historical significance as a department store.

No other department store from this era can today combine this elegance and luxury. At that time Goerlitz was a park and pensionary town for the gentry; its fine society could now experience a department store atmosphere as could normally only be found in the big cities of Europe. The building was designed by the Potsdam architect Carl Schmann (1863 – 1957) and constructed by one of the most renowned builders, August Kaempffer (1872–1959) from Goerlitz. A ready-made-clothing hall, an oriental hall, a refreshments room and an office – presented in 7,100 square metres of space were textiles, leather goods, household items of every sort, lamps, jewelry, writing materials, books and gramophones.

In October 2015 the department store will be open to the public again in the full glory of its earlier years. Some of the shop space will go to firms from Goerlitz and Upper Lusatia as well as to national and international manu facturers and retailers. A quarter will remain in our hands so that we can retain an influence on the goods: setting styles, suitably supplementing the assortment, stocking prestigious brands, and raising the level if necessary. You are warmly invited to participate in this beacon project and to contribute to the upswing in the old and new commercial hub of Goerlitz.

Marketing Department Store Goerlitz – the Shopping Experience The planning and development of the Kaufhaus Goerlitz is a project that is followed, supported and eagerly awaited by the town and the inhabitants of the region. An active marketing and publicity campaign will track the development and customer loyalty of the Kaufhaus Goerlitz from the building phase on. The goal is, in addition to generating high customer satisfaction and frequency, to make the store known in the complete catchment area and further afield. The European town of Goerlitz, the region of Upper Lusatia and the interesting position at the border triangle have a lot of potential – and with its attractiveness the department store will outdo the competition. The department store management will ensure that the development is of high quality, the product assortment is attractive and the unrivalled atmosphere remains unique. Different target groups will be addressed with various events, show cooking, courses linked to the range of products, exclusive toilets, and exhibitions and presen tations from the colourful world of fashion. The project is focused not only on German customers, but also on successfully addressing the Polish and Czech markets.

Unique event location: from the Dresden Orchestra to a filming location for the opening film of the Berlinale 2014 “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, the department store will host outstanding performances – soon also culinary events

The Project Plan ... to Allow the Department Store Jewel to Shine Again The 100year-old building of the Kaufhaus Goerlitz is being completely restored and renovated. After removal of all fi xtures and old building appliances, the timeconsuming reconstruction of the original optical state has started: supplemented with the most up-to-date building and thermal engineering. The windows to the outside, the insulation of the facades, the new lifts, the high ceilings and the elegant flooring will be constructed to a high quality according to modern practices but staying true to the original. As many design elements as possible from the original department store should be brought to life again. In addition to the renovation and vitalisation, there are further extension options. Sufficient parking is provided by a multi-storey car park and parking places nearby. The opening of the department store and the start of shopping is planned for October 2015.
