In just 18 months’ time, fire protection, disaster relief, rescue, safety and security professionals from around the world will once again converge on Hannover, Germany. Emergency services and emergency-service technology providers from over 50 nations will be represented at the next INTERSCHUTZ fair, which runs from 8 to 13 June 2015. INTERSCHUTZ is where suppliers of emergency services technology unveil their latest innovations, and industry associations, organizations, service and training providers present and debate different approaches and solutions to modern-day emergencies. Preparations for the 2015 event are in full swing. Dr. Jochen Köckler, the responsible member of Deutsche Messe’s Managing Board, says that even at this very early stage, the company is noticing strong exhibitor interest across all four of the fair’s main display categories (fire protection, disaster relief, rescue, safety/security). “The high level of exhibitor interest from outside Germany is particularly pleasing to see. A good 50 percent of the

projected 1,200 exhibitor turnout will come from beyond Germany.” But the show’s success is not just the result of its strong international appeal. Köckler: “Exhibitors value INTERSCHUTZ for the high percentage of senior decision makers among the visitors it attracts. More than two thirds of the fair’s visitors have key input into their organizations’ capital investment decision making.” One of the big INTERSCHUTZ 2015 attractions will be the supporting CRI!SE conference and exhibition, which will focus on the protection of critical civilian infrastructure. Other highlights include the St John Ambulance Emergency Services Symposium, the presentation of the St John Ambulance Hans-Dietrich-Escher Award and the Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) competition. INTERSCHUTZ 2015 will be organized with the support of the German Fire Protection Association (GFPA), the German Fire Service Association (DFV) and the Firefighting Technology Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA).

Four main display areas INTERSCHUTZ 2015 display categories – expanded scope of safety & security exhibits INTERSCHUTZ has evolved well beyond its initial fire-services focus to encompass the full range of emergency response themes, with Fire Protection, Disaster Relief, Rescue and Safety/Security featuring as the four main display areas in 2015. Especially the traditional rescue sector has been greatly enhanced, including rescue vehicles, ambulances, first aid and medical equipment. According to a survey conducted at the last INTERSCHUTZ show in 2010, roughly 33,000 visitors were interested in the Rescue showcase. The show’s Safety/Security exhibits, in particular, have shown consistent growth. In broad terms, this display area is all about integrated safety and security solutions and crisis management systems. Specific display categories in this area include personal protective equipment, measuring and detection apparatus, security systems, control-center and signaling technology, control and surveillance equipment, mechanical security systems, individual devices for electronic security systems, information technology and organization methods, industry associations and organizations, and service providers. The organizers of INTERSCHUTZ have implemented a program to attract new exhibitor target groups from the security surveillance, intrusion detection, evacuation, secure communications, perimeter protection, video surveillance and access control sectors.

This, in turn, will attract new visitor groups, namely managers and senior executives from private security firms, government, the police and defense sectors. The expanded technology and information offering will also appeal to security managers in charge of critical infrastructures. Vehicles and vehicle equipment, fire extinguishing technology and agents, equipment for fire stations and workshops, structural engineering, technical fire and building protection and fire protection associations, organizations and service companies – these are the individual display categories that make up the Fire Protection display area at INTERSCHUTZ 2015. The display area will feature a big lineup of exhibitors from Germany and around the world who will be demonstrating their latest equipment and solutions – from technical fire protection systems to airport fire trucks. The recent spate of serious earthquakes and extreme weather events have shown once more how enormously varied in nature and scope the challenges that confront the world’s disaster relief organizations can be. And the requisite technical and logistical measures are just as diverse. Companies which operate in this broad field, whether they manufacture rugged water purification equipment or innovative disaster relief software, will have a unique opportunity to showcase their solutions in the Disaster Relief display area at INTERSCHUTZ 2015.

Experts regard INTERSCHUTZ as key platform for fresh ideas and new technologies The most effective emergency responses involve a closely coordinated approach across all the different parties involved, from fire services, ambulances and

disaster relief organizations through to security services. Whether dealing with everyday emergencies or the protection of critical infrastructures, a coordinated

Ambulance services – more than just patient transport Dr. Jörg Schmidt, Cologne Fire Brigade, Chairman of the Ambulance Services Working Group within the AGBF Bund

“Modern-day ambulance services do much more than transport emergency patients to the nearest hospital. The spectrum of emergency events they become involved in is wide and varied – ranging from individual life-threatening emergencies and large-scale accidents to terrorist attacks and panic-prone crowds. That’s why it’s is absolutely vital that the ambulance

services work hand in hand with other types of emergency responders, such as disaster relief, fire protection, safety and security services. I am confident that the rising importance of having a coordinated approach will be one of the key themes right across the many exhibits, individual meetings, forum presentations and panel discussions at INTERSCHUTZ 2015. Far from operating in a vacuum, ambulance services are an integral part of the public safety and security apparatus. This view was also borne out by a recent report, the ‘Potsdamer Thesenpapier,’ by the German Association of Professional Fire Brigades (AGBF Bund).”

Leading trade fair, creativity hub and ideas incubator “For fire services around the world, INTERSCHUTZ is the number one tradeshow for discovering the latest innovations, sharing knowledge and gearing up for future challenges. It showcases the innovative power of the fire protection industry – an industry that engages with its users and finds solutions to their problems. The German Fire Service Association is very happy to be associated with INTERSCHUTZ. It is the leading exhibition for fire protection, disaster relief, rescue, safety and security solutions and it brings together fire service representatives from around the globe.” Dr. Bernd Scherer, Managing Director of the Firefighting Technology Association within the VDMA

Coordinated approach increasingly important

“INTERSCHUTZ is an outstanding platform for getting innovative, premium-quality, German-made firefighting hardware in front of an international audience. It is no accident that the fair is based in Germany. The country is the single biggest market in Europe and, most importantly, its fire services demand very high standards of the equipment they buy and use. Not least for these reasons, INTERSCHUTZ is an absolute must for fire-service procurement managers from Germany, the rest of Europe and around the globe.”

Albrecht Broemme, President of the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) Provinzialstrasse 93, 53127 Bonn

“The flooding we saw across wide swathes of Germany in spring 2013 demonstrated once more how important it is to have robust, efficient disaster response systems in place. Networking, knowledge sharing and cooperation among the various organizations involved is the key to ensuring a successful and effective response effort, especially

where large-scale disasters are concerned. And that’s where the INTERSCHUTZ fair really comes into its own. Apart from being one of the world’s leading trade fairs in its field, it is also a hugely important creativity hub and ideas incubator. It is a place where experience and expertise are shared and discussed, valuable contacts are made and new technologies, the latest research findings and developments are presented to an interdisciplinary audience. In 2015, there will again be no shortage of opportunities to present and debate the latest solutions and developments in our industry.“

Building technology alone can´t prevent fires Peter Krapp, CEO, German Security Association and Working Group of Building Constructors and Planners within the German ZVEI

“The rate of development of building fire protection systems is getting faster and faster; however, there is also a growing realization that building fire protection is not solely a matter of individual building technologies and materials. It is best served by a combination of measures. New technologies and smart protection concepts have given rise to building fire protection systems

that address different risks in a more targeted and detailed fashion. These systems tend to be more cost effective, without, however, compromising the mandated level of protection. INTERSCHUTZ 2015, with its expanded scope of exhibits and target groups, will reflect this trend well. Key factors in the success and effectiveness of today’s building fire protection systems are the perfect mix of complementary structural, organizational and building technology measures on the one hand, and the acceptance and promotion of this mix of measures by the fire services.”

effort always delivers better results. INTERSCHUTZ 2015 will be the world’s premier showcase for new products, ideas and solutions for the emergency services.

Networking is the name of the game Christoph Unger President of the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance

“Since its establishment in 2004, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) has served as the central interface connecting all German organizations involved in assuring the safety of the German population. Apart from the relevant local and state government authorities, we also work closely with the various non-governmental emergency and disaster response entities, such as the ASB, DLRG, DRK, St John and MHD, as well as key associations, such as the German Fire Service Association (DFV). Companies, too, are important partners for us, especially those that operate critical infrastructures. We have also become increasingly active internationally and today cooperate with a number of different countries on a range of civil protection projects. As one of the world’s leading trade fairs for the various fields of technology associated with civil protection, INTERSCHUTZ is not only a great place to showcase and view the latest products but also a great place to network and forge new contacts. Additionally, the inclusion of the CRI!SE conference in the INTERSCHUTZ lineup in 2015 represents a valuable opportunity to expose a wide professional audience to the all-important issue of critical infrastructure protection. My organization, the BKK, will use the next INTERSCHUTZ fair in Hannover to present some of the latest developments in the fields of public-emergency alert and information systems, civil-protection building projects and structures, critical infrastructure protection and civil protection equipment. My staff and I look forward to making lots of valuable new contacts and to holding interesting discussions with our German and international peers at the 2015 event. After all, networking is what it’s all about.”

Display stand rental

A friendly and green city awaits INTERSCHUTZ guests Welcome to Hannover, the vibrant, green capital city of the state of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany! Home to a major trade fair of international renown, large corporations and world-class research institutions, Hannover is a veritable city of innovation. But it’s not all science and business. Thanks to its location in the heart of Europe – right at the crossroads between north and south, east and west – the city also boasts an extensive cultural and leisure offering.

Hannover’s Old Town Hall

Hannover welcomes large numbers of visitors and tourists all year round, but the local hospitality machine really kicks into overdrive when the city hosts major trade fairs. That’s when the locals pitch in by renting out spare rooms in their houses and apartments. They love to meet people from other places, plus it’s a great way to earn a bit of extra money. Of course, a major city like Hannover also has all bases covered in the hotel accommodation sector, offering everything from the glitz and style of five-star hotels to the home comfort of

trip up to the lookout at the top of the dome (don’t worry, there’s an elevator!). On a clear day you can see as far as the Harz mountains. There are also plenty of other sights and attractions close by. One of them is Lake Maschsee, a popular spot for water sports, and, with six kilometers of shoreline, also a delightful setting for walking, cycling, jogging and inline skating. Hannover also has a massive green lung – the Eilenriede forest. It is Europe’s biggest inner-city forest and twice as large as New York’s Central park. Then there’s the Old Town Hall. Located within easy walking distance from the New Town Hall, the Old Town Hall – like the Market Church (Marktkirche) next to it – is one of Germany’s northernmost examples of Brick Gothic architecture. Another tourist hotspot in the historic city center is the Leibniz House, an exact replica of the war- damaged original. As the name suggests,

Historic city center

this was the home of the mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. One of Hannover’s best-loved attractions is the Great Garden at the Herrenhausen Palace, which is just a short car or tram trip away from the exhibition grounds. Visitors to Hannover’s inner city can also follow the “red route” – a 4.2 km red line painted on the sidewalk – to 36 of the city’s big attractions. A printed guide to the route in ten languages can be purchased for € 3 from the Tourist Information Center.

guesthouses. But it pays to book early to get the kind of accommodation you want. Hannover has loads to see and do when the day’s work is done and it’s time to relax and check out the local scene. The New Town Hall is an excellent case in point. With its magnificent Wilhelm II-era architecture, it looks more like a palace than a town hall and is a major inner city landmark. Once you’re there, it’s definitely worth taking a

As you might expect, Hannover also has an extensive restaurant and café offering to suit every taste – everything from fine dining to simple, hearty, home-style fare like the famous Knipp (or Calenberger Pfannenschlag, as it’s known locally). Hannover even has its own “national drink”. Known affectionately as Lüttje Lage, it is a top-fermented dark beer, which one drinks simultaneously with a shot of Korn liquor. Not for the faint hearted!

Strength and fitness win out World champs of Toughest Firefighter Alive It’s one of the most popular items on the INTERSCHUTZ supporting program: the Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) competition. The INTERSCHUTZ round of TFA has traditionally been a European Championship round, but in 2015 it will feature as part of the World Championships. The preparations for the event have been ongoing for quite some time, and chief organizer Claudia Consoir-Taube has been receiving registrations from all over Europe and beyond.

ment. The world’s best firefighters will be demonstrating the strength, coordination and fitness they rely on in their day-to-day work.” The 2015 competition will for the first time also include team relays. As usual, the World Championships will be preceded by the European Championships, which will be held in June 2014 in Mönchengladbach. The 2014 season will be the 16th European Championship event in the TFA series. Registrations are now open for currently serving front-line firefighters who would like to be part of the TFA competition at INTERSCHUTZ. Tel.: +49 2166-340774 or e-mail [email protected]

“In 2015, visitors can expect another topnotch event,” Ms. Consoir-Taube promises. “As always, it’ll be an exciting mix of headto-head competition, sports and entertain-

New official accommodation service Advanced reservations are recommended Hannover is a good host with plenty of accommodation on offer, ranging from B&Bs to five-star hotels, so you’re sure to find something to suit your taste and your budget. But trade fairs create huge demand, so it pays to book early. We therefore recommend that you book your accommodation for INTERSCHUTZ 2015 now. We recommend that you use the new accommodation service offered by Deutsche Messe’s approved provider, Hannover Marketing & Tourismus GmbH. The service is free of charge and is the best way to find B&B and hotel accommodation in and around Hannover. If you’re looking for hotel accommodation, keep an eye out for the

Awe-struck exhibitors and visitors from around the globe – Massive media interest thousand spell-bound visitors followed the action-packed program put on by Deutsche Messe in partnership with the German Fire Protection Association (GFPA) and the Leipzig Fire Department. The show also attracted its share of VIP guests, most notably the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and Germany’s then Minister for the Interior, Thomas Maizière. Mr. Maizière spoke of the important role played by volunteers in Germany’s emergency services, particularly its fire services.

Lest incidents become major disasters At INTERSCHUTZ 2015, safeguarding critical infrastructure will be top of the agenda at the CRI!SE (Critical Infrastructure Event) conference. The focus will be on the protection of critical civilian infrastructure, such as electricity, water-supply and data networks, in the event of disasters. CRI!SE is intended as a communication platform for government and private-sector civil defense experts and will provide excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in areas such as detailed disaster-response planning and effective prevention through education and awareness-raising. The Deutsche Messe-organized CRI!SE format was extremely well received when it premiered in May this year at the German Fire Protection Association (GFPA) Annual Symposium in Weimar. There, more than 110 experts from the non-police publicsafety sector explored a range of key issues, including how to prevent a local incident from escalating into a widespread disaster. The next CRI!SE conference will be held in conjunction with the GFPA Annual Symposium in June 2014 in Dortmund.

You have to be supremely fit to be in with a chance at the title.

Leipzig – what a show!

The CRI!SE conference is aimed primarily at senior managers and decision makers from fire-prevention, disaster-relief, rescue, military and government backgrounds as well as private civil-security service providers, representatives of cities and municipalities, and business leaders with responsibility for protecting critical infrastructure. Critical infrastructures are organi zations and facilities of great importance to the state, the failure or impairment of which would result in serious supply shortages, considerable disruption of public safety, or other dramatic consequences (definition from Germany’s Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK)).

INTERSCHUTZ 2010 was flanked by a major highlight on the exhibition grounds and in downtown Leipzig in the form of the 28th German Firefighting Convention. Held every

A total success: a look at INTERSCHUTZ 2010 in Leipzig

INTERSCHUTZ 2010 in Leipzig featured more than 1,350 exhibitors from 46 countries and attracted 125,000 visitors. And they all hailed it as a truly fantastic show. The accolades center primarily around the high quality of the show’s strong trade visitor turnout and the resulting positive impact on in-show sales talks. 50 percent of the trade visitors had firm capital investment intentions. No less impressively, INTERSCHUTZ 2010 succeeded in increasing the foreign share of its total visitor count to a solid 23

percent. The show’s international diversity was also up, with a total of 53 nations represented among the visitor turnout as compared with 49 last times the show was held, in 2005. Guest of honour: Chancellor Angela Merkel

The Leipzig season of INTERSHUTZ was a veritable feast of innovation, especially in terms of firefighting equipment, solutions for the rescue services, and personal protective equipment. Outside, on the open-air and demonstration sites, ten

ten years, the convention is always a grand occasion. Together, the two events generated massive media interest, with German dailies, radio and TV stations and online media providing extensive coverage.

INTERSCHUTZ is an international brand

Poland – highly promising market for fire protection and rescue systems Having enjoyed consistently strong economic growth in recent years, Poland has embarked on a comprehensive program of modernization of its fire and rescue services. This well-funded program is making Poland one of the world’s most promising markets for suppliers of fire protection and rescue systems. It is certainly generating a great deal of interest in the EDURA trade fair for firefighting and rescue services technology, which is held annually in Kielce, a major city located around 100 kilometers northeast of Krakow. Under a joint venture between Deutsche Messe and EDURA’s operator, this year’s EDURA featured a new, jointly organized international section known as “EDURA powered by INTERSCHUTZ.” The new

section was a big success and will feature again at the 10th EDURA fair, which runs from 12 to 14 June 2014. Poland’s modernization program is driving strong demand for high-quality products. The “EDURA powered by INTERSCHUTZ” showcase is therefore the ideal platform for companies wanting to get a foothold in the fast-growing markets of Eastern Europe.

Successful cooperation with R.E.A.S. in Italy As well as exhibiting at “EDURA powered by INTERSCHUTZ” in Poland, INTERSCHUTZ exhibitors can now run showcases at “R.E.A.S. powered by INTERSCHUTZ” in the northern Italian town of Montichiari (near Lake Garda). R.E.A.S. is a well-established trade fair, having

been held in Montichiari every year since 2000. It is now an integral platform for the rescue, fire-protection and disaster-relief sectors and is Italy’s largest and most important solutions showcase for the emergency services, first aid, civil defense, safety and security. Joint venture negotiations between the organizers, Centro Fiera de Montichiari and Hannover Fairs International, were brought to a successful conclusion in early 2013, and the inaugural “R.E.A.S. powered by INTERSCHUTZ” show followed soon after in October. By pooling their expertise, the two organizers intend to grow the show even further, starting with the next “R.E.A.S. powered by INTERSCHUTZ”, which runs from 10 to 12 October 2014.
