Parent Advisory Committee As we enter into December and cold weather, we also near the time to say “Good bye” to two of our treasured staff members. Come Winter Break, as we all know, Debbie Labossière will retire and our fierce leader, Marc Poirier will move into his role as the new Principal of École Sage Creek School. Mme Labossière has been with our school for a number of years and has touched our hearts with her kindness, time and dedication. She has gone above and beyond in so many ways for so many years. Congratulations and we wish you all the best as you kick up your feet and enjoy vacations and many relaxing hours with your family! M. Poirier … How do we say good-bye to you? Our Principal has been more than our leader. Marc has been so much more to our children, school, community and of course us parents. Our massive loss is Sage Creek’s gain. News from the Classroom Mme Mandaliti - Kindergarten What bright and colourful days we have had over the past 11 weeks during our in-depth study of colours. What better than to celebrate with a Rainbow Party. We have also enjoyed our study of Families. We realize that although our families are very different, they are all very special in their own way. Thank you to parents for providing us with a family picture to add to our Families bulletin board. It is nice to get to know our new school community. This family unit led into our unit of the 3 Bears. The students have enjoyed doing fun activities with their furry little friends. Well, let’s hope the snow is on its way….to lead us into our first fieldtrip, a visit to the Village du Père Noël (Santa’s Village) at the French Cultural Centre. Details to follow shortly. This will be a nice trip to incorporate into our Celebrations around the World theme where we will learn about: Christmas, Dwali, Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Ramadan and Chinese New Year. If you or any other family members have anything to share (traditions, costumes, food, talents, etc.) regarding one of these holidays or any others, please contact us as we would love to have you come in and speak to the class.

Mme Male - Kindergarten November was a great month, filled with lots of fun activities. In social studies, we began the study of families. We have done many activities by looking at our families, including math graphs and counting. As a class, we looked at how each family is different, unique and special in their own way. Thank you for the wonderful family pictures which were brought into class; the students have really enjoyed looking at all the pictures on our bulletin board! This month, we have been working on many different activities with a bear theme. In math, we were able to do some counting and graphing with all the teddy bears brought into class. We also practiced new French words based on this theme, including petit, moyen et grand. In Art, we are making teddy bears that resemble our own bears from home; wow, are they ever looking cute! In science, we are finishing up our study of colours and will be having our Rainbow celebration soon. I can’t believe we have already gone through our 11 weeks of colours! Next month, we will begin our winter theme and our study of different celebrations around the world.

Mme Côté - Grade 1 During the month of November, the Grade 1 class has been busy learning new French vocabulary related to our Apple theme. Students enjoyed learning the names of various apples, tasting different apples, graphing their favourite apples, as well as estimating and measuring the height and weight of their apples by using unifix cubes. At the end of our unit, students will have the opportunity to make and eat an apple crisp that we prepare together as a class! In Math, we are beginning to count by 2, 5, and 10 to 100. We are also working on patterns (les régularités) such as continuing a known pattern and representing patterns by using shapes, colours and various movements. Now that the holiday season is quickly approaching, we will be learning new French vocabulary related to Christmas and Winter. The Grade 1’s will be very busy this month with many activities such as: making crafts, writing a collective story, singing songs, preparing for the Winter concert and creating their own gingerbread houses. It will be lots of fun!! Happy Holidays! Joyeuses Fêtes!

News from the Classroom Mme Julie - Grade 1 Throughout the month of November, the grade ones have been making strides in all aspects of school. Every day, the students continue to add words to their vocabulary bank. They are taking risks and are speaking French with teachers and peers alike! Bravo! We have also started our French literacy groups. The students have been very motivated when working in small groups with a teacher where we have been working on reading and writing syllables (a consonant and a vowel fused together), sight words, initial sounds and other pre-reading and writing skills. The students are eager to work in our literacy work stations and enjoy having the choice of choosing a game that suits their abilities. In math, we continue to develop our number sense by working with many manipulatives and different games on the Mimio. During art education, the students learned about the artist Gustav Klimt and made an art project depicting his famous artwork of The Tree of Life. We also have been studying warm and cool colors. The highlight of the month was having the parents come join us in the presentation of our play of La petite poule rousse. We worked hard at learning our lines and getting into character. The students were so very proud. They did a fantastic job!

Mme Annick - Grade 1 During the month of November, the students have been studying apples. We learned the different parts of an apple (le pommier, la pomme, la tige, la feuille, la peau, le coeur et les graines) while using them to help us count. In Math, we’ve been practicing to count by 2s up to 30 and by 5s and 10s up to 100. We’ve also been creating and continuing different patterns. In social studies, we’re working on our unit on relationships with others and are learning about our rights, responsibilities and what makes us all unique. The kids are beginning to speak more and more in French and are even able to explain what a word means in French, without using the English translation! Bravo les amis! Continuez le beau travail!

Mme Hudon - Grade 2 It’s hard to believe the month of November has already come to an end. We’ve started working on our addition skills and are about to learn how to count money. We are continuing to grow as readers and are making great progress! Science has been very exciting as we’ve been busy learning about mammals, insects, reptiles and birds! One of our favourite things to do is watch videos posted by the Winnipeg Police Service. We’ve been watching last year’s K-9 puppies grow. We started the unit off with some great “I wonder” questions: Claire: Why are there some birds that can’t fly? Xavier: Why do elephants have large ears? Yolanda: Why don’t snakes have eyelids? Elizabeth: Why do lions have a mane? Cole: Why do turtles have short legs? Bridgit: What’s the scientific name for animals that walk on four legs? We are going to be very busy the month of December as we start a research project on a Canadian animal, create winter art and continue to develop as writers. Keep warm!!!

Mme Lauren - Grade 2 During the month of November, the students of Grade 2 have been working extra hard in class and at home. They have continued to improve their French and English reading by participating in reading groups. We have been practicing strategies such as using clues from the letters, the surrounding words and the pictures to make sense of unfamiliar words. In science, the Grade 2s have enjoyed asking questions about animals and sorting them into various groups. We also found similarities and differences of animal life cycles. The students have also had a chance to act out conflict resolution in social studies classes. We drew from everyday conflicts that are experienced at home and at school to find non-violent solutions. What creative ideas the students have! In art, the Grade 2 students learned about abstract art through cubism. It was fun to create surreal cubist birds! The students were great at thinking outside the box to create their works of art. What a fun-filled and busy month November has been. Bon travail, les amis!

News from the Classroom Mme Bérard - Grade 3 November just seemed to have flown by, jam packed with fun‐filled activities, evaluations as well as special invited guests. Our reading program has taken off in both languages. In French, we have combined the students of Mme Mangin’s and Mme Bérard’s classes for the reading groups. The students are busy practicing their fluency, sound and word recognition as well as applying various reading strategies as they take part in their guided reading groups scheduled on Days 2, 4 and 6 of the school cycle. Be on the look out for new books on these particular days! On Tuesday, November 3rd, Constable Rochon made a great presentation on “Online Safety” to the students of Grades 3 and 6. He showed different video clips to clearly demonstrate the importance of protecting ourselves and our personal information when using the Internet. On Monday, November 9th, Fire Fighter Dave made a wonderful presentation on Fire Safety, reviewing key elements to PREVENT a fire. He clearly explained the different steps to follow if anyone would ever be caught or stuck in a fire, whether it be at home or in a public building. Be sure to ask your child all the friendly reminders they have learned throughout the presentation. We also enjoyed taking part in the creation of our school video project which focused on the characteristics of good citizenship. The students wrote the word “Respect” using their bodies to shape the different letters. Wow! Some are truly flexible! In Mathematics, they have worked on creating as many different 3-digit numbers as possible, given three different digits and placing these numbers in ascending and descending order. The students have also worked on extending numerical patterns and naming its rule. They are also working on giving the value of a specific digit within a number, as they continue working on place value. In Language Arts, we are continuing our Novel study of James and the Giant Peach, as we look forward to its theatrical presentation at Manitoba Theatre for Young People scheduled at the beginning of December. It will be interesting to compare the book with the presentation, as all the characters come to life!

Mme Kateri - Grade 3 Fall is officially here and winter is not far behind! Thank you to all the parents who sent in food and drinks for our Halloween party. We had a great time playing games together. What a fun time! It’s hard to believe that November is already over! This month, we had our Remembrance Day assembly. Each class in the school prepared a 20 second video. Our class had to represent how we respect ourselves and each other. We did a brainstorm of words that we use in French to respect each other. For example: merci, bonjour, au revoir etc. Everyone was placed with a partner and had to pick a word from our list. They created a poster with their word and had to come up with a sentence. Then M. Poirier came and filmed all the class saying their words. The class loved it! You can see the final product on Marie-Anne Gaboury’s website. It is a great example of citizenship!

Mme Mangin - Grade 3 Bonjour! Once again, students have been hard at work! Here are a few November highlights that they wanted to share with you. I liked when we invented and built our own plants in Science! It was super-duper fun! – Cole I liked that we started Bravo Bingo. A class game to remind us to work hard and we get little rewards! – Madison It was fun working on our James and the Giant Peach art project. I liked the part when we took pictures of ourselves and made it look like we were James. – Dayna I really liked working on our Jour du Souvenir booklet. I enjoyed writing a letter to a soldier. – Addison In sciences de la nature, I liked learning different actions to show the 6 parts of a plant. – Autumn I enjoyed learning the song Braves Soldats. – Tanner In English, I liked writing about what peace means to me. - Edie I enjoyed singing French songs with Mme Bérard’s class. – Natalie It’s been fun watching the students work on addition problems with regrouping! They’ve also been having fun playing math games to practice their addition facts.

News from the Classroom Mme Carrière - Grade 4 The students showed their creative writing skills by composing very heartwarming Peace poems. They also represented their poems by creating a peace sign filled with Zentangle symbols and patterns. In Science, the students created a musical instrument out of recycled materials. Their final products were very creative and fun to listen to! In French, we have been learning how to review and edit written texts. In Math, we are working on our unit of how to tell Time. In Social Studies, the students have been learning about the Canadian provinces and territories through various learning centers.

Mme Légaré/Mme Scheelar - Grade 4 In French, students continued their reading groups 2 or 3 times a week, making predictions, summarizing the story, studying new vocabulary and practicing reading with expression. This month is writing, students are having fun creating a superhero. In Math, students learned about telling time. Occasionally, please ask your child to tell the time. Does he/she understand the 24-hour analog clock? In Health, we learned about our brain, our thoughts and our emotions. We intentionally stopped ourselves to be aware of how we feel and we discussed and practiced strategies to regulate and calm ourselves. In Art, we studied the plasticine artwork of Barbara Reid and created our own work of art with this year’s class picture. Beautiful! Grade 4 students are practicing to be active citizens! Both classes are getting ready for the grade 4’s annual rummage sale!!! In English, students have just completed their peace poem and peace art. We will be beginning paragraph writing shortly. Students are learning about the geography of Canada in Social Studies. In Science, we will be continuing our unit on sound and learning about our ears and how they work. Students are very much looking forward to the Bric à Brac sale in support of Habitat for Humanity. We would like to wish everyone a beautiful winter holiday

Mme Stechesen - Grade 5 In the Grade 5 class this month, one of our main activities has been a writing project in which the students expressed what «home» means to them. By exploring and discussing the differences between «house» and «home», the students came up with some thoughtful reflections such as, «To me, having a home is a good life. It means a warm bed, good food, water, safety and a comforting place to go after a long day», and, «Coming home to your family, having a nice, cozy bed to sleep in and a quiet place to read and study, are some of the things we take for granted». Our 25 entries to the national Habitat for Humanity/Genworth Canada «Meaning of Home» writing contest resulted in a donation of $5 per student, or $125 to Habitat for Humanity, by Genworth Canada. In time for Remembrance Day, we’ve also been learning about the factors that caused World War I and Canadians’ contributions to the war effort. We have some real war buffs in the class who have contributed lots of input and facts to the discussion! As well, in light of what they are learning and in considering the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the Grade 5’s have begun to reflect on what needs to happen for peace to last. Soon the students will begin a research project to create a class WWI timeline. Continuez vos beaux efforts, les 5e!

MAG News

News from the Classroom Mme Cloutier - Grade 5 /6 December is upon us and we are working full speed ahead in all our programs. The students in the grade 5/6 class are also working hard at developing their citizenship skills throughout the school. You should be proud to see how they have embraced various responsibilities such as patrols, student secretaries, lunch monitors, helping with the blue box recycling program, not to mention their commitment to our Partnership with Winnipeg Harvest. The education coordinators from Winnipeg Harvest came to our school in order to work with the students on a simulation activity called “Living on Less” during which we examined how difficult balancing budgets can be for a low income family. It was an eye opener for us all and we are now even more committed to help this worthy cause. Students learned that for every dollar donated to Winnipeg Harvest, they receive twenty dollars of donated food. This fact has touched my students who, along with their generous parents, are planning a Bake Sale on December 3rd. We are hoping to raise lots of money, (along with food donations collected) which we will present to Winnipeg Harvest on our December 10th visit. With all that is going on with this great learning experience with Winnipeg Harvest, we have not neglected our programs. In Math, we are further developing long multiplication and division as well as patterns and relations. Stemming from our participation in the Remembrance Day ceremony held at school, we are now learning about the causes and events of World War I. In English, we are working on expository essays and in French, we have begun our “Super orateur” program which will see the students prepare (every 3-4 weeks) oral presentations covering a vast selection of topics. We have also had our second visit with Baby Zachary who comes to our class once a month for our Roots of Empathy program. We are anxious to work and play with him as we continue to observe his growth and development throughout the next year. All this and more during the next month! I am enjoying learning and working alongside your children!

M. Lachance - Grade 6 This month, the students participated in a school wide video project for Remembrance Day where each class received a theme word and had the task of representing it. We received the word Diversity and after reading great texts, watching powerful videos, and having discussions on the topic, students planned out an art piece in the style of illustrator/ artist Karen Barbour. Keeping in mind sustainable development, each student received a recycled piece of curved cardboard cut to different sizes and taken from the packaging of a piece of furniture. They used this 'canvas' with paint and ink to create their art piece. All these art pieces were mounted on 2 recycled broom sticks and a PVC pipe and mounted on a tree stump piece. The students also each filmed their art piece explaining both in French and English the meaning of their work of art. These videos were then linked to QR codes located next to the art piece. These could then be scanned with a QR reader on any device and the videos could then be watched. The students were very creative in this interactive art piece.

M. Acorn - Grade 7 Mathé 7 and 8: Students have been working on a variety of concepts such as operations using decimal numbers, converting fractions, decimal numbers and percentages from one form to another and calculating the percentage of a number. ELA 7 and 8: Students have been working on a number of projects. First, they have been creating a “Today’s Green Minute” video on an environmental issue. Secondly, they have been working on a piece of representing that demonstrates a theme from one of the novels they have read this year. Finally, they have been working on their year-long Genius Hour projects.

Mme Taylor - Grade 7 / 8 We have been very busy with many exciting projects this month! Here is a list of what students have been working on: Sciences Humaines 7-7/8-8 : Students have finished studying the elements of geography and are now completing a research project about primary and secondary sources. They chose a primary source from WW1 and are completing research about it. English 7/8 : Students are studying the novel The Uglies and are beginning to work on a major project that has them creating their own civilization. Français 7 : Students have been working on completing various activities based upon different readings in order to develop their critical thinking and discussion abilities.

Mme Daumler - Grade 8 The grades 7 and 8 students are currently exploring how energy cycles through our ecosystems. We have also completed a lab session on photosynthesis in which students had the opportunity to observe and confirm the necessity of light in the photosynthesis equation. In French, students are currently creating iMovie trailers for a legend they learned in class. They are also working toward learning how to differentiate and apply different narrative perspectives in their written products.

M. Bohemier/M. Levesque/Mme Male - Physical Education In physical education, we’re happy when we’re active! We love to see students arrive running in and ready to move. Students have been challenged during the warm up activities to work on their core strength by doing planks and wall sit exercises amongst other things. Do you think you can go longer than your child? Challenge them to see how strong their core is and repeat monthly to see their improvement. As part of our activities in November for the Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, we have been doing rock, paper scissor activities, parachute games and skipping rope as part of our jump rope for heart program. Students in grades 4 to 8 had a fitness unit, a soccer unit and a handball unit. Volleyball season is now over and Basketball season will be starting shortly. Congratulations to all the players and coaches for a great volleyball season. A big thank you to our coaches for dedicating so much of their time to ensure our student athletes have the opportunity to play. Follow this link for a great letter one mother sent to her son’s soccer coach. http:// changingthegameproject.com/a-letter-to-my-sons-coach/

Mme Wiebe - Band Welcome to a glimpse into the life in the band room. The grade seven and eight band classes are in the midst of preparation for our Winter Concert. The grade eight Jazz Band is up and running and has made great progress on our first piece of the year. The students are also experimenting with basic jazz improvisation ideas. The grade 6 and 7 choir is excited to be working on a recording for a competition hosted by CBC. These ensembles are looking forward to sharing their music with you. Please mark your calendar for our concert in the evening of January 19 th at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain. More details to come. It will be a fantastic celebration of the hard work the students have put into playing their instrument and learning their pieces, and we would be honoured to share it with you. It is a joy and privilege to make music with your children. I will leave you with a quote by Leonard Bernstein (1963) that continues to inspire me these days, “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” Wishing you joy, peace, and music.

Mme Berger - Music The Grade 5 and 6 choir performed in Flanders Field for our Remembrance Day assembly which was held on November 9 th. All class choirs have begun working on their pieces for the Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 15 th.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone and building great memories through reading activities, school activities and PAC’s fun adventures. You will all be in my heart as I start a new adventure in my Golden Years! LOL! Happy Reading! - Mme Debbie Labossière

Mme Meyer, Mme Labossière, Mme Vick, Mme Popkey—Student Services The countdown is on! Three more weeks of school before a very well-deserved vacation for students and staff! Sadly, as I am sure that everyone knows, we are losing a very special member of our Student Services Team at the end of the month. Mme Debbie Labossière will be retiring and moving on to a new chapter in her life, a world that may involve a bit of travelling to warmer climates during our harsh winters. We want to wish her well and thank her for everything that she has done for our team, our students and our staff over the years. Her gift of compassion, kindness and her love of life have been appreciated by all who know her. Mme Labossière, know that you will be missed! In her absence, Mme Linda Rivard has accepted a position with Student Services, starting on January 4th. She comes to École Marie-Anne-Gaboury with a great deal of experience and expertise and is a welcome addition to our team. With her arrival will come a few changes to our roles within the school. In the New Year, our team members will be responsible for the following classes:  Mme Sheila Vick will be working with all Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 3 classes.  Mme Margo Popkey will continue to do small group instruction, focusing on all aspects of literacy learning with Grade 2 students. United Way I am so proud to announce that the students of École Marie-AnneGaboury raised $1,469.00 during our annual Piggy Bank Spirit week. It was fun to see the students and staff participate in the various themes throughout the week. I would also like to thank the staff for their continued support and generous contributions in addition to the funds raised by families during the spirit week. We were also able to donate many items including: winter jackets, ski pants, tuques and boots. Families are encouraged to bring any further donations of winter items directly to any WFPS Fire Hall or Perth’s location. It is estimated that 1/3 of all Winnipeggers will at some time in their life, seek out the services of United Way. A huge thank you to all for supporting such a worthwhile community cause.

News from the Lunch Lady ATTN PARENTS! You are the food crusader for your family! Here are some ideas to consider as the New School Year starts to help you fulfil your mission. Don’t worry – We are NOT suggesting that you make fruit kabobs, cheese daisies or use cookie cutters to create sandwiches that look like dinosaurs. We know you are busy and looking for practical solutions and advice. Keep it Cold! [and Safe] – A frozen 100% juice container used as an insulator will be like a “slushie” by lunchtime and a yogurt tube, frozen overnight, will be “just right”. Follow the Canada Food Guide – It is not new, but it still works! Whole grains, fruits, veggies, and protein are the must-haves. Everything else is like icing. Don’t serve more icing than cake! Control the weekly consumption of Goodies – YOU Rule the Cupboard! Decide in advance how many goodies you are buying for the week, whether for school or home. If the kids eat them all before the week is finished, resist the temptation to run to the store to buy more. Think beyond the Sandwich – Fill small containers with crackers, cheese, veggies, fruit, muffins, cold meat, pizza or whatever to create an instant “Bento Box”. A thermos can carry leftovers, soup or even hot chocolate. Anything goes! Serve more Carrots and Apples – It’s harvest time. We would all be healthier if we ate more carrots and apples and less of everything else. Try to think about the next day’s Lunch the night before. Mornings are such a rush! Get the lunches started the night before and get the kids to help out. Why not ask them to suggest a healthy lunch for you. This sends the message that healthy choices matter in your home.

Reminder to all parents When picking up your children from school, if you are parking on Weaver Bay, please respect the ‘no stopping’ signs and residents’ driveways. Thank you for your cooperation.
