“Best wishes” “Best wishes” is the most popular greeting on the Christmas cards we are likely to receive this year. It would be so easy to write that automatically, without thinking about it. What would be the best wish I could have for someone? Would it be that they could enjoy brilliant health? Or that they could win the lottery jackpot? Or that they have a happy life? In other words, a wish for ‘health, wealth and the pursuit of happiness’. I notice that a recent national initiative to measure happiness went the way of so many other ’initiatives’ from the same source! When I stop to reflect on the people who have had the greatest impact upon me, and who have been the greatest blessing, I am struck that not many of them have been wealthy, some of them have definitely not enjoyed good health and many of them have had to cope with tragedies in their own lives or of those close to them. Yet what is common to all these people is that they have been fully alive, that there has been a real genuineness and openness about them, a real generosity of spirit: the sort of people who make you feel better when you’ve been with them. St. Irenaeus, a 2nd century bishop, wrote that God is glorified when someone is truly alive. Perhaps my best wish this season and indeed all year for someone is that they be fully alive! VILLAGE HALL THANKS Thank you to everyone who helped, supported and enjoyed the recent Italian Evening and Safari Supper – both events in aid of Village Hall funds.

YOGA A few ladies in the village are interested in getting together a Yoga class in the New Year, in the Village Hall. It would be on a Wednesday morning for an hour and would be a six-week course initially. The cost of hiring the hall means that we need a minimum number of people. So, if anyone is interested please email me and once we have sufficient numbers we can go ahead and organise something. There is no commitment at this stage but if we get this up and running, the six-week course and contribution for the hall hire will need to be paid up front. The cost will be £25 per person for the 6 week course – maybe slightly more depending on hall hire costs. About the yoga – this will be a tone and relax yoga class, it is designed for all levels of ability. The yoga practice will involve exercises on the floor, sitting and standing postures together with breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques. Please email [email protected], or phone 01858 575513

GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND INTO THE PUB I decided tonight that I really wanted a night free from cooking, so on the off chance we went to The White Hart, something we do far too rarely. We had an extremely good meal at a very reasonable price! Beautifully cooked by Pete we had 2 very good steaks (Morris's of course!) with chips, peas or salad, all for the amazing price of £20 which included a very good Cabernet Sauvignon. Come on folks let's keep our Pub going! Forget being chained to the kitchen stove once a week and let The White Hart take the strain! Mary Guppy

SCHOOL NEWS We have had an exciting month at South Kilworth C of E Primary School. We were delighted that Dean Barnett an Olympic torch bearer came to take assembly and that we were all allowed to hold the torch. The year 5 and 6 children have enjoyed taking part in enrichment activities at Lutterworth High School, a science lesson, a French breakfast and a cookery session. The Reception children together with Years 1 and 2 enjoyed a visit to Leicester Botanical Gardens. Year 5 and 6 have been to Chedworth Roman Villa and found out more about the Romans, their current topic. Year3/4 are looking forward to their visit to The Space Centre. Some very peculiar things have been going on in their classroom we thought you might like to read a couple of their letters.

Dear Dr Who, I am writing to tell you that we have your Tardis in our class. I'm not sure that you knew it was missing but, mysteriously, last week, it appeared in our classroom. All week it has been moving about. Over the next few days the Tardis started to make weird buzzing, humming and fizzing noises. And if that doesn't sound weird enough a DALEK came out of it and made everybody scream. Then the dalek started to speak! It was speaking in a robot voice. I hope you can come and collect your Tardis and destroy the dalek. I love your super screwdriver. I wish I could have one, where do you buy them? I wish I could be your companion for the next adventure because it sounds really fun. If you have any spare time please could you reply? Yours sincerely Rupert Moule

Dear Dr Who, On Thursday 11th October your tardis, mysteriously, teleported by itself to the centre of our classroom and has been suspiciously moving around our classroom. A few days later the tardis was making very weird noises. Then we were going to go in it, Miss Warwick checked it one more time and screamed...10 seconds later Miss Warwick brought out a baby Dalek. I knew it was a baby because it was bronze. The Dalek always kept tittering "exterminate" and "yes" and "must have orders." It was always moving but it's strangely stopped moving now. I think it is very rude because it keeps on talking over Miss Warwick. Can you pick up your tardis as soon as possible, but not the Dalek because it's actually quite adorable? I really like it how in your programmes you always save the world and save all those people from becoming aliens. Oh and one more thing where do you get those sonic screwdrivers because I really want one. Can you reply to my letter as soon as you can? Yours sincerely, Matthew Jacks

SWINFORD WINDFARM COMMUNITY FUND UPDATE There have been no more meetings with parishioners or Messrs Vattenfall since the last update The parishes involved have been concentrating on mainly procedural matters in the intervening time. We have sent off the parishes application to register as a Community Interest Company (CIC) twice !!. The first attempt came back from Companies House with some minor queries and so the amendments have been made and the application sent off again. Hopefully this will be sorted in the very near future now. We have sent over the parishes draft legal comments to Messrs Vattenfall on the “Grant Funding Agreement” – this is the legal agreement between the CIC and Messrs Vattenfall. This is the next big hurdle, as once this document is agreed and signed and a Company formed we can hopefully get hold of some cash. As mentioned in previous updates, the Parish Council are holding fire on establishing the sub group until the details around the funding are finalised. Watch this space !! Ernie Roberts

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS October The reservoir has produced a few interesting sightings in October including a Mediterranean and yellow legged gull in the roost on the 13th. There was also a firecrest and Cetti's warbler - both caught and ringed by the Stanford Ringing Group during the month. November Stanford Reservoir came up trumps again on "bonfire weekend" when a black throated diver was seen briefly on the Saturday. I ventured down in heavy rain the following morning and eventually re-found the bird feeding very close to the Leicestershire bank. Having returned home and dried out, I revisited the reservoir later in the day and despite still relatively poor light I managed to get a couple of pictures (see www.stanfordrg.org.uk or www.northantsbirds.com).

Black Throated Diver

This is the first record for Stanford Reservoir and a great addition to the list. Interestingly, at a county level there are less than 50 records for Leicestershire (60% of these records have come from Rutland Water). This also represents the 19th record for Northamptonshire (and the first for 11 years) making this bird quite a rarity in both of these “land locked” counties.

In the garden the feeders have been active with the usual great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and various tits and finches. The first signs of winter have also started to show themselves in the form of fieldfares and redwings. Don’t forget to keep your bird table and feeders well topped up – the birds are depending on you. An early influx of waxwings has started across the country so keep an eye out around the village and your garden! There has been a record from Stanford Reservoir in the last few days so you never know. Chris Hubbard
