The Rival Hotel is a wholly owned subsidiary to Benny Andersson Produktion AB.

Cultural and Architectural Values The building is of great historical value as it was one of the first establishments where a variety of entertainments and leisure activities were mixed. The hotel, restaurant with a café, patisserie and cinema were integrated into the building as was the car mechanic shop in the basement. Plans existed to convert the cinema to a theatre with a revolving stage, which had already been prepared underneath the stage floor. The Rival Theatre has great architectural values which can be seen in the spacious foyers divided into three levels, the wide staircases with elegant handrails, the depth and width of the stairs, the stage and the façade of the balcony. The uniqueness of the press chamber with its own entrance and the microphone lodge are of particular cinema historical value.

Renovations and Expansion 2002-2003 The most important criteria was to recreate the holistic essence enabling the activities of the building to dovetail in a natural manner and to allow free access between the cinema, the bistro and the hotel.

The façade facing Mariatorget has been kept and recreated in its original nuance of light plaster and carefully renovated wooden windows in the hotel and bistro. Each hotel room in the courtyard wing has French windows for more light.

Hotel rooms (99 rooms, 194 beds) The idea behind the interior design has been to create a colourful and multi-facetted environment, stretching from the festive original interior of the cocktail bar to more contemporary design. Everyone should feel most welcome here! The rooms have been planned with two main intentions; classical rather than trendy and comfortable rather than luxurious. An openness between the bathroom and room and with as large a window as possible, with a view from the bathroom. Warmth and care when it comes to the choice of materials used, with yellow-stained birch panelling in the entrance. Worked details with patterns and milled handles on cupboards. Wooden blinds in the same material in front of the bathroom windows. The inner wall of the bathroom is covered in glass mosaic of various colours. Marble on the floors. Pleasant lighting with light pillars with blasted glass on each side of a large mirror. Marble interior in bathtubs in all de luxe rooms and suites. Special details such as coloured knobs and towel racks. Lots of surprises! The beds are model Gullö from Lagans and have more than 1,000 jointly double-twined spirals. Bed linen made of Egypitan Cotton, duvet covers, pillow menu – in all 99 rooms. The cinema theme dominates the room with a movie motif on canvas or glass-covered positioned above the bed and surrounded by a generous velvet curtain. The motifs feature movies from SF dating back from 1924 onwards. The movie motifs are matched against various colour schemes, often in a strong colour. The large 32” TV plasma screen is built in a cupboard including DVD/CD-player and Playstation. Fixed and wireless broadband in all rooms.

Divan Metropolitan. Design Lievore Asocoados.

Bed Gullö from DUX/Lagans, bed linen from Gastaldis/Amotto and teddy bears from Debenhams. The Rival offers a special pillow menu!

The type of armchairs vary depending on the size of the room, but all are comfortable with special designs in material such as aluminium, leather and velvet. The oak floors have woollen carpets in varied colours. The rooms for handicapped persons are generous in size with large bathrooms fulfilling all standard requirements. A special design features a silvery mosaique wall and bench in Corian. The hotel rooms in the new wing are characterized by lacquer red panelling in the entrance and birch furniture. Sony Plasma screen 32”. KZ-32TS1. DVD/CD-player and CD discs in all rooms. At The Rival more than 150 DVD movies are available for hotel guests, free-of-charge.. Erotic movies are not included in The Rival’s movie collection.

The Bistro Robust feeling of southern Stockholm with dark oak floors and yellow-stained panelling. Colourful Persian nomad carpets in the inner part of the bistro. The wall panelling is made of a framework of 924 film star images along the long wall (see photo to the right) and the facing wall is covered with portraits of authors and artists who live in the area. Film star images design Carouschka Streiffert.

The Private Lounge A tight club environment in the narrow room with a slanting ceiling stretching between the façade and Mariatorget and the view of Maria Magdalena Church to the east. Several seating options with sofas and armchairs (Tondo armchairs, see photo to the right). Great comfort, small tables placed close to each other and naturally, a piano. In the hallway one meets a delightful wall featuring 50 or more musical scores, carefully mounted behind glass. A tight combination of nomad carpets in different colours cover large portions of the wooden floor. The lighting is both festive and intimate. Silk curtains and drapes in different colour schemes cover the whole area. In the suites these are augmented by organza in silver and gold. In 2007 Karin Ahlgren designed a dinner table which was produced by Claes Tarras, Helgalundens Snickerier. Eight classical Y-chairs designed by Hans J Wegner completed this set of furniture.

The Cocktail Bar The cocktail bar, photo lower right, with the foyers and the actual cinema, are the best kept parts of the hotel. The bar has been carefully adapted to contemporary requirements for serving capacity but has kept its shape. A semi-circular light- and glass chandelier is hung above the counter both to increase storage capacity but also to emphasize the central position of the bar. The adjoining sofas have been upholstered with red velvet.

In the cocktail bar there is possibly the world’s smallest dance floor!

Level 7 – suites The top floor is reflecting light but also a feeling of actually being in an attic; elegance over the rooftops! White washed floors and walls are the form. The bathrooms are light and luxurious with white carrarra marble and brass, a bubble bath and complete glass wall facing the room.

Carpet Monroe. Design Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg.

The beds are low and wide. White sheep skin acts as feet blankets. A few comfortable armchairs soft rugs of pale wool. One rug is deep pink with a scatter of glitter. The overall wood used in panels and cupboards etc is light coloured oak. All lamps are made of brass with white shades. The photo to the right shows suite 704.

Corridor Carpeting The corridor carpeting and film star images are designed by Carouschka Streiffert, interior designer (SIR), artist, set designer and exhibition architect. Carouschka has her own business since 1978 and also teaches at arts schools. Carouschka has designed the glass series ”Is i doran” for Pukeberg and she also designs carpets exclusively made for one customer. Carouschka has had c:a 50 separate exhibitions and c:a 50 combined exhibitions as an artist. The carpeting in the corridors has various functions. It absorbs the sounds caused by important communications flows in the building. The carpets also give you a hint of where you are, a sign of location. That is why every level has its distinct carpet design. Carouschka creates carpets in an unusual way. She uses a technique of collage i.e. tears, cuts ”urban paper waste” which she carefully pieces together in a balanced, yet lively pattern.

Exempel på mönster, korridormatta.

The carpets are hand-woven of 100% New Zealand wool. The wall lights (Kava) in the hotel corridor are mounted at a low level next to each hotel room, which reflects a light picture on the floor, showing the room number edged in the glass. (Annell Ljus+Form)

The Rival’s Logo and Profile ” To visualize The Rival Hotel was a challenge as there was so much to take in. I chose to display a vision in the form of a poster using typographical lettering in a colourful tivoli-style linking the building year 1937 with modern times. It gives a highly personal image, unlike any other hotel, but there again there is no other hotel to compete with The Rival and its unique contents. The image, which is featured in four colours and also in red and black, is applied on everything from letter heads to business cards. For The Rival Hotel’s logo I have chosen to feature the image in the form of a projected key hole.“ Maria Dahlgren is the art director and designer. Maria’s design can be seen worldwide through the chain of stores ”Ordning&Reda” which she helped to start in 1982. Maria’s strength is to develop company identities into strong brands as well as to visualise and inspire. Metagram Art AB Telephone +46 (0)8 651 21 91 E-mail [email protected]
