Resilient Racers keeping conference streak alive BY EDWARD MARLOWE [email protected]

Three games into the conference slate, Murray State head coach Jeremy Groves is praising the resiliency of his women’s soccer squad. After hanging on for a 3-2 win over Morehead State last week, the Racers (3-42, 2-0-1 Ohio Valley Conference) fittingly went 110 minutes with preseason No. 2 Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau last Friday and finished with a 2-2 tie, as forward Taylor Richerson scored the equalizer with less than a minute to play. Murray State then followed up a 44-foul festival with the Redhawks by grinding out a 2-1 win over the Skyhawks in Martin on Sunday, as 2015 OVC Offensive Player of the Year Harriet Withers scored her sixth goal of the season with Nyomi Devine adding the other. The 2-0-1 conference start for the Racers keeps a 15-game winning streak

against the Ohio Valley intact, making the target all that much bigger for a team lunging for a second consecutive title. But the way in which these first three games have unfolded have told Groves something about his team. “We’re just making sure the players have belief and confidence in themselves,” he said. “Early on in the season, we’ve beat our players up in training and try to get that mentality of ‘never say die,’ ‘don’t quit’ and ‘you’ve always got to fight’ with the stuff that we do in practice. “I think our leadership group is really starting to come through. It was hard early on because we had injuries and things weren’t going well, and now all of a sudden it’s starting to blossom a little bit.” Against Morehead State, the Racers held a 2-0 lead before back-to-back goals over the top knotted the game. But with less than two minutes to go, it was sophomore Cori Cain finding the

net for the game-winner — bailing out Withers off the right side with a surge of speed up the middle. At SEMO, the Racers held a precarious 1-0 lead well into the second half before Natasha Minor and Esmeralda Gonzales scored in the 72nd and 75th minutes, respectively, for a 2-1 advantage. Instead of panic, however, the Racers crashed the goal and Richerson pushed through a rebound with 34 seconds remaining in regulation to breathe life back into the streak. Sunday at Martin, it was the Racers pushing out to a 2-0 advantage and clamping down in the second half before holding on for a 2-1 win — something Groves noted was impressive after Friday’s gauntlet. “I think we’re just starting to get a little bit of our toughness back,” Groves TRENT SINGER | Southeast Missourian said. “(Sunday) was the Murray State’s Cori Cain (2) works for the ball during last Friday’s 2-2 same, where we defended tie against Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau. Vols unsure of top linebackers BY STEVE MEGARGEE Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee is unsure about the status of its two top linebackers as it prepares to visit Texas A&M in a matchup of undefeated teams. Darrin Kirkland Jr. has missed three straight games with a high ankle sprain. Jalen Reeves-Maybin missed the entirety of a 34-31 triumph at Georgia last week after sitting out the majority of victories over Ohio and Florida . That means No. 9 Tennessee (5-0, 2-0 SEC) again could be missing some of its best defensive performers when the Volunteers face

Jones said Kirkland ran Thursday and Friday, and the team planned to put him through cutting drills Monday “to see if he can match the movements that the linebacker position brings about, different bursts and accelerations.” Jones said cornerback Justin Martin should be available this weekend after serving a suspension last week for a violation of team rules. He also said running back Jalen Hurd will be “full go” this week and available to play against Texas A&M after missing portions of the Geor-

Mularkey sees improvement in Titans NASHVILLE, Tenn. — It’s deja vu all over again for the Tennessee Titans, who are starting out 1-3 for a third straight season and fourth in the past five years. Even with a new coach, they are struggling to clean up penalties and turnovers that have cost them in back-to-back losses. The latest mistakes cost special teams coordinator Bobby April his job on Monday, a day after his unit gave up 10 points in a 27-20 loss at Houston.

Titans fire special teams coordinator Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans fired special teams coordinator Bobby April on Monday, a day after they allowed a 67-yard punt return for the winning touchdown in a 2720 loss to the Houston Texans. Titans coach Mike Mularkey announced the firing a day after special teams were responsible for giving up 10 points to Houston. Special teams assistant Steve Hoffman will take

over April’s duties. Hoffman has been on the Titans’ coaching staff since 2013 and has 26 years of special teams experience with a number of NFL teams. The Titans and Texans were tied 20-all Sunday before Houston’s Will Fuller scored on a punt return in the final minute of the third quarter. Earlier in the game, the Texans got a field goal on a drive that was kept alive when Tennessee was called for 12 men on the field while Houston

was in punt formation. Titans punter Brett Kern took the blame for a bad punt with little hang time leading to the touchdown. “They had a wall set up to go to the other side of the field,” Kern said. “They just outflanked us, and they were able to get on their blocks a little quicker when there’s not hang time. I’ll take 100 percent of the blame.” Tennessee also got lucky with officials ordering a redo on fourth down after the Texans

apparently blocked a punt. Mularkey hired April after being given the head coaching job in January. This was April’s 25th season in the NFL after also working for the Jets, Oakland, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Rams, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. The Titans currently rank 11th in kick return average but next to last in the NFL in defending kickoffs and 27th on punt return coverage.

streak intact, helping the Vikings (4-0) lead from start to finish after falling behind in each of their first three wins. Beckham, who has yet to score this season, was smothered by cornerback Xavier Rhodes and had 23 yards on three catches. Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard were quiet, too, and Manning was erratic as ever while finishing 25 for 45 for just 261 yards. Rhodes picked him off in the third quarter, the 15th interception for Manning in eight career starts against the Vikings. He’s 2-6 with only five touchdown passes. Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon each ran for a touchdown as the Vikings rushed for a season-high 104 yards. Bradford went 26 for 36 for 262 yards. The Vikings, who have allowed only 50 points in four games, have an NFL-best turnover margin of plus-10. The Giants (2-2) dropped to minus-8 for the season.

Mondays With Moss Former Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss, at the game as an analyst for ESPN, blew the ceremonial Gjallarhorn prior to kickoff to get the crowd going early. Fifteen years ago, Moss caught three touch-

down passes on a Monday night game as the Vikings beat the Giants 28-16.

Struggling Secondary The Giants defensive backs are so depleted by injuries that wide receivers were playing safety in practice this week. Andrew Adams, promoted from the practice squad last week, started at safety for Nat Berhe. Trevin Wade started at cornerback for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and struggled all game.

Walsh, Wide Left Blair Walsh’s 46-yard field goal attempt failed early in the third quarter, already his fifth miss (three field goals, two extra points) of the season. The interception by Rhodes gave him the chance to make a 44-yarder less than 3½ minutes later.

Injury Update Giants TE Larry Donnell (concussion) was blown off his feet in the second quarter by blitzing Vikings LB Anthony Barr and quickly ruled out for the rest of the game. Donnell was obviously woozy as he walked slowly to the sideline. Vikings RT Andre Smith (right elbow) was hurt in the first quarter and was replaced by Jeremiah Sirles.

gia game for what was described as a “lower extremity injury.” The Aggies also have been dealing with injuries. Texas A&M beat South Carolina 24-13 last week without four injured starters, including SEC sacks leader Myles Garrett. The other Aggies to miss the game were offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and receivers Speedy Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones. Texas A&M didn’t have a media availability Monday, so there was no update on the foursome’s status for this week’s game. Tennessee thus far has withstood all the injuries on defense thanks largely to the performance of its front four. The deep defensive line has played its best late in games to help the Vols outscore opponents 76-21 in the fourth quarter and overtime. “We’re going to need our defensive front to be that way each and every week,” Jones said. The defensive line has benefited from being the healthiest element of Tennessee’s defense, with the only notable injury being an ankle problem that sidelined end LaTroy Lewis against

Ohio. Tennessee knew even before the season its defensive line would be a strength. “Before all the injuries, that’s what our goal was before the season started, to be a D-line-led team,’ defensive tackle Kendal Vickers said. “When the pressure’s on, we want it to be on our shoulders.” That defensive line is led by Derek Barnett, who has recorded two sacks in each of Tennessee’s last two games. Barnett sacked Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason and forced a fumble that defensive end Corey Vereen recovered in the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter last week. But the injuries across the defense have made a difference, particularly in the secondary. Tennessee has allowed four pass completions of at least 40 yards the last two weeks. The Vols yielded just one pass completion of 40-plus yards in the three games that Sutton played. Tennessee’s secondary could face an even tougher challenge Saturday against a talented Texas A&M receiving corps, particularly if Seals-Jones and Noil are healthy enough to play.

leads Murray State with 398 yards receiving and 28 catches. He accounts for six of Humphries’ eight touchdowns on the season, including three this past weekend in Clarksville, Tennessee. After setting career highs of seven catches, 104 yards and two touchdowns in a bitter 28-22 loss against Missouri State in Week 2, Gandy only continued to surge — going for three and 106 with a score in a loss to Southern Illinois before being quieted for three catches and 5 yards in a one-point loss to Southeast Missouri State. But against the Govs he was back to old antics. He picked up two leaping touchdowns in single coverage and snagged a deep 50/50 ball for a 22-yard gain that eventually led to a Humphries rushing touchdown and a 31-10 spread late in the third quarter. For two years, Gandy had to languish behind a deep and talented mix at wideout. But according to MSU head coach Mitch Stewart, the Athens, Alabama, native is making the most of an opportunity at the position. “Even in the spring, if you remember, we came out and he didn’t get to do a lot because he messed his hamstring up,” Stewart said. “And

it was like ‘Golly, he just can’t get over that hump and take this spot over.’ “Finally he’s got the chance, and he’s making the most out of his opportunity. He’s kind of become our big play guy because he is a bigger receiver, and he can go up and get some contested balls.” Gandy has come up on the positive end of several deep shots downfield early this season, but on Saturday he took three consecutive empty screens that eventually led to a touchdown early in the second quarter. As the conference slate continues to ramp up and teams start to figure out where Humphries likes to find his yardage, Stewart notes he’s talked to his quarterback about making the dangerous jump-ball throw and how it might not always work in a gametime situation. Humphries, however, is exuding confidence in Gandy to make the play. “Some of those throws we’re going to have to be a little bit careful making, because it’ll make it that much tougher on Gandy to make those type of plays,” Stewart said. “But KD’s answer was ‘If he keeps making them, I’m going to keep throwing it to him. “That’s a good point there.” At East Limestone High School, Gandy was a standout basketball player who played foot-

ball his senior season — tallying 49 catches for 860 yards and 10 scores. He also had 620 return yards and three more scores on special teams, and MSU wide receivers coach Casey Brockman said it was the basketball in him that’s helping create the big play. “He can jump and go get it, and that makes it tough to gameplan against us in the red zone,” Brockman added. “Do you put one guy on him? Two guys on him? And that may open up some other things down the road.” Brockman also noted that Gandy is the “biggest surprise” coming into this season, mainly because of the lack of opportunity for him in the past. In 2014 he had 99 receiving yards, and last season he accounted for just one touchdown and 36 yards. His game against Austin Peay this past weekend accounted for more yards than his first two seasons combined. “We didn’t really know what to expect from him coming into this year just for the fact that he hasn’t ever really done it in a game,” Brockman said. “Obviously we didn’t get him the ball much in the Illinois game, because you don’t know if they’re practice players or game players or what are they. “But man, that guy has made a ton of big catches and big plays … and

he has emerged to as our go-to guy down there in the red zone with him and Blackburn.”

Dodson out for season After four carries and 16 yards against Illinois, former Ole Miss and Memphis running back Mark Dodson will be out for the rest of the season due to pending surgery on a Lisfranc issue in his left foot. Stewart confirmed the news on Monday morning, and noted he will be actively researching a possible medical redshirt for his junior running back. Dodson has already used his academic redshirt previous to transferring to Murray State. “We have decided that Mark Dodson will have surgery, and that’s kind of a season-ending deal,” Stewart said. “We had it as a six-week deal. We were going to leave him as trying to see how that thing went. But we got a second opinion from a doctor and they said that they would rather have surgery on it now. “From what I understand, it’s kind of a Lisfranc and more of a ligament deal in that (left) foot. You’re talking about a good amount of time to rehab — probably six to nine months on the back end – so we decided to go ahead and take that right now so we can get him back.”

STREAK CONTINUED FROM 1B

really well in the second half. “And I think one of the things that I’m surprised about is how tough our team is. We played a game on Friday where it’s the most fouls (44) I’ve ever been a part of. Even when I played, there was never 44 fouls. Part of that was bad refereeing, but it was a physical game. People

getting kicked and people putting their bodies on the line.” The Racers’ conference tests don’t get easier, either. A scheduled power outage has moved Friday’s home game against Tennessee Tech (6-4-2, 2-01) to 3 p.m. Wednesday on Cutchin Field, and on Sunday it’s Murray State playing host to Eastern Kentucky (8-2, 3-0) for a 2 p.m. start.

Added Groves: “We have two of the better teams in our conference coming to town this weekend, and it should be a good weekend.”

Steigerwald back in Former McCracken County goalkeeper and Racer freshman KK Telfair had started in a double-overtime loss at Saint Louis and a 3-2 win over Morehead

State and picked up 14 saves before a chipped ankle last week reopened the keeper position for Groves. With the competition rekindled, incumbent keeper Alex Steigerwald got the job back and has been “fantastic” according to Groves, this after saving 11 shots against SEMO and nine shots against UT Martin. “When we found out that

(Telfair’s injury) happened early last week, I told the goalkeepers that this week was kind of like a trial,” Groves said. “Whoever did the best was going to play. Alex won the spot, and she’s been fantastic ever since. She’s like the Alex of last year, so we’re happy to have her back. Some of the goals that I think we conceded (over the weekend) were a couple of bombs.”

Coach Mike Mularkey said he just didn’t see improvement out of special teams before deciding to fire an assistant who worked for him in Buffalo in 2004-05. Mularkey spoke with Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk on Sunday night and says he isn’t worried about his own job security. He also insists the Titans are better. “We’re very close. I know people are tired of hearing that, I’m tired of saying it. But it’s a fact,” Mularkey said. “There’s a few plays that have made a difference in the outcome of these games. I know in the past two years if we had been down 14 points in Houston, that would not have been a pretty outcome. And this team is competing with every team that we’ve played and had a chance to win every game we played. We’ve got to find a way to win.” The Titans came into this season expecting a turnaround behind a new

general manager with Mularkey fully in charge, having been given the job permanently in January along with 23 new players on the roster. Now a month into the season, they are on the same track that wound up costing Ken Whisenhunt his coaching job after a 1-6 start. Linebacker Derrick Morgan sees a difference in this team from previous squads, especially in how the Titans responded when falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter in Houston. “In years past, we more than likely would’ve folded in that situation,” he said. “But I think we did a great job battling back and tying it up and actually making it a four-quarter game. ... We still lost the game, but you can kind of see incremental improvements in the team.” The Titans have had the ball late in each of the last two losses with a chance to either force overtime or go for a 2-point conversion and the win. But they’ve put themselves in catchup mode with too many mistakes.

Cubs? Kershaw? Big Papi? Plenty of playoff questions pop up BY BEN WALKER Associated Press

After a scramble to finish the regular season, the playoffs are finally on deck. With 10 teams left, here are 10 questions to carry fans through October:

Can The Cubs Do It? Joe Maddon’s crew romped to 103 wins, and now the North Side of Chicago is set up for either the biggest party of all time or the most brutal disappointment ever. Nothing in between for Wrigleyville, really. The pressure won’t rattle Jon Lester and John Lackey — they’ve pitched in these spots. Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and the young hitters must handle hopes and expectations that have been building since the Cubs’ last World Series championship in 1908.

Will Kershaw Come Up Aces? Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw is all set to pitch Game 1 at Washington. He’s certainly got the pedigree: Cy Young Awards, ERA titles, 20win seasons and an MVP. What he doesn’t have is a winning record in the playoffs — 2-6. And in his last six starts in the postseason over the past three years, he’s 1-5 with a 5.45 ERA, plus a high walk and home run rate. Remember, Hall of Famers Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine had losing career marks in the postseason. But Kershaw could use a couple of wins to round out an otherwise glittering resume.

One More Big Swing For Big Papi? David Ortiz had a dream season in his final year — huge numbers, an MVP candidate, a worstto-first turnaround by the Red Sox. His likeness has been cut into the grass at

Associated Press

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon watches from the dugout in the second inning of Sunday’s game against the Reds in Cincinnati. Fenway Park, his legacy is etched into history. What the retiring 40-year-old DH really wants is one more ring — he’s won three with Boston and owns a career .455 batting average and .576 onbase percentage in the World Series. He begins these playoffs against former manager Terry Francona and Cleveland.

Will Madbum Stand Tall? When last seen in the postseason, Madison Bumgarner posted a Giant save to win Game 7 in Kansas City. The 6-foot-5 lefty will try to save San Francisco’s season on Wednesday night in the NL wild-card game, on the road vs. the Mets. In 2014, he pitched a shutout at Pittsburgh to win the wild-card game. If he gets to the World Series, watch out — no one can match his 4-0 mark with one save and an 0.25 ERA.

Who’s Hurtin’? Stephen Strasburg, Carlos Carrasco and Jacob deGrom are among the injured aces as the playoffs begin. Wilson Ramos, Neil Walker and Michael Brantley are out, too. A few others have been banged up, with Daniel Murphy, Eduardo Nunez and Danny Sala-

zar among them. It’s easy to wonder what a team would’ve done with a full roster; this late in the year, as managers often say, it’s not worth worrying about.

What About The Trade-Offs? In late July 2015, the Royals acquired Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist, and the pair helped them win the crown. A lot of big names moved to contenders this year in midseason — Carlos Beltran and Jonathan Lucroy to Texas, Matt Moore (Giants), Aroldis Chapman (Cubs), Andrew Miller (Indians), Mark Melancon (Nationals) and Jay Bruce (Mets). We’ll soon see which trade-deadline guys deliver.

Toronto, and lingering ill will led to him getting punched this season by Texas’ Rougned Odor. Just imagine if they meet again this month. Brawls are rare in the playoffs, but they happen — the Blue Jays, as we got to see, don’t take no guff.

Anyone Get Skipped? Quite a collection of managers in these playoffs. Some have won the World Series (Bruce Bochy, Francona, John Farrell), others have gotten close (Dusty Baker, Terry Collins). Some have been in the playoffs before (Buck Showalter, Joe Maddon, John Gibbons, Jeff Banister), while Dave Roberts (Dodgers) made it in his first year.

Who’s New?

Starter Or Reliever?

Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo led the majors with 47 home runs and powered into his first postseason. Red Sox outfielders Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. also get to play for the first time on the big stage. Productive newcomers Trea Turner, Nomar Mazara and T.J. Rivera will join them this week.

Many of the mostscrutinized decisions this month will involve how managers handle their pitching staffs. Use a starter like Cole Hamels on short rest, or maybe in emergency relief? Push a closer like Kenley Jansen for four outs, or five or six? Four-man rotation or three? With a lot of teams trying to advance farther than they’ve been in years — the Cubs, Indians, Texas and Washington — get ready to ramp up the second-guessing.

Lacker’s outlook

Eye on Darden

Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond president Jeffrey Lacker discusses the U.S.’s economic outlook at a conference sponsored by West Virginia University’s college of business and economics. The U.S. economy will be a key focus in markets this week. A raft of economic data culminates with the monthly jobs report in the U.S. on Friday, a release that could go a long way to determining whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again this year.

I’m sure most folks in Sidney are pretty nervous this morning,” Schilz said. Bass Pro founder and CEO Johnny Morris said he hopes to continue growing the Cabela’s brand alongside his privately-held chain.

Halloween safety tips

A Sweet Treat

• Trick-or-treat before it gets really dark. Carry a flashlight to help you see curbs and uneven ground. • Don’t eat your treats until you get home. Have an adult check your treats before you eat them. • Stay in your own neighborhood. • Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes. • Go trick-or-treating with a group. Be sure there are adults in the group, or with you if you are trick-or-treating alone. • Do not wear a mask. Wear face makeup so you can see better. • Visit only houses that are welllighted. • Your costume should be a good fit. Don’t wear one that is too baggy. Wear a bright color so you can be seen by drivers. • If you’re invited inside, say, “No, thank you,” and do not step inside. • Cross the street only at corners; don’t run out between parked cars.

Mini Fact: Every year, more than 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold!

© Monkey Business Images | Dreamstime.com

Are you looking forward to Halloween? Is candy corn at the top of your list of favorite Halloween candies? Candy corn has become a symbol of Halloween, but it’s now made in other colors for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. The Mini Page takes a look back at the history of one of our favorite holiday sweets.

At first, candy corn was linked with autumn because of the corn harvest. In the 1950s, the candy became a favorite for trick-or-treaters.

Making the corn In the early days, candy corn was made by hand. Sugar, corn syrup, marshmallows and other ingredients were heated into a slurry, or semi-liquid mixture, then poured into molds. Today, candy corn is made by machines. After the kernels cool in the molds, they are polished in large drums with a wax and glaze you can eat. Then they’re packaged and sent out to stores.

More than a century old In the 1880s, a worker at the Wunderlee Candy Co. in Philadelphia came up with the idea for a candy that looked like corn kernels. A few years later, the Goelitz Confectionary Co. took over production of the candy and called it Chicken Feed. In the 19th century, candy-makers made candies in all kinds of shapes, including chestnuts, turnips and clover leaves. Candy corn kernels fit right in!

Resources

Too much sugar? If eating straight candy corn seems too sugary for you, try mixing it with other snacks. For example, for a candy corn trail mix, combine 1 cup of candy corn with 1 cup each of peanuts, raisins, almonds and dried cranberries. To make more of a snack mix, add Chex or Cheerios cereal, pretzels, Goldfish crackers and chocolate candies such as M&Ms.

Eco Note A mysterious purple orb, or globe, discovered 5,000 feet down in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California may be a new species of sea slug. A team from the Ocean Exploration Trust made the discovery in August in the deep Arguello Canyon. A sample from the discovery, which was said to look like a tiny purple disco ball, was sent to the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology for DNA analysis.

You’ll need: • 12 large (3-inch) chocolate cookies • 1 (12-ounce) container chocolate frosting

• 12 red licorice twists (cherry- or strawberry-flavored) • 12 red-hot cinnamon candies

What to do: 1. Spread 2 1/2 to 3 tablespoons chocolate frosting on top of 6 cookies. 2. Carefully cut red licorice twists in half lengthwise to make 24 skinny “spider legs.” 3. Next, slice the 24 twists crossways in half to shorten the legs (you’ll have 48). 4. Arrange 8 spider legs on each of the six chocolate frosted cookies (4 on each side). 5. Place another cookie on top, forming a black spider with red legs. 6. In the top edge of the cookie sandwich, tuck in 2 red-hot cinnamon candies to serve as eyes. Makes 6 servings.

Robin Williams’ widow Should opposites attract? Dear Annie details his final days Associated Press

Robin Williams’ widow says the actor had “chemical warfare in his brain” before his death. Williams suffered from dementia caused by Lewy body disease and took his own life in August 2014. Susan Schneider Williams writes in the medical journal, “Neurology ,” that her husband’s suicide came “at the end of an intense, confusing, and relatively swift persecution” from the disease. Schneider Williams says Williams had trouble remembering lines during the filming of “Night of the Museum 3” in the spring of 2014 and says the “loss of memory and inability to control his anxiety was devastating to him.”

Robin Williams and his wife, Susan Schneider Williams, arrive at the 2012 Comedy Awards in New York. Schneider wrote an essay, published in the medical journal “Neurology” on Sept. 27, that said Williams had “chemical warfare in his brain” before his death. Williams was diagnosed with Lewy body disease after his death. Schneider Williams says she’s sharing her experi-

ence in the hope doctors will be “inspired to turn Robin’s suffering into something meaningful.”

Lohan says she lost part of finger in boat accident Associated Press

Lindsay Lohan says she had surgery to reattach part of her finger after a boating accident. The actress posted a video of her hand with a bandaged ring finger Sunday on Snapchat. She says on the video, “This is the result of me trying to anchor the boat by myself,” adding, “My poor finger!” Lohan explained in a caption on

the video that she lost half her finger during the accident. She says the detached piece was found and she had surgery “to fix it.” The 30-year-old later poked fun at herself on Instagram, posting a picture with the caption, “One handed selfie.” Lohan didn’t say where or when the accident happened, but Turkish media report

it took place in the southwestern resort town of Bodrum. Private news channel NTV reports that friends recovered the finger and Lohan was rushed to a hospital for surgery. Lohan was in Istanbul late last month to visit a hospital for Syrian refugees and the home of a refugee family from Aleppo.

Dear Annie: I am a soon-to-be divorced man who has suffered a great deal of pain after the collapse of my lengthy marriage. After enduring the dissolution of multiple post-separation relationships, I found what in many ways is the perfect woman. As we have gotten to know each other, however, we have found huge ideological gulfs between us. My significant other does not vote. She does not believe in vaccination. Her disapproval of the gay lifestyle extends to having animosity toward gay individuals. She believes they flaunt a deviance that they have chosen. She believes in conspiracy theories, putting stock in the theory that the Pentagon was damaged by a missile in 2001, that there was no plane that flew into it. Her positions rankle me. Do you believe that a relationship between individuals who are opposites in many respects can survive and thrive? — Night and Day Dear Night: There are the sorts of pairs that are complementary “opposites,” who together find balance and more meaning through each other, e.g., yin and yang, night and day, peanut butter and jelly. But your pairing sounds more like Pop Rocks and soda — explosive and causing much bellyaching. My question for you is: Why the rush into dating? I sug-

gest you put that on hold until your divorce is finalized. Once you’ve turned the last page in that painful chapter of your life, you can attempt to start fresh. You are used to being in a relationship and may compulsively be seeking a woman to fill that role. Don’t be in such a rush to partner up that you settle for someone and find yourself wanting to excuse away major issues. Dear Annie: I’m a 14-year-old boy from New Jersey. I just started high school and am involved in clubs and on the junior varsity football team. I’m not a straight-A student, but I make pretty good grades, mostly B’s and some A’s. My parents got divorced when I was really little; I barely remember it. Both of them have since remarried. I live with my mom and stepdad most of the time (spending some weekends with my dad). I have an elder brother, who is 17, and a little brother, who is 4. My elder brother has had all sorts of problems since he was about 12 or 13. He has anger issues and shows our parents no respect, even cursing them out sometimes. He has slacked off in school and done things like faking signatures on failing tests he was supposed to take home to show our

mom. I know there have been plenty of other incidents that my family has tried to keep secret from me to protect me. Last year, they sent him to a program on a ranch for three months. It was kind of like a school/camp/rehab for troubled teens. He was responsible for taking care of animals there, and it seemed to help him a lot. But less than a month after he got back, he started going back to his old bad ways again. My parents are always so busy dealing with my brother’s issues that I feel as if they barely even notice me. I sometimes feel as if I’m being punished for being the good kid. What can I do to make them take more notice of me? — Middle Child Dear Middle: It’s not easy being golden. You’re a great blessing in your parents’ lives, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they know it, but they’re focusing their attention on the ongoing crises with your elder brother. Tell them how you feel. It might not exactly be fair that you have to remind them you need attention, too, but it’s fortunate for your family to have someone as mature and patient as you on the team.
