PTO News

Dear Arcade Community, I have found myself reflecting recently on what it means to be a school community. It is a belief of many that schools are simply places where students are sorted and selected to determine who will be ahead of whom in the race for the highest grade point average. I think the more important purpose of a school community is to help students learn to take responsibility for themselves and their community. Taking responsibility requires being skillful and knowing how to make good judgments. It requires listening to others and trying to fit in, but also knowing when not to fit in.

Hi Arcade families, We have kicked off the new year with a bang... Our Winter formal brought Arcade kids together, beautifully dressed and enjoying themselves socially. Events like these help our students build friendships and trust which positively translates onto our wonderful campus and contributes to the quality of education they receive. Thank you to all of our parents who volunteered to help with chaperoning the dance and helping at the snack bar, these areas led by Dina Dennis and Jane Smith. This month, we have a few events supported by our PTO. On Friday, February 6, our students are invited to Glow Bowl at Country Club bowling on Watt Avenue after school. Thank you to Kim Hartranft for leading & organizing our parent volunteers for this event. Watch for permission slips going home with your student. Our English department is sponsoring an Assembly this month, welcoming Sacramento’s B Street Theater on February 10. Arcade English teachers are awesome!

Taking responsibility in one’s community can be a struggle for students and it is very rewarding to see how much growth our students have shown over the course of the year. I am more encouraged every time I witness a student make the tough choice to do what is right, rather than what is popular with peers. I am thankful that we have such a great staff and parent community to help our children learn what it means to take responsibility for themselves and their community! Have a great February! Student Government News

February is here, and like always, Student Government is very busy coordinating events for the students. We will be having a Glow Bowl on February 6. Come and join us at Country Club Lanes for an afternoon of pizza, food, and fun! Also, Valentine’s Day is approaching, and we will be selling carnations for the students to send to their friends. Carnations will be sold during lunch and delivered on February 13. Lastly, on February 23, we will be starting the Pennies for Patients charity collection, which benefits kids fighting leukemia. We hope to see you at Glow Bowl, and participating in school fundraisers and events. Claire Rouse

Infinity History

Community Service was assigned in mid-January and it is due the week of May 18. As an incentive and to support the “Jeans for Teens” campaign that is currently going on at Arcade, I will give 1 hour of Community Service for each pair of jeans turned in and if they turn in five pair of jeans the will not have to complete the summary piece for Community Service. In History for February we will be looking at how the early U.S. dealt with foreign affairs. February is a short month and we have the week of Feb. 16 off as well. Progress Reports will be going home on Feb. 10. Rick Barnes Arcade Middle School InfinitiyTeam History Student Government Advisor [email protected]

Academic Talent Search The Academic Talent Search (ATS) Qualifying Exam will be offered at Arcade Middle School on February 3, 2015 at 8:45 am. Students who take this test automatically qualify for the ATS Summer Program at Sacramento State. There is no obligation to apply; taking the test simply gives students the opportunity to attend unique, fun, and interactive courses. ATS is a non-profit program that offers 4th-9th grade students (grade level as of Jan. 1, 2015) exciting classes designed to accelerate learning in subject areas they enjoy. Fourth and fifth graders attend classes together and have the chance to expand their knowledge of interesting topics and meet new friends who share their enthusiasm for learning! Current 6th-9th graders can challenge themselves in traditional and non-traditional subjects, and gain self-confidence and independence while experiencing a collegiate environment. The first step toward participating in ATS is to take the Qualifying Exam. No test preparation is required since there is no pass or fail! For more information, please contact Donna Pool at dpool@sanjuan. edu. Additional program details, including a brief video, financial aid information (over $45,000 in financial support was granted in 2014), and sample test questions, can be found on the ATS website at www. csus.edu/coe/ats.
