This unit standard applies to all persons who will need to supervise the operation of a shooting range or shooting exercises for business or sport purposes. This supervision must ultimately lead to the safe use of a shooting range as a primary objective of this unit standard. This unit standard applies to normal operation and does not include the requirements for the supervision of tactical exercises and range inspection. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to: ● Demonstrate knowledge of standards and legislation required for the safe operation of a shooting range. ● Prepare participants and environment for a shooting activity. ● Carry out activities applicable to the conclusion of a shooting event. ● Be able to supervise the operation of a shooting range. LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Communication at NQF Level 2. It is further assumed that the learner supervising a shooting range in respect of this unit standard has successfully completed the unit standard that they wish to supervise i.e. if the learner is to supervise 119649 then they must have completed 119649. ●

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 Demonstrate knowledge of standards and legislation required for the safe operation of a shooting range. OUTCOME RANGE ● ● ● ● ● ●

Civil liability. South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). Occupational Health and Safety. Safe handling rules. Range safety rules. Administrative procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 The concept of civil liability is described in respect of an accident or incident on a shooting range. ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 SABS requirements are described with reference to the type of range that will be used. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE The "type" of range will be indoor or outdoor and may have specific restrictions in respect of activities or calibres allowed on the range.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 The Occupational Health and Safety Act is described within the context of shooting ranges. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Description must include: flags, warning boards, instruction boards, safety equipment e.g. location of the first aid kit. Personal protection equipment (PPE), e.g. ear and eye protection and designated safety areas.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 Safe firearm handling rules are explained in relation to the discipline or event. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Discipline means, but is not limited to the type of firearm and exercises being employed. Event refers to the specific type of shoot or sport being performed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 Range rules are explained in relation to the discipline or event. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Range rules must include, but is not limited to: The range commands and safety equipment. The requirements of the environment being used in respect of the shooting range surface and sight of target in relation to the height of the backstop wall.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 Administrative procedures relating to the safe operation of the range are explained in respect of registration, recording of results, scoring and attendance. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Administration procedures refers to the procedures applicable to the particular sport association, club or other accredited body.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 Prepare participants and environment for a shooting activity. OUTCOME RANGE Prepare must include the preparation of the following: ● Designated official. ● Environment. ● Equipment. ● Conditions. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Responsibilities and authority of the designated official are explained in respect of the particular sport or discipline. ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 Conditions that would make the shooting range environment safe or unsafe are explained in the context of the condition of the range. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Condition refers to the condition of the: ● Surface. ● Backstop wall. ● Weather. ● Light conditions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 Range equipment is inspected to ensure it is fit for purpose. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Range equipment must include, but is not limited to: Warning flags and boards, first aid kit and information boards.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 Safety inspection of a participant`s equipment is carried out in order to ensure it is safe, functional and fit for purpose. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Participant`s equipment must include, but is not limited to eye and ear protection, holster and footwear.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 Contingency plan or procedure is described within the context of an accident or injury occurring during a shooting event. SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 Carry out activities applicable to the conclusion of a shooting event. OUTCOME RANGE Activities refer to ● Incident Report. ● Equipment Storage. ● Range Maintenance. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 The procedure for the reporting of incidents is described in relation to the reporting structures. Procedures refer to: ● Complaints. ● Accidents. ● Infringements. ● Use of the first aid kit. ● Damage, which may have occurred. Reporting structures refer to: ● Authorities. ● Committees.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 The procedure for the storage of range equipment is explained with examples. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Range equipment includes but is not limited to: ● Target frames. ● Targets. ● Eye and ear protection. ● First aid kit. ● Time keeping equipment. ● Flags. ● Markers. ● Any other equipment that requires secure storage.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 Range maintenance is described in respect of the type of range being utilised. ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE Range maintenance should include: ● Procedures for cleaning up. ● Dispatch of any hazardous materials. ● Maintenance of backstop walls and range surfaces. ● Maintenance of water and toilet facilities.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS ● An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. ● Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. ● Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. ● Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
