Scope

Abstract Covers a method for testing engines designed for road vehicles. It is applicable to the evaluation of their performances with a view, in particular, to presenting curves of power, torque and specific fuel consumption at full load as a function of engine speed.

Keywords compression-ignition engines, engines, exhaust gases, fuel consumption, internal combustion engines, motor vehicles, performance testing, pollutant gases, power (mechanics), power measurement, spark-ignition engines, torque.

Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee StanSA SC 5120.27A, Steering committee for construction of motor vehicles – Category M1 and N1 vehicles, in accordance with procedures of Standards South Africa, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This edition cancels and replaces edition 3 (SABS 013-1:1988). SANS 10013 consists of the following parts under the general title The determination of performance (at net power) of internal combustion engines: Part 1: Road vehicle internal combustion engines at sea level. Part 2: Compression ignition engines at altitude. Part 3: Agricultural vehicle internal combustion engines at sea level. Annexes A, B, C, E and F form an integral part of this part of SANS 10013. Annex D is for information only.

The determination of performance (at net power) of internal combustion engines Part 1: Road vehicle internal combustion engines at sea level

1 Scope 1.1 This part of SANS 10013 covers a method for testing engines designed for road vehicles. It is applicable to the evaluation of their performances with a view, in particular, to presenting curves of power, torque and specific fuel consumption at full load as a function of engine speed.

1.2 It does not apply to internal-combustion engines used for propulsion of motorcycles and agricultural tractors, or free piston engines.

2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of SANS 10013. All standards are subject to revision and, since any reference to a standard is deemed to be a reference to the latest edition of that standard, parties to agreements based on this part of SANS 10013 are encouraged to take steps to ensure the use of the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Information on currently valid national and international standards can be obtained from Standards South Africa.
