreds of nude photos, often of its students and faculty, but to distribute the photos to libraries and universities throughout the Western World. His work revolutionized photography, led to the development of motion pictures and transformed art. David Gordon will shed light on this brilliant and bizarre adventurer, who serves as a window into a time of revolutionary technological and social change, helping us to gain perspective on our own rapidly evolving, increasingly technological society.
