McCracken’s run should never be forgotten Like pirates on the ancient seas, the McCracken County Lady Mustang softball team walked into Jack C. Fisher Park on each day of the 2016 KHSAA State Softball Tournament – hoisting its large black flag through the crowds. Emblazoned on the furls of cloth – a large crimson “M” – and often the one carrying it was a senior. Hannah Ridolfi. Madeline Wooten. Bailey Vick. KK Telfair. Jenny Chapman. Audrey Dodd. Tori Humphrey. They all took turns holding it. How fitting it was that the spine of McCracken softball – the upperclassmen – be the ones responsible to bear its

biggest symbol: a flag that waived on the back of the dugout, and struck fear into those who witnessed it. Edward The Lady Marlowe M u s t a n g s ’ Paducah Sun chances to repeat as state champions took its first big hit on the opening night of the tournament, when Male’s Bayleigh Masterson launched a two-run cannonball right into the hull of McCracken’s

vaunted battleship. With each passing inning, the situation became more and more dire. 11 runners left on base. No timely two-out hits. Eventually, it was a 3-1 loss. The dust on the field hadn’t even cleared when the whispers started churning. The Lady Mustangs would have to win eight games in a row over a 48-hour span in order to stake claim to the biggest treasure in state softball. Impossible. Unfathomable. Unlikely. Never been done before. And it’s true. Never in the history of the doubleelimination format had a team

clamored up the consolation bracket and forced a winnertake-all championship game. But with a senior-laden crew and some sharp first mates in Abby Shoulders, Kalli Harris, Karlie Hatton and Lindsey Carroll, McCracken County’s ship slowly began to take on less water. On Friday, Chapman snookered Estill County with a nohitter through six innings. Ridolfi pickpocketed Highlands with a 6-2 win. Dodd made East Jessamine walk the plank in a 10-0 demolition, striking out 12 along the way. By Friday night, it seemed certain the Lady Mustangs

would face the dread-pirate Male Lady Bulldogs, who already had damaged their pristine ship once before. Shoulders brought her own cannon to the fray, firing down a game-changing run at home while tacking on five RBI. Dodd and Ridolfi exchanged salvos in the circle, and the Lady Mustangs would live to see another day. But the reward for staving elimination? Another early start on Saturday – this time at 9 a.m. – with games coming every two hours until a champion was crowned. Please see MUSTANGS | 2B

Murray State men’s basketball to face Ole Miss Dec. 15 BY EDWARD MARLOWE [email protected]

Golden State Warriors forward Harrison Barnes (from left) center Festus Ezeli and guard Stephen Curry sit on the bench during the second half of Monday’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Oakland, Calif. The Cavaliers won 112-97, spoiling the Warriors attempt to clinch the title.

Warriors remain confident of winning another title BY JANIE MCCAULEY Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. — Stephen Curry sat on the bench and buried his head in his hand. Fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson wrapped a towel around his face. This was misery for the Warriors and their fired-up fans, who made for the exits early during Monday’s 112-97 NBA Finals loss to the Cavaliers that sent the series back to Cleveland for a Game 6 on Thursday night. They wanted so badly to do it for Draymond Green, do it for each other, and for their home crowd this time. Instead, Golden State is going to Ohio again. One flight the Warriors surely would have preferred not to take at

this road-weary stage of another extra-long season, but it will be well worth it if they hoist a second straight trophy when these NBA Finals finally end. Their “Strength in Numbers” mantra was tested once more in a game that mattered so much. The Warriors lost at home for only the second time this postseason and fourth overall. Yet there’s no panic now for the defending champions after LeBron James and the Cavs forced at least one more game in what has become quite the testy rematch. The Warriors lead the series 3-2 and still have the upper hand. “We’re all disappointed. We want to win,” guard Shaun Livingston said. “With the stakes

being what they are right now, obviously it’s a gut punch. But it’s the finals. It’s not going to be easy. They’re not going to lay down. It doesn’t matter who’s on the court. We’ve got to play.” Golden State will get a boost having emotional leader and All-Star forward Green back after he sat out Game 5 serving a suspension for a Game 4 swipe at James’ groin. Fans chanted “Free Dray-mond! Free Dray-mond!” and large cutouts of his face waved from all corners of Oracle Arena as he watched from a baseball suite next door in the Oakland Coliseum. “You want to win here more than anything for your fans. Fister leads way against Cardinals BY R.B. FALLSTROM Associated Press

ST. LOUIS — The Houston Astros have won nine straight with Doug Fister on the mound. The right-hander did more than his part in this one. Fister pitched effectively into the eighth inning and gave his team breathing room with a two-run single in the seventh in a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. “We always talk about it being fun for a pitcher to hit, but I really take it seriously,” Fister said. “Sure, it felt good.” Colby Rasmus hit his 150th career homer in his first game back in St. Louis since 2011. “It was a feeling I’ve felt before and it was a good feeling,

and now I’m on the other side of the coin, but it’s all good,” said Rasmus, a former St. Louis first-round draft pick. “I just wanted to come out and be myself and enjoy the moment, not get too caught up in this or that.” Fister had been 0 for 2 on the season before hitting the first pitch from reliever Seung Hwan Oh up the middle to put the Astros ahead by three in the seventh. The Cardinals had been anticipating a pinch-hitter. “Who knew their pitcher was going to come up and put together the kind of at-bat nobody else in the league has really been able to against Oh all season?” manager Mike Matheny said. “He doesn’t put it

up on a tee for anybody.” Matt Adams and Brandon Moss homered for the Cardinals, whose season-best fivegame winning streak ended. They totaled just five hits off Fister and three relievers. Fister (7-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 71/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, to win his sixth consecutive decision. “I don’t even typically know those things,” Fister said. “I look at it day to day and know our guys are going out there fighting.” The hit was Fister’s first since Aug. 14, 2015, and gave the pitcher four career RBIs. His last RBI came in 2013, for Please see FISTER | 2B

Murray State men’s basketball will be making a nonconference stop in Oxford, Mississippi, in the 2016-17 season. University of Mississippi officials released details Tuesday morning of a matchup between the Racers and the Rebels, set for Dec. 15 at The Pavilion. Murray State is 3-2 against Mississippi, having last played the SEC foe in 2010 – a 77-61 loss under former head coach Billy Kennedy. The two schools first faced off in 1959. Ole Miss finished 20-12 last season, including a 12-2 record at home and 10-8 in the SEC. A loss to Alabama in the conference tournament ended its year. Though an unofficial schedule has yet to be released, Murray State’s nonconference slate is starting to take shape. Road matchups against Middle Tennessee, South Dakota State, Evansville and Southern Illinois have also been pinpointed

for the upcoming season. W h i l e Evansville, SIU and MTSU are often common opponents, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits are a unique foe. The Jackrabbits last played Murray State in the now-defunct ESPN Bracketbusters’ Challenge during the 2012-13 season and featured two future NBAers in point guards Isaiah Canaan and Nate Wolters. This is the second-consecutive season the Racers will face an SEC opponent while on the road. In 201516, Murray State traveled to Athens, Georgia, for a tangle with the Bulldogs. The Racers fell 63-52. It is believed Murray State officials are still trying to locate an opponent for a home game in the non-conference schedule. A potential nonconference tournament, most likely for three games, has also not been announced.

Day feeling ‘stressed’ ahead of U.S. Open BY JIM LITKE Associated Press

OAKMONT, Pa, — Jason Day picked a funny way to put the rest of the field on notice. Less than 48 hours before the start of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer said, “I’ve never been more stressed in my life than right now.” Judging by the overheated headlines about his health in some golf outlets recently, you’d think Day was in a fight for his life. In truth, he’s simply shaking off a cold he likely caught from his father-in-law two weeks ago. That kind of scrutiny, as well as the stress, is part of the rarefied spot Day holds in the game at the moment. “People ask me how I feel, I usually tell them how I feel, and that’s just me being honest,” he added a moment later. “I’m not trying to make any excuses this week.” Good thing, too, since alibis will be tough to come by for the 28-year-old Australian. It’s not just that Day hits the ball straight and high and

has been putting like a pool hustler for the better part of a year — requisites for any U.S. Open setup. On top of that, he’s been arguably the hottest golfer at the U.S. Open over the last five years. Last July, even battling a case of vertigo that caused him to collapse at the end of his second round, Day managed to bring home a secondplace finish at Chambers Bay. “Obviously, I was kind of struggling there,” he recalled. “Funny enough, I end up shooting 68 on Saturday and kind of folding myself into a tied lead for the last day. It didn’t work out my way on the last day, kind of pushed it a little bit too much. But, yeah, it was great. It was a good experience for me to really understand how far I can push myself.” The payoff for that lesson wasn’t long in coming. After holding a share of the 54-hole lead at that Open, as well as at the British Open a month later, Day finally cashed one in at the PGA Championship the month after that. Titans open minicamp with thud from RB Henry BY TERESA M. WALKER Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The crack of rookie Derrick Henry’s helmet smashing off Quinton Spain’s head gear echoed across the Titans’ practice field, leaving the left guard chuckling when asked about the collision with the Heisman Trophy winner. Playing offense with the running back, Spain shouldn’t be getting in Henry’s way, and the collision left the left guard feeling bad for his teammates on defense since he certainly didn’t slow down the 6-foot-3 rookie. “When he hit me, I felt it and he kept running,” Spain said in the locker room after Tuesday’s practice. The Tennessee Titans hit the field for the first of their three-day minicamp with the team

opening the doors to invited season-ticket holders, grilling up hot dogs and handing out chips and drinks. At least 500 fans turned out on a morning where the temperature felt like 101 degrees before a thunderstorm ended the session a few minutes early. Jeremy Rutherford, 30, of nearby Brentwood, Tennessee, wanted to check out the team’s new additions at running back in both Henry and DeMarco Murray in person. “It gives you a personal touch with the team,” Rutherford said of the invite from a team that is 5-27 the past two seasons and working hard to woo ticket buyers. For Mike Mularkey in his first offseason as Tennessee’s head coach, giving some fans access Tuesday and Wednesday offers his Titans the chance to work in front

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau (left) greets defensive end Mehdi Abdesmad during Tuesday’s practice in Nashville, Tenn. of people before training camp opened. The trade-off is an adrenaline boost for players and the chance to show off what they’ve been working on. “I wanted to give the

crowd a good show,” Mularkey said. The best part of Tuesday may have been what fans didn’t see. Mularkey had charted 115 penalties through 10 OTA sessions

caught by both the three officials he’s had throwing flags at practices and by coaches checking film later. The penalties included 46 false starts, 32 offsides and a number of illegal formations, which the coach noted aren’t affected by an opponent. On Tuesday, Mularkey said the Titans only committed two penalties, so that meant the offending unit only had to do pushups twice. Adding pushups as a penalty Mularkey suggested Tuesday morning with a twist. The person who commits a penalty stands and watches his teammates drop to the ground as a reminder of how he affects the rest of the team. “Whether that was a direct influence on the outcome, I know standing there if I’m looking at everybody else doing them, it certainly would send a message to me,”

Mularkey said. The Titans still are busy trying to improve their offensive line to both better protect quarterback Marcus Mariota and open holes for Murray and Henry. This competition is expected to go into August, but Spain, an undrafted rookie out of West Virginia, is still working with the firstteam at left guard where he started the final seven games last season. The rest of that group Tuesday featured left tackle Taylor Lewan, free agent signee Ben Jones at center, Chance Warmack at right guard and rookie Jack Conklin at right tackle. Conklin has moved up to the first-team line after veteran Byron Bell dislocated his left ankle, and Mularkey said the eighth overall draft selection out of Michigan State has quietly done his job.

Cowboys’ McFadden breaks elbow IRVING, Texas — Darren McFadden fractured his right elbow trying to keep his new iPhone from hitting the ground and cracking. The Dallas running back is likely to miss the start of training camp as a result, and fourth overall pick Ezekiel Elliott is that much closer to starting. McFadden’s injury happened at home over Memorial Day weekend, and he missed the next voluntary practice that was open to reporters. But he returned to workouts last week, eventually telling trainers that the elbow was still bothering him. The fracture showed up on X-rays as part of the physical before mandatory minicamp that started Tuesday, the same day of surgery for the Cowboys’ leading rusher in 2015. Coach Jason Garrett said McFadden would miss “at least a couple of months,” and training camp in California starts in late July. The Cowboys hope to have him ready for the season opener. — Associated Press

Sharapova appeals doping case to CAS LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Maria Sharapova has appealed her two-year doping ban to the highest court in sports, seeking a ruling ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says Sharapova is seeking to overturn or reduce the suspension imposed by the International Tennis Federation last week after the Russian tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January. CAS says both sides agreed to an “expedited procedure” and the court would issue its ruling by July 18. That would mean that, if the suspension is thrown out, Sharapova could compete at the Rio Games. CAS says it hasn’t decided whether to hold a hearing or not. — Associated Press

Detroit. The Astros’ 6-7-8 hitters were a combined 6 for 7 against Jaime Garcia (4-6). Rasmus also singled, Carlos Gomez singled and scored twice and Marwin Gonzalez singled and doubled with an RBI. Fister retired 14 straight after Adams homered leading off the second, a streak that ended on Moss’ 15th homer in the sixth that cut the Astros’ lead to 3-2. Moss, among five left-handed hitters in the lineup, has four homers in his last seven

games. “If you hit, the at-bats will be there,” Moss said. Garcia has lost four of his last five decisions. The lefty is 2-6 with a 6.15 ERA in 10 career starts against Houston, the last victory coming in 2012, and his initial assessment of the latest one was “terrible.” “Everybody needs encouragement, I don’t care who you are,” Matheny said. “But he shouldn’t doubt the kind of pitcher he can be. When he’s right he can be as good as anybody in the game.”

ly enough, he ranked the final round of his breakthrough first major at Whistling Straits last August as the previously “most stressful” juncture of his golfing career. And he’s not banking on it being any easier on Oakmont’s punishing layout. “We got tough rough. The greens are tough. Practically the whole course is tough,” he said. “When you’re in stressful situations like you are at U.S. Opens ... you may as well not even tee it up that week because you probably won’t play good, anyways,” Day added. “That’s just one less person you have to worry about at the end of the week.” Despite that description, Day has a soft spot for the course. His agent, Bud Martin, lives nearby and he played Oakmont for the first time at 18. “Almost feels like home,” he said, though Day could say the same about most U.S. Open venues. “When I was a kid, I’d hit it everywhere ... and when I hit it everywhere, I had a short game to save me. I needed to — if I didn’t have a short game, I would shoot over par, and I’d play bad. If I had my short game, I’d shoot under par somehow, even though I was hitting in the trees and hitting it everywhere. BAD BACK, GOOD OMEN? — Justin Rose called his recovery from back problems just in time to play the U.S. Open a “race against the clock.” But the time away from the game — Rose missed two events struggling with a disk flare-up — could prove a blessing in disguise. “I’ve done everything humanly possible to be here from a recovery point of view, from a fitness point of view, from a practice point of view, but there’s no doubt my practice schedule has certainly been on the light side.”

MUSTANGS CONTINUED FROM 1B

And with 90-degree temperatures, unbearable heat indexes and no wind, McCracken’s route was hardly paved with good intentions. And yet, the Lady Mustangs, somehow, endured. To avoid heat exhaustion (a land “scurvy” of sorts), players were downing Pedialyte by the gallons, shoveling down vitamin-rich slices of cantaloupe and drinking large amounts of water. Smudged eye-black, suntan lotion and dark sunglasses (similar to eye patches) kept the team protected on the field. At night, it was rejuvenating ice baths, hot tub visits and laps in a warm hotel pool. As the Lady Mustangs continued to navigate uncharted waters in the tournament, it was pure talent guiding the way. Smart base running, two RBI from Vick and another strong outing from Dodd pushed the ship past Daviess County. Madisonville-North Hopkins, a “manxome” foe with some “snickersnack,” forced extras before Dodd, Telfair, Humphrey, Harris and Carroll sunk the Lady

Maroons in the 10th. By this moment, a dead-heat in the middle of the afternoon, the Lady Mustangs looked war-torn. Several batters were jumping up and down in the on-deck circle, undoubtedly battling muscle cramps and joint pain. Writhing, some players softly cried in the dugout – too proud, too strong to quit, but too tired to truly endure another daunting sortie behind enemy lines. Scott County, unblemished on their trip through the winner’s bracket, crested on the championship horizon – already having lost to McCracken twice in the regular season. The Lady Mustangs would make sure of a third, somehow finding the wherewithal to gut out a 4-2 win. Like an ancient Siren, Chapman danced around 13 baserunners with a devastating curveball. Harris and Shoulders added clutch RBIs, and McCracken would generally look like the sharper, smoother club. It seemed like McCracken’s marauders would find their dubloons early in game two, when Vick doubled

to lead off and Wooten thwarted a pot-shot to right with a nice snag at first. But one final cannonball – a bases-clearing double from Hannah Davis – was followed with a host of infield miscues, no doubt the wear of 48 hours bearing down on tired, seaworn shoulders. And yet, the Lady Mustangs failed to abandon ship. Taking on water from every angle, McCracken trailed 9-5 heading into its last stand and put up two more runs before tournament MVP Kennedy Sullivan forced Carroll to pop out. A second-place finish in the 2016 KHSAA State Softball Tournament may never be truly respected or honored in any fashion, but know this: I will never forget your run through Hell. With every reason to quit – the heat, the pressure, the time – you didn’t. You fought more for one goal than most will fight in a lifetime. Your tears, filled mostly with electrolytes, tell the story of how bad you truly wanted it. You were brazen naval warriors, captivating and inspiring to the last.

day, with each scoring 41 points. Not that the alwaysconfident Warriors are overly concerned. They are a group that bounced back from every rare loss during a record-setting, 73-win regular season. Golden State is 14-1 fol-

lowing a defeat. “We’re in the same place we were last year, up 3-2 heading back to Cleveland. If you told me this before the series, I would have taken it,” coach Steve Kerr said. “So we’re in a good spot.”

They deserve to see us win, but you just suck it up and move on,” Thompson said. “We’re still in a great position.” While Green returns for Game 6, the Warriors might be down big

man Andrew Bogut. The 7-foot center sprained his left knee early in the third quarter Monday and was scheduled for an MRI exam Tuesday before the team traveled. Bogut has been an imposing presence with his shot-blocking abil-

ity, but the Warriors have some depth at the position and often use a center-by-committee approach with Festus Ezeli and Marreese Speights among others like Anderson Varejao getting regular opportunities to contribute.

“If there’s a chance he’s out Thursday, our bigs are just going to have to step up. Been doing it all year,” Thompson said. Defensively, the Warriors must find a way to keep James and Kyrie Irving from going off the way they did Mon-

Horoscopes WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2016 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Take advantage of any time you get to spend with someone special to you. The conversations or interaction you have will change the way you move forward. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You will get what you ask for. Pay attention to details and you will exceed expectations. A professional or financial gain is possible, but don’t spend money before you have received what’s owed to you. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Look for signs to guide you in one direction or another.

Once you make up your mind, make your choices clear to avoid any interference. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Look for a unique way to present what you have to offer. It’s OK to be different, and doing so will help you capture interest that can make your life easier. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Consider what you can contribute to something or someone you believe in. You can bring about change if you feel passionate about a cause, concern or belief. Taking control will lead to new opportunities.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Keep a close watch on the way others respond. Someone will take advantage of you if you aren’t careful. An opportunity to learn will present itself. Don’t rely on others for information. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Look outside your normal surroundings and you will discover a new way to deal with old problems. Business trips will help you see what needs to be done in order to advance. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Donate possessions you no longer need, or have a garage sale to bring in extra

cash. Use your imagination and you will find an innovative way to market something you enjoy. Keep your emotions hidden and personal matters a secret. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Concentrate on stabilizing your relationships with others. Bring about changes that will keep the peace and give you leeway to work at something that makes you happy. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Close deals, complete projects and make plans to spend time with family or friends. Your downtime will give you the break you need

to regenerate and will provide the incentive to invest in something that will free up more time. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don’t let peer pressure stop you from heading in a direction that appeals to you. Bringing about change may not please everyone, but it will give you the boost you need to do your own thing. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Look for alternatives rather than giving in to someone who is offering you a poor deal. Someone who has advised you in the past will be able to help you out again.
